Bedside Sleeper Cot
A bedside sleeper cot (also known as bassinet) can be attached to the bed's side to ensure that your baby is close enough for feeding at night, but is safe in their own space to sleep. Our mothers love that they are easy to reach, and they can also pivot the sides and drop them to get closer.
Safety
The bedside sleeper lets parents supervise, comfort and feed their babies at night without worrying about the dangers of sharing a bed. This could lead to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The cots are in line with NHS guidelines for co-sleeping, and are recommended by childcare experts, such as Dr McKenna director of the Mother-Baby Behavioural Sleep Laboratory.
They also help encourage healthy attachment and breastfeeding by keeping babies close. This helps them to reach milestones in their development. Parents should look for bassinets which are easy to clean, safe to use, and are certified by a trusted organization like JPMA.
In 2023, ASTM updated their version of the standard F2906 that is voluntary for bedside sleepers in response to the newer products which convert from a baby bassinet to a bedside sleeping product by the side rails being lower adjacent to an adult bed. This allows some portions of the lower side to be elevated above the mattress and poses an increased risk of being entangled. The CPSC's direct rule incorporates this 2023 revision to the existing mandatory standard set under section 104 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) for products for toddlers and infants that have been used for longer than 180 days and is expected to reduce the chance of injuries.
Remember that a bassinet, or bedside sleeper, should not be used in conjunction with pillows or blankets. This can pose the risk of suffocation since many young babies cannot lift their heads high enough to keep them from soft objects. Additionally, a reclined position could cause the head to tilt forward, obstructing their airway. Always place your child on their back when using a bassinet, a crib or play yard. Use a fitted sheet that meets the federal requirements.
Convenience
A baby who is close to you throughout the night can help build a bond between newborns and parents. Bassinets for sleepers that are attached to the side of your bed and let you easily reach your little one for diaper changes in the middle of the night feedings, as well as comforting. We looked for models with mesh sides that were transparent and visible through, allowing you to keep an eye on your child without stepping up from the bed.
It's important that the bassinet you pick is tested as safe for babies by an independent testing organisation and that it meets all requirements of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). You should look for a broad base, a strong attachment mechanism and sturdy construction that will stop the bassinet from slipping over. A mattress that is breathable should be considered.
Look for a model with an option for manual rocking that is gentle on your baby and can help settle them to sleep. Some models also have a tilt option which can be beneficial for infants suffering from colic or reflux, but should only be used on the supervision of your doctor or health professional.
Some bassinets include mattresses, while others require you to purchase one separately. Purchase a mattress that is designed to be suitable for the bedside sleeper. Mattresses that are second-hand can be too soft, and could pose a SIDS risk. You'll also need to invest in an air-tight fitted sheet and muslin blanket for your baby. For ease of cleaning ensure that the lining of the fabric or foam mattress can be cleaned in the machine. A basket or shelf for storage is a useful feature for storing necessities such as nappies, clothes and muslins. There are also models with wheels for ease of movement around your house.
Support for breastfeeding
If you decide to nurse your infant at night sleeping in a cot beside your bed will help you get the most benefit from your feedings. By attaching to your bed, it allows you to easily reach across when baby wakes to feed. The cot's side can be lowered to create a shallow bassinet to ensure safe sleeping side-by-side. Some models can also tilt for reflux support.
The curving sides allow you to see and help lift your baby up to feed. They won't roll off the side. Some bedside cribs come with an automatic rocking feature which can calm your child and help them to go back to sleep faster after a feeding.
A soft fabric, as well as removable and machine-washable bedding are beneficial in keeping your baby clean. Some models have gentle rocking and vibration functions which can help soothe your baby into sleep. Breastfeeding mothers will also appreciate having lots of storage.
It is convenient for nursing mothers to share their bed with their babies. This helps them form an intimate bond while they sleep. newborn bedside cot has shown that infants who are breastfed and sleep together have much better outcomes than infants who are fed through bottles. It is important to be aware of the dangers and pitfalls of sharing a bed with a newborn and to select an appropriate mattress for your baby.
Some sleeping bags for babies have soft edges that could keep your baby in the bag. You must also be cautious to ensure that the bedside sleeping device slide backwards. This could cause an opening through which your baby can crawl or roll.
If you're worried about the safety of your mother or baby who sleeps next to you, attend an LLL meeting. Or talk with an experienced Sleep Leader about sleeping habits of your child. They can assist you in creating an environment that is safe for your baby and also explain the dangers of SIDS. They can also educate you about the'sweet sleep' of nursing mothers, which includes many of the same protection factors as breastfeeding.
