Great blue herons are beautiful and fascinating birds to watch. They are a symbol of our wetlands and waterways and can be seen around the region during the spring, summer and fall as they hunt and nest. They are often a bit elusive but they can be spotted in many places, especially along our local rivers and ponds.
They are a large bird with a long wingspan, bluish-gray body, black and white markings on the neck and wings, yellow bill, slender legs and feet, and long, S-shaped neck when they are in flight. Their nests are large, thick stick nests on high, sturdy trees near the water.
Heron eggs are laid in pairs and can hatch as early as April or as late as June. Once a heron pair finds the ideal spot for a nest they will begin constructing their nest. In the wild herons use sticks, branches, bark and other materials to build their nests. The nest may look bulky, strong and stable or it may be precariously thin and shallow, almost like a saucer. The nest building can take weeks, and the herons will return to their nest at night to incubate their eggs.
Herons are very sensitive to disturbance during the breeding season and up until the chicks fledge, or leave the nest. yến sào tinh chế should keep a respectful distance from the nest and avoid walking through the heron’s habitat during the month or so of nesting.
When the chicks are young and haven’t yet learned to fly they will spend much of their time sitting on the nest. This can lead to sibling aggression when the older chicks nip and jab at the younger ones. However, in Sapsucker Woods Pond heron families generally produce enough food to feed all of the young.
After a few months of growing, the heron chicks can be seen standing up in the nest and stretching their wings. They also start leaving the nest occasionally to forage with their parents, who will bring them back to eat.
Heron chicks can be difficult to tell apart as they grow because males and females look very similar. But once the chicks pips, viewers can recognize them by their unique coloration and markings.
When a heron is off the nest it may sit in another tree, or it might stay on land and wait for fish to come close by. It is usually possible to see a heron in search of food by watching the direction it is flying, as it makes its way back to a pond or other waterway.
As the young herons get bigger and learn to fly they will leave the nest at night and spend more time foraging on their own. bán yến can be a scary time for them as they must defend themselves against predators and other dangers. But they can survive this period if the adults continue to bring them plenty of fish, as they did at Sapsucker Woods Pond in 2012 and 2013. Donate to support our work to protect and restore North America’s wetland habitats for wildlife and the communities that depend on them!
