The blue-and-gold macaw is a beautiful bird with a stunning visual appeal. Its sociable nature makes it a great companion for families. It is also very good in its interactions, and can quickly learn new phrases and tricks.

Lolita's Personality

It is essential to have clear boundaries set so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that are a joy to play with, interact with, and climb. They must spend at least 2 to 3-hours every day outside to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They love playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They also love playing in parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local bars and restaurants. Apart from being a fun pet, they also make wonderful companions for children.

Despite their adoring appearance, these birds are very loud and can cause a disturbance to those who live close by. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be a nuisance in apartments and condos or near children who might be scared by their roar.

The species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. Because of this, DNA testing is the only reliable method to determine sex. Once sex has been determined pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. This can be a long process and the pet's owner must be patient and recognize that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and help to correct any behavior issues.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita might suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the ocean.

Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as to be a family member in a plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary located on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the rest of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the actual ocean not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who are close to their families until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for 40 years. The nation's most active activists, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her departure from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita many believe that she could be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has expressed a commitment to removing the whale of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary in which she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even reunite with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the beloved whale who died on Friday from what was believed to be a kidney issue.
