What Makes a Good Robot Vacuum?
A quality robot vacuum will save you time and effort when it is time to clean your home regularly. What is a good one?
The more expensive features like mopping and real-time hazard detection systems can make your robot cleaner work longer. We'll talk about the best cleaning and maintenance practices including emptying the trash bin after every use and scrubbing off debris regularly.
Object Detection
A high-quality robot vacuum should be able to detect and avoid obstacles. The most effective robot vacuums utilize cameras, sensors and lasers to guide you around your home, sucking up pet fur, crumbs, and dirt from hard surfaces like tiles, wood and low-pile area rugs. Certain of the top models also include mopping capabilities, which allows them to swish mop pads over the floorboards to clean away dried coffee spills or pet pee. It is important to select a model with Wi-Fi capabilities to set up cleaning schedules and manage the machine from your smartphone. If you have allergies look for a model that empties its onboard dust bin into a larger bin in the base and washes and dries its own filter after every cleaning.
If you're willing to spend more than $500, the most expensive robots offer advanced perks like home mapping and improved obstacle detection. For instance, the premium iRobot J7 series makes use of sensors to track your home's location as it cleans and lets you assign certain rooms or areas to be cleaned. It also has fall-detection sensor to keep the robot from falling down stairs. Other high-end features are self-emptying charging docks as well as the ability to wash your robot's mop pads.
Other models, like the Eufy X10, have smart mapping that can recognize your furniture, walls and other objects. Its sensor system can detect distinctions between soft and hard surfaces, which allows it to avoid scratching or damaging your flooring. It can even detect changes in height, like stairs or a sofa. It also has lidar, which uses lasers to make a real-time map of its surroundings. It is able to work in darkness.
The size of the bin and the battery's lifespan and the charging time are all features to consider when choosing a robot mop or vacuum. A large bin will require less trips to empty it, while the longer battery life and quicker charging times will allow for more cleaning sessions. The suction power is measured in Pascals (Pa), and higher numbers indicate more powerful machines. Find a model that has an impressive Pa rating that is compatible with the floor type you have.
Self-Emptying Base
A self-emptying vacuum base is a fantastic way to add value and convenience to any compatible robot vacuum. It takes away the need to empty the dust bin on board each time you run, and the debris is transferred to a larger bin within the base instead. This greatly reduces the reintroduction of dust and other allergens into the house, and is especially valuable for those living with sensitive family members.
The added feature also means that you can make use of the robot cleaner more often, as you'll be less hesitant to run it over and over if you know you won't need to empty it multiple times during a cleaning session. If you are interested in the robot cleaner that has this feature, you should look for one that has a large-sized dustbin -- at minimum 400ml.
Robot vacuums can be an exciting option for those who have big homes and wish to simplify their cleaning routine. They are great for daily vacuuming and, increasingly mopping, too. You'll be able to spend more time on other chores when you have a robotic vacuum in your home. Many homeowners are amazed at how clean the floors appear after a regular use.
The purchase of a robot vacuum is not inexpensive, but it's well worth it if you can afford the upfront cost. The best robot vacuums are simple to use and can be installed to clean your home while you're at work or away. Some are even able to be scheduled to do their job automatically.
While robot vacuums can be a great addition to any home, they aren't perfect and still require some manual maintenance. If you don't take care to maintain them properly, they can get blocked by hair or other debris that can hinder the machine's performance.
It's easy to maintain your equipment however, it requires time and effort. Many manufacturers provide guidelines on how to take care of their products, and it is recommended to follow them carefully. Outside of scheduled maintenance, you should periodically check the robot vacuum's brushroll, making sure it isn't clogged with pet hair or other particles.
Lidar Navigation
In contrast to optical sensor-based systems which require ambient light to navigate, lidar uses lasers to measure dimensions and distances for mapping and navigation. Robots that utilize this technology are better in getting around obstacles and cleaning small spaces than robots without it.
The app can be used to view the maps or you can make use of the built-in feature which lets you create specific room or zones that are not allowed to enter, like "clean the living room and kitchen". Larger or more complex homes may take longer. It is also important to ensure that your robot does not have any mirrors that extend from floor to ceiling which reflect the laser, causing it to perceive a different space or even crash into itself. It's best to cover these with drapes or paper before tracing your home for the first time.
A good robot vacuum will also be able to discern stuck or tangled objects, even when they're hidden behind furniture. If the vacuum spots any loose cables in its path, it will automatically change direction and attempt to take a different route. If it spots a tripping hazard it will stop moving and notify you via the app or via chirping its on-device alarm.
The best robots are capable of doing this often. The IRobot Roomba 694, for instance was among our most reliable performers cleaning up all coffee grounds and hairs it could reach on hardwood floors. It also performed admirably on carpet, cleaning all but some flour grains from the corners it could reach.
It's not as powerful as our top choice Roborock Q5 Max+, but it's still a great value. Like the more expensive model it's quick to map out rooms and easily navigable, with easy-to-use options for creating areas that aren't allowed to be visited and for making a specific room selection. The bin is big, so it doesn't require a trip to the self-emptying base often and it can cover a larger area before needing to refill.
Mopping
The most effective robot vacuums are ones that offer high performance at a reasonable cost. They do a great job at cleaning bare floors and removing the majority of dirt and debris that has been dropped into carpets due to furniture or toys, as well as other obstacles. They lack the power to clean dirt from carpets and rugs, and they tend to leave dust near baseboards and other edges. Most people use a robot mop in addition to their main robot vacuum for more thorough midweek cleaning.
There are many different types of robot mops available including specialized mops that only mop or vacuum, to hybrid mop designs that include an empty water tank and a dustbin. If you're in the market for a robot mop ensure that it has an auto-emptying base that spits the water that has been contaminated into its clean bin after every cleaning cycle. This makes them less labor-intensive than robo-vacs which require you to empty their tiny dustbins into a larger self-emptying bin yourself after every use.
Also, you need a mop that is able to detect when carpeting is in use and raise its pads sufficiently to avoid wetting the floor. Find a mop that can be programmed to ensure that it can make a map and identify areas that require special attention such as the kitchen or stairs. Many mop and vacuum robots come with side brushes to clean edges and corners more thoroughly.
Robot Vacuum Mops to look out for is the amount of suction power a mop has. Many manufacturers offer Pascal (Pa) and the higher the Pa the more suction. Some models have a Max setting for stubborn dirt.
In terms of ease of use in terms of ease of use, the iRobot Braava Jet X8 Hybrid is our top choice for mop and robot vacuum combination. This machine quickly determines the homes we've tested and makes no-go areas for hardwood floors and rugs. It also automatically empty the clean and dirty bins in its self-emptying Dock following each mopping session. Its only flaw is that it didn't get all the way underneath the kitchen's baseboards, which is a problem that many robotic vacuums and mops have.
