Regarding animal dietary habits, folivores accumulated the highest Ni concentrations, therefore characterized as "high-Ni insects", while floral-reward consumers, both primary (bees) and secondary (Eristalis tenax, Pygopleurus spp., and wasps), bore low Ni loads. Aticaprant datasheet Ni-body load of predators that fed on animals that were passing by was also low. Among floral-reward consumers, short-range fliers (bees of the genera Andrena and Lasioglossum) accumulated higher Ni loads than long-range fliers (Apis mellifera, Bombus terrestris, Eristalis tenax). Solitary Andrena bees accumulated higher Ni concentration than eusocial honeybees (Apis mellifera) and bumblebees (Bombus terrestris); a group of Lasioglossum specimens encompassing both solitary and eusocial bees lay in between. Our results show that diet, foraging distance, and sociality are important factors for Ni transferred into consumers and mutualists, mostly insects that are directly associated with different plant parts of O. lesbiaca. As an essential carrier of hazardous substances, fugitive road dust has become a severe issue in China. In this study, 212 road dust samples from 53 cities in China were collected to comprehensively investigate the spatial variations, potential sources, and cancer risk of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 16 nitro-PAHs. The total PAHs concentrations ranged from 0.07 to 345 μg/g dry weight, which is at a moderate level compared to other regions in the world. The mean concentration of Σ16nitro-PAHs was 111 ± 115 ng/g, which is 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than that of Σ16PAHs. A clear geographical trend of dust PAHs and nitro-PAHs was observed in the northeast, north, and east coastal regions of China at a higher level. Moreover, a significant correlation between latitude and PAHs/nitro-PAHs revealed the influences of outdoor temperature and coal combustion for heating in the different regions on the emission and reaction of PAHs and nitro-PAHs. The secondary formation of most nitro-PAHs increases with a decrease in latitude indicated that solar radiation and temperature are important factors on secondary formation of nitro-PAHs. The average concentration of total PAHs and their derivatives in trunk road samples were statistically higher than those in other road samples (p less then 0.05), indicating the influence of traffic load on target compound concentration. Generally, the primary sources of PAHs in the road dust samples were coal combustion (23.9%), vehicles (57.1%), and wood/biomass combustion (19.0%). For nitro-PAHs, the main sources were secondary formation (30.9%), biomass/coal combustion (28.4%), and vehicles (44.9%). Furthermore, a moderate potential carcinogenic risk due to PAHs and nitro-PAHs in the dust samples was found in China. The paper examines the variability of long-wave radiation fluxes in two contrasting types of urban active surfaces - grassy surface and surface without plants (bare soil) in Wrocław (Poland) within a 12-year period (August 2007-July 2019). The study used net radiation and heat balance formulas to calculate the share of individual radiation fluxes in these balances, and then utilized the Stefan-Boltzmann formula to calculate the effective temperatures of researched surfaces. The analysis showed the temporal variability of these fluxes against the background of weather and climatic conditions and in relation to the variability of short-wave radiation fluxes. The role of long-wave radiation fluxes in forming net radiation was examined in detail to show the buffering role of vegetation surfaces regarding the variability of solar radiation fluxes and their heat effects. The mean monthly values of outgoing long-wave radiation fluxes change from 309.0 W·m-2 for bare soil, 309.8 W·m-2 for grassy surface, and 288.8 W·m-2 for downward atmospheric radiation to respectively 435.8, 425.0 and 369.4 W·m-2 in July. The coefficient of variability for long-wave radiation daily fluxes are approximately one order of magnitude lower than for the short-wave radiation. The differences between values of long-wave radiation fluxes for bare soil and grassy surfaces vary from slight negative values in winter to relatively sizable positive values during the vegetation period (March-October). The weakening of the buffering effect for grassy surface and how air temperature then changes considerably compared to the effective temperature of the active surfaces were explained using the dry summer period of August 2015 as example. The obtained results are important, as they provide empirical arguments for urban planning to extend plant areas' share in big cities as well as to introduce there a friendly environmental system of irrigation in these areas using renewable solar energy.Safety and environmental behavior of bisphenol A (BPA) alternatives have attracted considerable attention because of their wide use. In the present study, toxicity and biotransformation of bisphenol S (BPS), a primary alternative to BPA, in Chlorella vulgaris were investigated. BPS had a significant inhibition on the growth rate of C. vulgaris with an inhibition rate of 41.6%, 103.7% and 238.4% under exposure of 1, 10 and 100 mg L-1 BPS, respectively. BPS (2 d EC50 3.16 mg L-1) had a higher acute toxicity to C. vulgaris than BPA (2 d EC50 41.43 mg L-1), but its toxicity was gradually lower than BPA as the exposure time increased. BPS underwent rapid degradation and was more recalcitrant to degradation by C. vulgaris than BPA at 5 and 10 mg L-1. BPS was less accumulated in algal cells than BPA (p less then 0.05), suggesting that it may pose less risk than BPA on the aquatic algophagous organisms and other high-trophic-level predators through the food chain. In addition, six new metabolites of BPS were identified in algal cells using high-resolution mass spectrometry. This is the first time that degradation pathway for BPS in algae is described, and these results represent a significant advance in understanding the fate of BPS and other BPA substitutes in the aquatic environment. The concentrations, distributions, and biomagnification of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in environmental and biological media in a terrestrial grass ecosystem were studied, The total PBDE concentrations in grasses were 4.00 × 10-2 to 4.28 ng·g-1. The total PBDE concentration in weasel muscle (23.2 ng·g-1 l.w.) was the highest concentrations of all animal tissue samples, and the total PBDE concentration in hair from local herdsmen (22.2 ng·g-1 l.w.) was second highest. Less-brominated PBDEs were found to be more strongly biomagnified than more-brominated PBDEs in the grassland food web. PBDEs were found to be much more strongly biomagnified in the food chains of homothermic animals than heterothermic animals. More-brominated PBDEs were not markedly biomagnified in the grassland food web. For example, BDE-153 was not biomagnified in the grassland wildlife food chain but was clearly biomagnified through the sheep, cattle, or horse hair to human hair route. The biomagnification factors and log Kows negatively correlated for the toad-snake, lizard-snake, and mouse-weasel food chains.
