Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to let parents sleep close to their baby at night without the risk of SIDS. They are only recommended for up to 6 months, when your baby is ready to transition to the cot.
Mehack is an MFM home tester, loved the fact that this model features a bassinet that can be used throughout the home. It also has the ability to rock manually. It was also easy to put together and came in its own bag for easy storage.
Size
Cots and cot beds vary in terms of size in size, with cots smaller than cot beds. They also can be converted into toddler beds, whereas they are typically used until three years old. old. There are two sizes of wooden cots - big and standard that can be converted into a toddler bed or a cot. If you'd like your child (or children) to be comfortable sleeping in the larger cot, it's a good option to select the larger size.
MFM mother home test Jasmine was pleased that this bedside cot was a little bigger than the Moses basket but not too big for her baby's room. It's easy to get her baby into and out of the cot for nighttime feeding or soothing and that the quality is excellent when compared to other cots she's seen that are flimsy.
Another home-based test subject, Emily, likes how versatile the Maxi-Cosi Lora is it's a drop-off bassinet that you can move around the home, and it's a blast too. It also has an incline for reflux and a machine washable breathable liner. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. Contrary to some International or European cot brands, the Lora can fit South African cot mattresses so you don't need to purchase a new mattress as your baby grows. However, it does require an exclusive bedding set (60x120cm). Find the ideal mattress for your cot here.
Height
When selecting a cot for the bed be sure to choose one that can be elevated to a height that's comfortable for you to feed your the baby. It should also be able to be lowered to a level that is not in the way so that you can pull your baby to feed them at night or soothe him. This feature is especially helpful in the event of recovering from an operation such as a C-section. For example, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma huddle up to 70cm.
Another thing to think about is how low you want the base of your cot to be. Some mums find that it is easier to lift their children from standard Moses baskets when the base is at the lowest level and others prefer a higher height to provide them with more stability. One of our mom testers stated that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It has a collapsible side you can push at the touch the button.
Be aware that a bedside or bassinet should not be used until your baby is able to hold their head without assistance, usually at approximately 6 months. This is due to the risk of inhaling suffocation. You should also be aware that when your child is old enough to turn a bassinet/bedside sleeping system into a cot, they must remove the sides as soon as they are able to do this. This will stop them from getting out or falling out of the bed.
Design
There are a variety of cribs that are bedside, ranging from basic to extravagant. The more expensive options could include features like an integrated night light and a calming centre that plays sounds and music and offers two levels of vibration to help soothe your baby back to sleep, or even an adjustable base that allows you to easily reach your baby for feedings. Some models can be transformed into the toddler bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.
For instance the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket category, has an adjustable base that allows you to take your baby and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get up. This is ideal for new mothers who are recovering from Caesarean births or who need to stay in bed for longer durations of time. Jasmine is an MFM mum who tested this product at home, said it was easy to operate and made it easier to reach her baby - especially after the c-section.
wooden bedside cot is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the category of the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It comes with an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's a bit larger than the other bedside cribs we tried, but it folds flat in its travel bag, so it's quite compact when not in use.
MFM mom home tester Leya also appreciated the function of this crib for bed, explaining how it was designed with the needs of parents and children in mind. rocking bedside crib is lightweight and easy to move. She said that the bassinet's swivelling base was brilliant because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to facilitate access for moms who are recovering from C-sections.
Safety
A large bedside cot's main security characteristic is that it can easily be adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their child to feed or comfort them, or change his or his or her nappy. This makes it ideal for new mothers recovering from an c-section. Look for a design that allows you to lower one side with the push of a button, so you can effortlessly lift your baby without getting out of the bed. This is particularly important as your baby grows older and becomes more mobile. Avoid adding anything that could increase the chance of suffocation or injury, such as duvets and pillowcases that can cause your baby to overheat.
The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product issues, such as gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC examined the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance the products would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the rail that is lowered. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements were not feasible or effective in reducing number of instances in which infants are trapped between the bedside rail and an adult bed.
A majority of the incidents reported in the NPR included bedside sleepers with multiple uses that can be converted to other types of use, such as bassinets and play yards. Many commenters suggested that the CPSC include a different provision to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers that are multi-use which would permit them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that is removable. Attachments can be permanently fixed or removed when the item is not being used as a bassinet for babies.
The CPSC is examining the comments and other suggestions received in response to the NPR regarding bedside sleeping. The Commission will take into consideration these comments when deciding on the final rule which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
