Nitrogen remains an important macronutrient in plant root growth due to its application in amino acid production, in addition to its more elusive role in cellular signalling through nitric oxide (NO). NO is widely accepted as an important signalling oxidative radical across all organisms, leading to its study in a wide range of biological pathways. Along with its more stable NO donor, S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO), formed by NO non-enzymatically in the presence of glutathione (GSH), NO is a redox-active molecule capable of mediating target protein cysteine thiols through the post translational modification, S-nitrosation. S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) thereby acts as a mediator to pathways regulated by NO due to its activity in the irreversible reduction of GSNO to oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and ammonia. GSNOR is thought to be pleiotropic and often acts by mediating the cellular environment in response to stress conditions. Under optimal conditions its activity leads to growth by transcriptional upregulation of the nitrate transporter, NRT2.1, and through its interaction with phytohormones like auxin and strigolactones associated with root development. However, in response to highly nitrosative and oxidative conditions its activity is often downregulated, possibly through an S-nitrosation site on GSNOR at cys271, Though GSNOR knockout mutated plants often display a stunted growth phenotype in all structures, they also tend to exhibit a pre-induced protective effect against oxidative stressors, as well as an improved immune response associated with NO accumulation in roots.National rates of aquatic food consumption in Pacific Island Countries and Territories are among the highest in the world, yet the region is suffering from extensive levels of diet-related ill health. The aim of this paper is to examine the variation in consumption patterns and in nutrient composition of aquatic foods in the Pacific, to help improve understanding of their contribution to food and nutrition security. For this examination we analysed nutrient composition data and trade data from two novel region-specific databases, as well as consumption data from national and village level surveys for two Melanesian case studies, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands. Results demonstrated that consumption depends on availability and the amount and type of aquatic food consumed, and its contribution to nutrition security varies within different geographic and socio-demographic contexts. More data is needed on locally relevant species and consumption patterns, to better inform dietary guidelines and improve public health both now and into the future. Advice on aquatic food consumption must consider the nutrient composition and quantity of products consumed, as well as accessibility through local food systems, to ensure they contribute to diverse and healthy diets.Within the past two decades, three zoonotic betacoronaviruses have been associated with outbreaks causing severe respiratory disease in humans. Of these, Middle East respiratory s yndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is the only zoonotic coronavirus that is known to consistently result in frequent zoonotic spillover events from the proximate reservoir host-the dromedary camel. A comprehensive understanding of infection in dromedaries is critical to informing public health recommendations and implementing intervention strategies to mitigate spillover events. Experimental models of reservoir disease are absolutely critical in understanding the pathogenesis and transmission, and are key to testing potential dromedary vaccines against MERS-CoV. In this review, we describe experimental infections of dromedary camels as well as additional camelid models used to further understand the camel's role in MERS-CoV spillover to humans.The association between low vitamin D status and the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus is well established; however, intervention trials that increased serum vitamin D (through ultraviolet B exposure or dietary supplementation) provide mixed outcomes. Recent evidence suggests that metabolites directly related to vitamin D receptor activation-1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 and 24R,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3-may be better markers of vitamin D repletion status. We tested the hypothesis that a vitamin D metabolite (VDM) index, calculated as the sum of normalized fasting serum concentrations of 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 and 24R,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, is associated with metabolic function. We measured subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue volume, intrahepatic triglyceride content, maximum oxygen uptake, insulin sensitivity (4 h hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp), and insulin secretion (3 h meal tolerance test with mathematical modeling) and calculated the VDM index in 65 healthy Asian adults. Subjects with a low VDM index had lower peripheral insulin sensitivity and beta-cell function compared to subjects with a high VDM index (both p less then 0.05), matched for age, sex, BMI, and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 was not associated with peripheral insulin sensitivity or beta-cell function. Our results suggest that, rather than enhancing vitamin D substrate availability, upregulation of vitamin D action is more likely to lead to improvements in glucose homeostasis.In this paper, a sensor using modified Split Ring Resonators (SRRs) is designed, simulated, fabricated, and used for advanced investigation and precise measurements of the real part and imaginary part solid dielectrics' permittivity. Adding vertical strips tightly coupled to the outer ring of the SRR leads to the appearance of two resonant frequencies at 1.24 GHz and 2.08 GHz. This modified geometry also assures an improved sensitivity. Using the full wave electromagnetic solver, both the unloaded and loaded sensors are investigated. The numerical simulations are used to develop a mathematical model based on a curve fitting tool for both resonant frequencies, allowing to obtain analytical relations for real and imaginary parts of permittivity as a function of the sample's thickness and quality factor. ANA-12 The sensor is designed and fabricated on 1.6 mm thick FR-4 substrate. The measurements of different samples, such as transparent glass, acrylic glass, plexiglass, and Teflon, confirm that the modified SRR sensor is easy to implement and gives accurate results for all cases, with measurement errors smaller than 4.
