Why Paint on a Wooden Palette?
A wooden palette is lightweight and strong, with smooth surfaces. It also has warm tones that help painters to perceive colors accurately when painting.
Make use of boiled linseed, a lint-free rag or paper towel to seal a wooden palette. Rub the oil onto the surface of the wood palette. Repeat daily, both front and back.
Wooden Palettes for Oil Painters
Painting on a wooden palette brings all of your oil paints at your fingertips. This makes it much easier to mix colors and move them across your canvas or board. It's also a great method to keep your brushes at your fingertips. This palette has helped me reduce the amount of time that I spend turning around my body in order to reach my brushes to reload them. I've noticed that it also aids me in my accuracy and consistency.
You can buy wood palettes that are stained and sealed to withstand the effects of water and standard solvents for artists, or you can buy them unfinished and stain them yourself. Sealing the wood prior to painting will help it absorb less oil from your oil paints. To do this, pour a small pool of Linseed oil onto the palette, and then rub it into the palette with a lint free rag until it is saturated. After that, clean off any excess oil and your palette is now ready to use.
I like to tone the linseed prior using it by adding a few drops of it to a brown medium like burnt sienna (or yellow ochre). This helps me visualize the shadows I'll be creating in my paintings and it helps me visualize how the colors will appear against the wood. The tone will also help me to distinguish the dark and light values in my paintings.
Over time, a properly used wooden pallet will develop a gorgeous patina. It will get more opaque and smooth, due to the oil in your paints staining it little and the pigments mixing together to form a varnish-like coating. It's a gorgeous thing to behold.
Some artists prefer using an acrylic sealer with a clear finish on their wooden palettes, this can protect the wood and give it a stunning shine. However, I find that the old way of applying thin coats of linseed oil is perfectly for me. It takes a little longer than using polyurethane but it's worth the wait since you can apply a coat every time you clean your palette, and it will only improve with time.
Wooden Palettes for Acrylic Painters
A wooden palette is a popular choice for oil and acrylic painting. It has a wide solid, stable surface that blocks pigment absorbtion and promotes mixing of colors. After each use, a quick wiping with a cloth or paper towel will make cleanup easy. The majority of stores selling arts and crafts offer wooden palettes, which are affordable.
There are many options for acrylic painters today. Plastic palettes are coated with a nonstick substance and are light. They also withstand damage caused by solvents. They can be cleaned using warm soapy tap water and are suitable for acrylics, and other materials. They are typically available in various sizes and deep wells to mix colors.
A paper or styrofoam dish is another popular option for acrylic painting. They are cheap and disposable, so they can be used for just one painting session, making them an ideal solution for plein air painting. They could take in some paint, however, which could be difficult to wash.
One of the most effective alternatives for a permanent acrylic paint palette is a piece of sanded wood such as spruce or pine with a thumb hole. This allows the artist to hold the palette using the thumb placed inside the hole, leaving the other fingers to hold brushes and the mahlstick. The thumb hole also helps prevent the fingers from getting too dirty when using the palette.
New Wood Pallet For Sale agronytradingllc make their own wooden palettes using household items. An old aluminum or plastic foil covered dish can be a good place to start. You can also pick up old ceramic or glass dishes. They can be found at yard sales and thrift shops and are usually quite attractive. You can even try an tin foil piece, which will resist the absorption of paint and will be easy to clean.
A palette that stays wet is a substitute for the DIY palette that is extremely popular. They are essentially an empty plastic container with a tight lid. You soak a sponge in water and place it in the bottom of the box. Then, you place an extra sheet of paper on top to keep paint moist. The box can be closed and the sponge and paper will remain damp for several days. You can always add water to the palette when the paper starts to dry.
Wooden Palettes For Watercolor Painters
If you're painting with oil paints or watercolors, using a wooden palette can be the best option. These palettes are lightweight compared to other alternatives, particularly paper and glass and are strong enough for easy handling. They have cutouts inside for your thumb and other fingers. This makes them easy to hold during long periods. They have a satin-finish that allows paint to be applied without being absorbed. They are also easy to clean and last for years of use.
Wooden palettes were among the first mixing surfaces utilized by artists, and they are still an important part of many artist's studios today. They provide an elegant, professional appearance and are perfect for mixing acrylics, oils, and alkyds. Additionally, they are often sourced from sustainable forestry practices. This makes a wooden pallet a sustainable choice for contemporary artists.
Regular cleaning and re-oiling is the most important factor in the longevity of a wooden pallet. Reapplying linseed oils or a wood conditioner that is specially designed can help prevent excessive absorption and extend the life of the palette. Based on the type of wood, re-oiling a palette can be as simple as pouring a puddle of oil into the center of the palette and wiping it with a clean, lint-free cloth.
Some artists even choose to personalize their wooden palettes by carving initials or other decorative elements into them. This is a great way to make your palette feel as if it's part of your work and create a sense of history for your tool. Some of these palettes can be personalized with lids that lock in the place. This is a fantastic feature for traveling.
Instagram has also contributed to the popularity of wooden palettes. Artists share photos of their beautifully-arranged setups on Instagram to inspire others. These visual clues serve as an example of how painting on a wooden palette can be a rewarding, artistic experience. As you continue to use your wooden palette, it will eventually become a favorite piece of equipment and a reminder of your creative journey.
Wooden Palettes for Mixed Media Painters
When we think of a palette for painting the first image that comes to mind is one made of wood used by old masters. These palettes, though used by some artists are not suitable for watercolours or acrylics because of their porous surfaces. A new palette for painting was designed to solve this problem. These new palettes have been constructed from tempered glass that is extremely durable and won't break if dropped. The palettes come in a variety of sizes and shapes which means you can pick one that fits comfortably in your palm and is easy to use.
These new palettes, referred to as "stay-wet" palettes, will keep your paints moist and useable for a long time after you have completed painting. To prepare a stay-wet palette, simply add your preferred oil painting medium on the back of the palette and rub it in until it looks slightly tacky (like soft butter). Use a paper towel to get rid of any excess oil, and make sure to get into all grooves of the wood grain. This process, also known as seasoning, assists the palette retain the pigment and oil, while allowing hairs of the brush to pass through easily.
Another good way to prep for a wooden palette is using a drying oil like linseed, safflower or walnut - and rubbing it on the surface of the palette using an abrasive. This will make the wood more durable and make it more resistant to solvents and water. This will also stop the paint from sticking to the surface of your palette when wet.
Some painters prefer to use disposable palettes, like paper cups or styrofoam plates. This is a great option because it doesn't soak up paint too much, and it's also easy to clean. I prefer a wooden palette because it is more durable and feels more comfortable in my hands. I also love the idea that I'm preserving the tradition of the previous masters!
