Buying a Bedside Crib For Travel
The dimensions of this crib are ideal for moms. It's larger than the Moses Basket, but smaller than a Cot Bed. It can also fold down to just a quarter of its size and then put in a handy bag for transport.
Keep in mind that the crib is intended for sleeping. bedside cot used as pillows, blankets and pillows can make a child suffocate.
Safety
If you're looking to purchase a travel crib you'll want to be sure that the manufacturer complies with all safety standards. The best place to start is the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website, which will let you know whether or not a certain crib is being recalled. Choose a mattress that fits the crib of your baby so it doesn't slide through the gaps or pose the risk of suffocation.
Look for cribs or bassinets that meet the current safety standards of 2022. You should also avoid cribs that are older, modified cribs or drop side cribs that are used for travel as they aren't tested and may pose risks to your baby's safety.
A travel crib should be strong and well-constructed. Make sure you check for broken, missing or loose screws, as well as other hardware. If you are using a playard it should have mesh windows and sturdy walls to allow air circulation. The slats of the crib should be spaced no more than 2 and 3/8 inches apart to keep baby's head and legs from getting trapped. Don't put any blankets, pillows, stuffed animals or toys in the crib. These objects can choke or strangle your baby. They should be removed from the crib at the time your child is able to pull up on their knees and hands or prior to five months of age or 5 months, whichever is first.
Examine frequently for broken or loose screws and other hardware. This is particularly important when traveling with a baby. Take all plastic out of the crib, too.
If you're using a portable crib be sure that it's not placed under a large window. A window is an injury from falling and your baby may be injured in the event that they crash into it. Even if your child is old enough to be able to roll over, it's best to keep their sleeping area away from windows. It is important to wake your baby when they begin to roll over during sleep.
Portability
If you're to a holiday, have relatives staying over, or simply want a safe crib for sleepovers with your friends, a portable crib (or playard or playard, as they're often called) is a good option. These foldable contraptions come with an extremely comfortable mattress that can accommodate babies up to 15kg. bedside cot sale are easy to put together and compact when closed.
The BabyBjorn Travel Crib is a fav among MFM home testers, who appreciate the fact it can be folded and stored in a few minutes and that its simple drop-down panels that can be operated with one hand are easy for even bleary-eyed parents to use. It's not the lightest pack-and-play on our list however it's a decent weight, weighing just under 15 pounds. It has regular handles instead of an e-bag strap, which some find more comfortable to carry around.
The Joie Kubbie Sleep is another fantastic alternative. It combines a bedside bassinet and crib into one compact unit. This is ideal for holidays and overnight stays with friends and family. It's not the least expensive however it comes with an abundance of features that are all-dancing and all-singing like a storage basket, soothing colour-changing night lights and white noise. It also has lullabies to help your baby fall asleep and sleep. Its bassinet sits up higher than most to make it easier to access during the early days when mom is still recovering.
The fabrics are machine washable and wipeable, making it easy to clean. It's also incredibly quick to install and our MFM tester being able to have it ready in just 10 minutes. You'll need to buy an additional mattress, however.
Feeding
It is essential that your child is comfortable and safe when you travel, whether on pleasure or business. While some families may be attracted to use a crib or bassinet that they already own but it's better to purchase one specifically made for travel. They are smaller, have mesh sides that permit parents to check on their babies without disturbing them. They are light enough to allow for easy transport between destinations. They also meet all the safety standards of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and have not been recalled.
If you have to utilize a crib for your bed, it's recommended that your child be positioned on their backs and that the bed be free of blankets, pillows and animals stuffed. Sharing sleeping in a bed with parents isn't advised for any baby regardless of age, and this kind of co-sleeping is linked to an increased risk of SIDS. If you must co-sleep on occasion, ensure that you only do this while your baby is asleep, and that you're both awake and fully dressed.
There are many types of cribs for babies and newborns.
Some are shaped like a mini crib or a Moses basket, and others have sides that can be put down into the bed of the parent. This allows parents to access their infant at any time during the night to soothe and feed them, while avoiding the dangers of co-sleeping. The AAP warns against this because of the danger of being suffocated. Examples include the Arm's Reach Clear-Vue Bassinet, an infant bed that is attached to the parent's mattress. This is a good option for older children, as the sides can be raised to allow you to reach the infant without having to lift them from the bed. Another option is the travel cot with a built-in bassinet which can be removed from the top of the crib which makes it easier to lift up an infant who is sleeping for feeding or other care.
Sleeping
Bedside cribs are a fantastic method to sleep in a safe environment with your baby. They are placed next to your bed so you can easily reach them during night feedings and check on their sleep without disturbing them. Some cribs have a drop side that can be lower to make this easier and others come with an adjustable height to ensure they are able to be able to fit in your bed at home or on the go.
In the past, it was suggested that infants have their own bedrooms. However, parents are increasingly preferring to sleep in a co-sleep. Also known as rooming-in, this arrangement allows babies to be close to their parents but remain safe and separate from their own bassinet or crib. There are a variety of co-sleepers that are available, including the iCrib which is designed to be a portable crib that fits on top of your bed or a regular crib. It has a lightweight frame, a mattress that can be removed and is able to be folded up for easy storage. The Joie Roomie Go crib is another alternative. It is attached to the bed edge and features 7 height positions, as well as a tummy-tilt to ease colic and reflux. Our MFM home testers loved this crib for its small folding and easy to use. It is also available in different colours.
You can also purchase bedside cribs that are freestanding, such as our Lilly or Alain which you can put on top of an existing bed frame. The cribs have an elongated side that slides down to allow you to grab your baby for night feedings. However bedside cot newborn are completely self-contained so your baby can remain asleep peacefully. These models meet the new BS EN1130:2019 safety standards which require a 120mm separation between your mattress and the child's crib.
There are also cribs for travel available. They are designed specifically to be taken along on the road. They are typically smaller and less bulky than standard cribs, making it easier to carry them into and out of cars and hotels. Munchkin Brica, for example can be set up in under a minute and folded down in less than three pounds. It is therefore easy to lift and transport.
