Lolita's Care

For years, activists have been pleading for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, macaw parrot cost got the chance to return to sea.

Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They cause harm to her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, pledged to come up with plans with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to open water eventually. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live for the rest of her days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami house and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who are close to their family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her retirement from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

As is the case with any species of animal, a captive gold and blue macaw's well-being is dependent on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds need high-quality food items, and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. A well-fed macaw in captivity can live for up to 60 years old. This majestic bird also needs plenty of space to fly and exercise.

A macaw with gold and blue eyes is a charming pet that is also quite intelligent. They are known for their ability to learn new tricks and words quickly. This bird is ideal for those just beginning their journey into an avian companionship.

Additionally, this bird requires a lot of interaction, and will bond with her human family members effortlessly. Blue and gold macaws often make loud vocalizations, including "flock calls," which is part of their normal behavior. They may also squabble or chew at times, particularly when they're angry or bored. This type of behavior is expected of potential pet owners.

The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of information about Lolita's health and status but there are still questions. Certain experts, like Akromas who was the one who trained or supervised the care of Lolita at some point, have raised concerns about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats 115 pounds of salmon, herring, capelin, and squid every day.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita is being criticized over the quality of food that they provide to their killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and while the species is endangered in the wild, she is in an aquarium that many say is too small for her.

Lolita's Health

While her beauty is unquestionable However, her health continues to decline. She has been a source of concern for animal welfare groups that wish to see her returned into the wild. Lolita who has been living at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction there for decades. She has suffered from chronic illnesses and a debilitating illness that has left her in a vulnerable condition.

The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current condition. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has posted monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates show that Toki is aging rapidly and that her health is declining.

Since her captor doesn't have to divulge this information, it is not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often a part in the deaths of captive orcas.

Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita Many people are hopeful that she may be closer than ever to living a wild life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to move the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

The move comes following years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. These plans came too late to save the beloved whale who died on Friday as a result of what was thought to be a kidney problem.
