Bedside Sleeper Cot
A bedside sleeper cot (also known as bassinet) can be attached to the side of your bed so that your baby is close enough to be able to enjoy feeding at night, but is safe in their own sleeping area. Our mums love that they are easy to reach and can also rotate or drop the sides to make them more accessible.
Safety
The bedside sleeper allows parents to monitor, soothe and feed their infants at night without worrying about the dangers of bed-sharing. This could lead to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The cots adhere to NHS guidelines for co-sleeping, and are recommended by childcare experts such as Dr McKenna, director of Mother-Baby Behavioural Sleep Laboratory.
They also help foster healthy attachment and breastfeeding by keeping babies close. This will help them reach their milestones in their development. Parents should seek out bassinets that are simple to clean, safe to use, and have been endorsed by a trusted organization like JPMA.
In 2023, ASTM updated its version of the bedside sleeper voluntary standard F2906 to respond to newer products that convert from a bassinet into a bedside sleeper, by lowering one side rail next to an adult bed, allowing certain areas of the lower side to be elevated height above the mattress, which presents an increased risk of trapping. The CPSC's direct final rule incorporates by reference this 2023 revision to the current mandatory standard in section 104 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) for sturdy toddler or infant products that have been used for longer than 180 days and is expected to decrease the chance of injuries.
It is important to remember that a bassinet or bedside sleeper, should never be used in conjunction with pillows or blankets. This can be an entrapment risk since infants aren't able to lift their heads high enough to keep them away from soft objects. A reclining position may cause the head to tip forward, blocking their airway. Always place your child on their back in a crib, bassinet, play yard or bedside sleeper and be certain to use an appropriate fitted sheet that meets federal requirements.
Convenience
It is important to keep your baby close throughout the night. This can help create bonds between parents and newborns. bedside cot newborn attach securely to the side of your mattress which allows you to easily reach your baby to change diapers, feeds, and comforting in the middle of the night. We searched for models with mesh sides that were translucent enough to see through, so you could watch your child without needing to leave the bed.
It is essential that the bassinet you choose is tested as safe for babies by an independent testing organisation, and meets all the specifications of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). You should choose a bassinet with a wide base and a sturdy attachment system. A breathable mattress should be included.
Find a model that has a manual rocking feature that's gentle on your baby and can help settle them to sleep. Some models also have a tilt option that can be helpful for infants suffering from reflux or colic but should only be used on the guidance of your doctor or health professional.
Some bassinets come with a mattress, while others require you to purchase a mattress separately. Make sure you buy the right mattress to fit the bedside bassinet, since second-hand mattresses can be too soft and could pose a risk of SIDS. You should also purchase a comfortable fitted bed sheet and muslin baby blanket. Make sure the fabric lining and foam mattress, which can be washed by machine to make it easier to clean. A storage shelf or a basket is a great option for storing necessities such as nappies, clothes and muslins. There are many models that have wheels that make it easier to move around the home.
Support for breastfeeding
If you decide to breastfeed, a bedside sleeper cot will help you get the most out of your night-time feedings. Attached to your bed you can reach across to feed your baby whenever they wake up. The side of the cot can be lowered to create a bed to sleep side-by-side. Some models can also tilt to support reflux.
The curved sides make it easy to see and help lift your baby up to feed. They won't roll off the side. Some bedside cribs come with an automatic rocking feature which can calm your child and help them to fall back asleep faster after eating.
When it comes to keeping baby clean, a soft bedding and a removable material that can be washed in the machine are a great option. Some models have gentle vibration or rocking functions which can soothe your baby to sleep. Breastfeeding mothers will also appreciate having plenty of storage.
It is a good idea for breastfeeding mothers to share a bed with their babies. This lets them develop bonds of friendship while they sleep. Research has proven that babies who are breastfed who share a sleeping space with their mothers have better outcomes than babies who are bottle-fed. However, it is important to be aware of the risks and practices involved in bed-sharing with a newborn baby and select a mattress that is safe for your baby.
Some sleeping bags in the bed have soft surfaces on the edges that can keep your baby in the bag. Also, be aware not to let the bedside sleeper slide backwards, creating an opening that your child may crawl into or roll over.
If you are concerned about the safety of a bedside sleeper you should consider attending an LLL meeting or speaking to a Sleep Leader to find out more about the sleeping habits of breastfeeding mothers and their babies. They can help you create a safe sleeping environment for your baby and help to understand the dangers of SIDS. They can also educate you about the "sweet sleep" of nursing mothers, which has many of the same protection factors as breastfeeding.
