We previously reported on a patient with schizophrenia and a balanced translocation between chromosomes 4 and 13 and found that the breakpoint within chromosome 4 is located near the LDB2 gene. We show here that Ldb2 knockout (KO) mice displayed multiple deficits relevant to mental disorders. In particular, Ldb2 KO mice exhibited deficits in the fear-conditioning paradigm. Analysis of the amygdala suggested that dysregulation of synaptic activities controlled by the immediate early gene Arc is involved in the phenotypes. We show that LDB2 forms protein complexes with known transcription factors. Consistently, ChIP-seq analyses indicated that LDB2 binds to > 10,000 genomic sites in human neurospheres. We found that many of those sites, including the promoter region of ARC, are occupied by EGR transcription factors. Our previous study showed an association of the EGR family genes with schizophrenia. Collectively, the findings suggest that dysregulation in the gene expression controlled by the LDB2-EGR axis underlies a pathogenesis of subset of mental disorders.
Whether depression is a prodromal phase or risk factor for dementia is under debate. We aimed to unveil the nature of depression-dementia association by looking into the time window of depression occurrence.

Dementia-free twins (n=41,727) from the Swedish Twin Registry were followed-up for 18 years. Data were analyzed using generalized estimating equation (GEE) for all individuals and conditional logistic regression for co-twin matched pairs.

In the GEE model, multi-adjusted odds ratios (ORs; 95% confidence intervals [CIs]) of dementia were 1.46 (1.09-1.95) for mid-life, 2.16 (1.82-2.56) for late-life, 2.24 (1.49-3.36) for mid- to late-life, and 2.65 (1.17-5.98) for lifelong depression. The ORs in conditional logistic regression and in GEE did not differ significantly (P=0.60). Education ≥8 years attenuated dementia risk associated with mid-life depression.

To investigate the association of serum vitamin D and nasal secretion antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) levels with the severity of acute bronchiolitis.

We conducted a prospective single pediatric tertiary care center cohort study of inpatients aged 0-18 months with a first episode of acute bronchiolitis from November 1st 2014 to April 30th 2017. Disease severity was determined by the length of hospitalization and supplemental hospital data. Qualitative measurements included serum 25(OH)D and nasal secretion LL-37 and β-defensin-2 levels. Correlations were examined with the Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis criteria for qualitative and the correlation coefficient Spearman's rho for quantitative factors. Multiple linear and logarithmic regression were performed to adjust for confounding factors.

The study population consisted of 153 infants and toddlers with median age 3.1 months (interquartile range1.6-4.9). No association was found between serum 25(OH)D and AMPs nasal secretions levels. Serum 25(OH)D and nasal secretion β-defensin-2 levels were not associated with the severity of bronchiolitis. In contrast, LL-37 levels were inversely associated with the length of hospitalization (rho = -0.340, p = .001), the need for medication use (p = .001), as well as the duration of oxygen supplementation (rho = -0.339, p = .001), and intravenous fluid administration (rho = -0.323, p = .001). This association remained significant after adjustment for potential confounders.

Animal-related facial fractures can affect livelihoods impacting the hard and soft tissues of the face. Animal husbandry and recreational sports have close relationships with animals, which can lead to injuries equivalent to those of road traffic accidents and assaults. Our aim is to describe epidemiological trends of animal-related facial fractures in the paediatric and adult age group across South Australia.

A retrospective review from January 2012 to January 2017 at the Women and Children's Hospital and Royal Adelaide Hospital in Adelaide. All animal-related injuries that attended or were referred to the unit were included in this study.

There were 50 patients who presented with an animal-related facial fracture. There was an equal distribution of males to females with horses as the most common animal to cause injury from kicking. The orbit and orbitozygomatic fracture equally represented the most common type of facial fracture with 38% of all cases having an associated injury. The operative rate was 56% with four post-operative complications.
