Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to allow parents to rest with their baby at night without the risk of SIDS. They are only recommended up to 6 months old, at which point your baby is old enough to move to the cot.
Mehack Mehack, an MFM home tester, loved the feature that this model comes with a bassinet that can be used all around the house. It also has a manual rocking feature. It was also easy to put together and came with its own travel bag for easy storage.
Size
Cots and cot beds differ in size and size, with cots being a bit smaller than cot beds. They also can be converted into toddler beds, while the cot beds are typically used up to three years old. If you're looking for a wooden cot, you'll find two sizes to choose from both large and standard both of which will convert into a cot bed/toddler mattress. If you wish for your child (or children) to be capable of sleeping in the larger cot, it's a good option to select the larger size.
MFM mother home tester Jasmine was pleased that this bedside cot was slightly bigger than the Moses basket, but not too large for her baby's room. It's easy to lift her baby in and out for feeding or calming and the quality is top-notch, compared with many she's seen that feel flimsy.
Emily who is a home tester, is awed by the versatility of the Maxi-Cosi lora which is a lift-off, portable bassinet. It also rocks. It also comes with an option to tilt the reflux upwards and a machine-washable liner that is breathable. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. In contrast to International or European cot brands, the Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't have to buy another mattress as your baby grows. It does require a special bedding set (60x120cm). Here is the ideal mattress for your cot.
Height
When you are choosing a cot for your bed be sure to choose one that can be raised to a level that is comfortable for you to feed your baby. It must also be lower away from the way, so you can lift up your baby towards you to feed them at night or comfort him. This is particularly useful when you are recovering from a C section. For instance the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to an elevation of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm, and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.
You should also consider how low you would like the base of your crib to be. While some mothers find it easier to get their babies out of standard Moses baskets at the smallest height, others prefer an elevated base to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular choice, with one of our mum test subjects saying that it has an easy-to-use collapsible side that you can press down at the touch of the button.
Keep in mind that a bedside or bassinet should not be used until your baby can hold their head without assistance typically approximately 6 months. This is because of the risk of inhaling suffocation. It is also important to remember that if you select a bassinet/bedside sleeper that can be converted into a cot and vice versa, you must begin removing the sides once your child is able to do this to ensure that they don't climb out or fall out of bed.
Design
There are a variety of cribs for beds, ranging from simple to extravagant. Some of the most extravagant options include features like an inbuilt light or a center of calm which plays music and sounds and has two levels that help to soothe your baby back to sleep, or the swivelling footrest, which makes it easier for you to reach your child to feed them. There are also models which can be made into the form of a toddler bed or cot bed (or both) ideal for when your child is ready to transition to a bigger bed.
For instance the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air which was awarded Bronze in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Crib, Best Cot or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that lets you pick up your newborn and move them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get up. This makes it ideal for mothers who are recovering from Caesarean births or who require the bed for extended durations of time. Jasmine is an MFM mum who tested this product at home, said that it was simple to use and made it easier for her to reach her baby - especially after having a c-section.
Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the category of Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket and comes with an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline and rocking function. It's bigger than other cribs for bed that we tested, but it folds into its travel bag to make it relatively compact when it's not in use.
MFM mom home test Leya also appreciated the function of this bedside crib describing how it was designed with the needs of parents and children in mind. It has a great design that is extremely simple to operate and is extremely durable. She also said that the bassinet's pivoting base was brilliant because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to facilitate access for mothers who are recovering from C-sections.
Safety
The bedside cot's primary safety characteristic is the fact that it can easily be adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their baby to feed, comfort or change his or her diaper. This makes it perfect for mothers who are recovering from a C-section. You should choose a design which allows you to lower the bed's side with a single button press. This will allow you to raise your child without having to get out of bed. This is crucial, particularly as your child grows and becomes more mobile. You should also not add anything to the crib that increases the risk of suffocation or injury, such as pillows and duvets. These could cause babies to become overheated.
The NPR released by the CPSC NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product issues, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) Fabric-side enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing components (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example the products would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the rail that is lowered. However, bedside crib that turns into cot concluded that such requirements would not be practical or effective in reducing the number of incidents where infants were trapped between the bedside sleeper and an adult bed.
A majority of the incidents mentioned in the NPR included multi-use bedside beds which can be converted to other types of equipment, like play yards or bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC add an alternative option to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers with multiple uses which would permit them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using a removable attachment. The attachment can be permanently attached or removed when the product is not being used as a baby bassinet.
The CPSC is examining these and other comments that were received in response to its NPR regarding bedside sleepers. The Commission will be examining these comments when deciding on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
