Nutraceuticals substances have an essential role in the development of the animals' normal physiological functions and in protecting them against infectious diseases. In this review, the uses of amino acids, vitamins and minerals as well as their mode of action in growth promotion and elevation of immune system are discussed.Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elastomer is now a well-known material for packaging implantable biomedical micro-devices owing to unique bulk properties such as biocompatibility, low toxicity, excellent rheological properties, good flexibility, and mechanical stability. Despite the desirable bulk characteristics, PDMS is generally regarded as a high-flux material for oxygen and water vapor to penetrate compared with other polymeric barrier materials, which is related to the defect-induced penetration through the packaging coating prepared by the traditional deposition techniques. Besides, its hydrophobic nature causes serious fouling problems and limits the practical application of PDMS-based devices. In this work, the performance of silicone thin films as a packaging layer was improved by the fabrication of the roller-casted multiple thin layers to minimize a defect-induced failure. To confer hydrophilicity and cell fouling resistance, high-density and well-defined poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (POEGMA) brushes were tethered via the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) technique on the roller-casted multiple thin PDMS layers. The characteristics of fabricated substrates were determined by static water contact angle measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In vitro cell behavior of POEGMA-grafted PDMS substrates was evaluated to examine cell-fouling resistance.Objectives Our goal is to illuminate cannabis use among persons with dementia (PwD) and their informal caregivers relative to the use of evidence-based as well as other complementary and alternative care practices. Methods We analyzed focus group (FG) narratives provided by 26 caregivers of PwD and identified five themes concerning the provision of cannabis to PwD and caregivers' self-use. Results Three of the 26 caregivers provided PwD cannabis and also used themselves, another 3 of the 26 used themselves only, and all but two of the remaining FG participants indicated they would consider providing cannabis to PwD or using for themselves. These caregivers expressed a desire to obtain more empirically-based information about cannabis and to discuss options with their clinical care providers. Conclusions A small but significant proportion of caregivers are providing cannabis to PwD as a possible treatment for agitation, sleep disturbances and other problematic secondary symptoms and using for themselves as way to relieve stress. Many other caregivers may start using cannabis upon receiving information and guidance from a credible source. Clinical Implications Notwithstanding the need for more research, clinical gerontologists and other dementia care specialists are being looked upon to provide information and guidance about the benefits and harms of cannabis use among PwD and their caregivers.Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) does not only affect the respiratory system but appears to be a systemic disease. Most studies in this field have been carried out in the laboratory, while few data have been collected under actual working conditions. This study aims to characterize the forces exerted during non-powered hospital bed maneuvering. Twenty participants were required to move a bed (equipped with a customized handlebar to measure exerted forces) along an actual hospital path including straight, turn and maneuver phases. The results show that higher forces are associated with the initial phase (peak and mean values 222 and 68 N) while the straight, turn and maneuvering phases required similar (lower) efforts.
