Acute foetal distress (AFD) is a life-threatening foetal condition complicating 2% of all pregnancies and accounting for 8.9% of caesarean sections (CS) especially in developing nations. Despite the severity of the problem, no evidence exists as to the safest anaesthetic technique for the mother and foetus couple undergoing CS for AFD. We aimed to compare general anaesthesia (GA) versus regional (spinal and epidural) anaesthesia in terms of their perioperative maternal and foetal outcomes.
We carried out a retrospective cohort study by reviewing the medical records of all women who underwent CS indicated for AFD between 2015 to 2018 at the Douala General Hospital, Cameroon. Medical records of neonates were also reviewed. We sought to investigate the association between GA, and regional anaesthesia administered during CS for AFD and foetal and maternal outcomes. The threshold of statistical significance was set at 0.05.
We enrolled the medical records of 117 pregnant women who underwent CS indicated for study infers an association between CS performed for AFD under GA and foetal morbidity. This, however, failed to translate into a difference in perinatal mortality when comparing GA vs RA. This finding does not discount the role of GA, but we emphasize the need for specific precautions like adequate anticipation for neonatal resuscitation to reduce neonatal complications associated with CS performed for AFD under GA.
Thinopyrum intermedium (2n = 6x = 42) is an important wild perennial Triticeae species exhibiting many potentially favorable traits for wheat improvement. Wheat-Th. intermedium partial amphiploids serve as a bridge to transfer desirable genes from Th. intermedium into common wheat.
Three octoploid Trititrigia accessions (TE261-1, TE266-1, and TE346-1) with good resistances to stripe rust, powdery mildew and aphids were selected from hybrid progenies between Th. intermedium and the common wheat variety 'Yannong 15' (YN15). Genomic in situ hybridization (GISH), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and multicolor GISH (McGISH) analyses demonstrated that the three octoploid Trititrigia possess 42 wheat chromosomes and 14 Th. intermedium chromosomes. The 14 alien (Th. intermedium) chromosomes belong to a mixed genome consisting of J-, J
- and St-genome chromosomes rather than a single J, J
or St genome. Different types of chromosomal structural variation were also detected in the 1A, 6A, 6B, 2D and 7D chromosomes via FISH, McGISH and molecular marker analysis. Paclitaxel in vivo The identity of the alien chromosomes and the variationes in the wheat chromosomes in the three Trititrigia octoploids were also different.
The wheat-Th. intermedium partial amphiploids possess 14 alien chromosomes which belong to a mixed genome consisting of J-, J
- and St- chromosomes, and 42 wheat chromosomes with different structural variations. These accessions could be used as genetic resources in wheat breeding for the transfer of disease and pest resistance genes from Th. intermedium to common wheat.

Heat tolerance is becoming increasingly important where maize is grown under spring season in India which coincide with grain filling stage of crop resulting in tassel blast, reduced pollen viability, pollination failure and barren ears that causes devastating yield losses. So, there is need to identify the genomic regions associated with heat tolerance component traits which could be further employed in maize breeding program.
An association mapping panel, consisting of 662 doubled haploid (DH) lines, was evaluated for yield contributing traits under normal and natural heat stress conditions. Genome wide association studies (GWAS) carried out using 187,000 SNPs and 130 SNPs significantly associated for grain yield (GY), days to 50% anthesis (AD), days to 50% silking (SD), anthesis-silking interval (ASI), plant height (PH), ear height (EH) and ear position (EPO) were identified under normal conditions. A total of 46 SNPs strongly associated with GY, ASI, EH and EPO were detected under heat stress conditio stress tolerance. The genomic regions detected in the present study need further validation before being applied in the breeding pipelines.
The present study identified significant SNPs and haplotype blocks associated with yield contributing traits that help in selection of donor lines with favorable alleles for multiple traits. These results provided insights of genetics of heat stress tolerance. The genomic regions detected in the present study need further validation before being applied in the breeding pipelines.
Coeliac disease (CD) is characterised by diverse clinical symptoms, which may cause diagnostic problems and reduce the patients' quality of life. A study conducted in the United Kingdom (UK) revealed that the mean time between the onset of coeliac symptoms and being diagnosed was above 13years. This study aimed to analyse the diagnostic process of CD in Poland and evaluate the quality of life of patients before and after CD diagnosis. In addition, results were compared to the results of the original study conducted in the UK.
The study included 2500 members of the Polish Coeliac Society. The patients were asked to complete a questionnaire containing questions on socio-demographic factors, clinical aspects and quality of life, using the EQ-5D questionnaire. Questionnaires received from 796 respondents were included in the final analysis.
The most common symptoms reported by respondents were bloating (75%), abdominal pain (72%), chronic fatigue (63%) and anaemia (58%). Anaemia was the most persistent sympgroups.
Duration of symptoms prior to the diagnosis of CD in Poland, although shorter than in the UK, was long with an average of 7.3 years from first CD symptoms. Faster CD diagnosis after the onset of symptoms in Polish respondents may be related to a higher percentage of children in the Polish sample. Introduction of a gluten-free diet improves coeliac patients' quality of life. These results suggest that doctors should be made more aware of CD and its symptoms across all age groups.
