It was therefore concluded that diversity of food intake among the farmers was low. Ageing, education and large household size among others, were also identified as major problem among the rural farmers. It was however recommended that considerable investment in human capital should be encouraged since food diversity and nutrition education enhances households' food intake and health status.Recently, the prevention of cardiovascular events has become one of the most important aims of diabetes care. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) agonists have been reported to have vascular protective effects. Here, we examined whether pemafibrate, a selective PPAR alpha agonist, attenuated neointima formation after vascular injury and vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation. We performed endothelial denudation injury in mice treated with a high-fat diet (HFD) or normal chow. Orally administered pemafibrate significantly attenuated neointima formation after vascular injury in HFD and normal chow mice. Interestingly, pemafibrate increased the serum fibroblast growth factor 21 concentration and decreased serum insulin concentrations in HFD mice. In addition, body weight was slightly but significantly decreased by pemafibrate in HFD mice. Pemafibrate, but not bezafibrate, attenuated VSMC proliferation in vitro. The knockdown of PPAR alpha abolished the anti-VSMC proliferation effect of pemafibrate. BrdU assay results revealed that pemafibrate dose-dependently inhibited DNA synthesis in VSMCs. Flow cytometry analysis demonstrated that G1-to-S phase cell cycle transition was significantly inhibited by pemafibrate. Pemafibrate attenuated serum-induced cyclin D1 expression in VSMCs. However, apoptosis was not induced by pemafibrate as assessed by the TUNEL assay. Similar to the in vitro data, VSMC proliferation was also decreased by pemafibrate in mice. These data suggest that pemafibrate attenuates neointima formation after vascular injury and VSMC proliferation by inhibiting cell cycle progression.
The devastating Syrian crisis has raised concern regarding the social acceptance of smoking especially with water pipe use becoming a growing epidemic. We aim to determine the prevalence of cigarette and water pipe smoking among university students, along with identifying the addictive behavior among university students.
A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Syrian Private University during World No-Tobacco Day, in Damascus, Syria during the war crisis. The survey consists of 4 sections socio-demographic information, Fagerström Test of Nicotine Dependence, attitude towards water pipes, and perspective about smoking. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Sciences version 25.0 (SPSS Inc., United States.).
Of the 622 participants, 429 (69%) were males with a mean age of 21.3 ± 3.1 years. The prevalence of tobacco smoking was 320 (51.4%), 208 (23.8%) for cigarettes, and 112 (18.0%) for water pipe. Smoking was significantly higher among male non-medical university students. The majority were low to moderate dependent when assessed by the Fagerström Test of Nicotine Dependence.
This study showed a very high prevalence of smoking indicating the need for smoking cessation programs, access to effective quitting treatments, and mass media campaigns to diminish smoking among the youth.

The objective of this study was to elucidate the inhibitory activity of anthocyanin-rich fraction from Thai berries against fat digestive enzymes. The ability of Thai berries to bind bile acid, disrupt cholesterol micellization and the cholesterol uptake into Caco-2 cells was also determined. The content of total phenolics, flavonoid and anthocyanin in Prunus domestica L. (TPE), Antidesma bunius (L.) Spreng, Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels, and Syzygium nervosum A. Cunn. Ex DC was 222.7-283.5 mg gallic acid equivalents, 91.2-184.3 mg catechin equivalents, and 37.9-49.5 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside equivalents/g extract, respectively. The anthocyanin-rich fraction of all extracts inhibited pancreatic lipase and cholesterol esterase with the IC50 values of 90.6-181.7 μg/mL and 288.7-455.0 μg/mL, respectively. Additionally, all extracts could bind primary and secondary bile acids (16.4-36.6%) and reduce the solubility of cholesterol in artificial micelles (53.0-67.6%). click here Interestingly, TPE was the most potent extract on interfering the key steps of lipid digestion among the tested extracts. In addition, TPE (0.10-0.50 mg/mL) significantly reduced the cholesterol uptake into Caco-2 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. These results demonstrate a new insight into the role of anthocyanin-rich Thai berry extract on interfering the key steps of lipid digestion and absorption.Propolis and honey produced by stingless bees are regarded as high economic value products due to their bioactive components, which are significantly influenced by conditions at the cultivation location. This study investigated the effect of cultivation location on the amount and quality of propolis and honey produced by Tetragonula laeviceps cultivated in Modular Tetragonula Hives. Fifteen bee colonies were cultivated for at least three months in coffee plantations at two different locations, namely Cibodas and Cileunyi Wetan, Indonesia. The propolis was harvested from the hives and then evaluated to compare product quality from each location. The average production of propolis in both locations was found to lie in the range of 4.26-4.54 g/colony/month with a flavonoid content of 11.4-14.8 mg/g qE. Meanwhile, the average production of honey in both locations after eight months of cultivation was found to lie in the range of 0.93-1.44 g/colony/month. The vitamin C content of the honey obtained from both locations was 17.2-69.5 mg/100 g with an IC50 of 1188-1341 mg/L, in terms of its ability to inhibit the free radical 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl. This study shows that cultivation of stingless bees on a coffee plantation in the studied locations has the potential to provide sustainable production of propolis and honey from T. laeviceps.
