Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw
The blue-and gold macaw is a stunning bird that is known for its stunning visual appeal. Its sociable personality makes it a wonderful companion for families. It also excels at interaction and can pick up the language and tricks quickly.
Our personal blue-and-gold macaw, Pteri, can say hello to apple, water and more. These birds can live over 50 years in the wild.
Lolita's Personality
Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds are best suited to families with a variety of members. They can easily become bored and will discover ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't engaged with them often enough. Macaws who aren't properly socialized may become aggressive and may even bite. It is crucial to establish clear boundaries to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are lively birds that love to play, climb and interact. They require 2 to 3 hours each day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, listening to music and learning new tricks. They also enjoy going to parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a fun pet, they also make loving companions for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their affection for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to those who live nearby. They can be heard making high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be disruptive in apartments and condos or in close proximity to children who may be frightened by their roar.
Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, meaning males and females are difficult to distinguish. Due to this the only way to reliably identify sex is through DNA testing. Once the birds' sex is established and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to learn commands and phrases. It is a lengthy process and the pet's owner must be patient and recognize that this is a challenging task. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process, and correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to go back to the sea.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They are a danger to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, promised to develop an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet
A balanced diet is essential for the health of a gold and blue macaw. These beautiful birds require premium food and lots of fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. A macaw that is well-fed in captivity can live up to 60 years old. This magnificent bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.
A blue and gold macaw is a charming pet who is also very intelligent. They are well-known for their ability to learn new tricks and vocabulary quickly. This bird is a great option for those who are just beginning their journey into avian companionship.
This bird is also very social and easily bonds with her family members. chestnut fronted macaw of gold and blue often make loud vocalizations that include "flock calls," which is part of their natural behavior. They might even be able to chew and squabble, especially when they are bored or frustrated. It is essential for prospective pet owners to keep in mind that this kind of behavior is normal and must be expected.
Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on Lolita's status and health, but there are still questions. Akromas and others who have supervised or trained Lolita's health at some point are concerned about her diet. According to the most recent update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds of salmon per day, along with herring, capelin and squid.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they offer their killer whales, particularly Lolita. The orca, who was 57 years old, was taken away from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. Although the species is in danger and is in a tank which some consider to be too small.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, however her health is declining. She's been a source of concern for animal welfare organizations who wish to see her released to the wild. Lolita is a resident at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970 was a popular tourist attraction there for decades. She has been fighting persistent illnesses and an infection that left her in a fragile condition.
The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present state of health. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. They show that she is aging rapidly and that her health is deteriorating.
It is unclear what specific health issues are plaguing the orca, as her captor isn't obliged to disclose the information. However, a repository of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the deaths of orcas in captivity.
Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has stated his commitment to transfer the whale from her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she could swim deep in the ocean and perhaps even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal issue.
