Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) has been reported in rodents treated with nanoparticles (NPs). However, little is known about the type of NPs producing PAP and their toxicity mechanisms. Here, we assembled seven PAP-inducing NPs and TiO2 NPs as a negative control. At 1 and 6 months after a single intratracheal instillation in rats, pulmonary inflammation and the gene expression of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters and related genes were evaluated in separated alveolar macrophages (AMs). One month after intratracheal instillation, seven NPs (Eu2O3, In2O3, Pr6O11, Sm2O3, Tb4O7, and NiO) caused PAP, but only In2O3 NPs caused persistent PAP at 6 months after treatment. The levels of phospholipids, indicators of PAP, showed good correlations with the gene expression profile of five transporters (ABCA1, ABCB4, ABCB8, ABCG1, and ABCG4), which effluxing phospholipids in AMs. Among them, ABCG1 and ABCG4 might be key transporters involved in PAP development because both showed a negative correlation with the magnitude of PAP, while others might be compensatory transporters for PAP recovery, as they showed a positive correlation. In conclusion, the identification of seven PAP-producing NPs implies that PAP may be an emerging occupational disease and that ABCG1 and ABCG4 may be therapeutic targets for PAP.
Ulcerative colitis is a subtype of inflammatory bowel disease, characterized by relapsing inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract with limited treatment options. Previous studies suggested that the natural compound tricin, a flavone isolated from rice bran, could suppress chemically-induced colitis in mice, while our recent study also demonstrated the anti-metastatic effect of tricin in colon tumor-bearing mice.

Here we further investigated the underlying mechanism of the inhibitory effects of tricin on lipopolysaccharides-activated macrophage RAW264.7 cells and explored the efficacy of tricin in acute colitis mouse model induced by 4.5% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) for 7 days.

Tricin (75, 100, and 150 mg/kg) or the positive control drug sulfasalazine (200 mg/kg) were orally administered to mice for 7 days. Stool consistency scores, stool blood scores, and body weight were recorded daily. Disease activity index (DAI) was examined on day 7, and colon tissues were collected for biochemical analyses. In study 1, participants received two novel or common examples in the early or late stage of the realistic presented problem task. Results revealed higher fluency and flexibility in the late stage than that in the early stage. In study 2, participants solved alternative uses task (AUT) and received examples as in study 1. Results replicated beneficial effects of timing and quality on DT in study 1. The special variable selection procedure, based on the pure spectra of all components, makes it possible to develop a model that is insensitive to small variations of the capsule shell. The shrinkage of spectral region can greatly affect the results of the classification. Consequently, in case we are interested in the whole remedy, capsules with deviations in shell properties should be rejected as the substandard ones. If we are only interested in the quality of capsules' content, the developed model is effective and applicable in the routine testing. With the increasing population in coastal urban cities, more land-based pollutants are transported to the coastal water and adversely affected the tropical ecosystems. This paper provides an overview of anthropogenic pollutant studies in Indonesian coastal water and ecosystems from 1986 to 2021. Nutrients, heavy metals, organic pollutants, and plastic debris are the most-studied contaminants. We found that 82%, 54% and 50% of the studies exceeding nutrients, heavy metals, and organic pollutants standard limit, respectively; thus, indicating poor water quality status in part of Indonesian coastal water. The coral reef ecosystems is found to be the most sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance. The potential effect of climate change, new coastal pollution hotspots in eastern Indonesia, marine anthropogenic sources, legacy/emerging pollutants, and the need for research related to the biological contamination, are discussed for future opportunities.
