We report here an autopsy case of cardiac involvement of RDD presenting as fibrinous pericarditis. A 14-year-old Japanese boy complained of loss of appetite and breathing difficulty when lying down. He was found dead on his back in his bedroom. One year before his death, he was diagnosed with RDD after skin biopsy. At autopsy, the deceased was 153 cm in height and weighed 38 kg with systemic edema. He had flat pigmented light-brown spots, as well as many pale reddish-brown papules on the abdomen and both thighs. Cervical and mediastinal lymphadenopathy was observed. A large amount of pleural and ascitic fluid was observed. The spleen weighed 381.9 g and showed splenomegaly. The heart weighed 620 g and showed acute fibrinous pericarditis with adhesion. Abundant fibrin was observed on the epicardial surface. The infiltrating cells were CD68-positive, S100-positive, and CD1a-negative histiocytes. The skin and spleen showed histiocytic involvement. Systemic edema, large amounts of pleural and ascitic fluid, a high brain natriuretic peptide level in blood, and hemosiderin-laden macrophages in the lungs suggested chronic heart failure. We speculate that the cause of death was extranodal cardiac involvement of RDD with chronic heart failure. This case highlights the need for forensic pathologists to perform a complete autopsy to determine the cause of sudden death when cardiac involvement of RDD is present. In recent years, it has become a new research direction to post-mortem interval (PMI) estimation from the changes in metabolite content generated during the process of cadaver corruption, and lead to more and more attention has been paid to the biochemical changes of muscles after death. The ATP degradation process has long been accepted as a precise manner to estimate freshness of meat products in food science. ATP-related metabolites may also serve as an indicator for PMI estimation of corpses. The purpose of this study was to test this possibility. Firstly, this study optimized the detection method of ATP-related metabolites in skeletal muscles of rat. Moreover, in animal experiment, ATP-related metabolites (ATP, ADP, AMP, IMP, Ino, Hx) in lower hind limb skeletal muscles of sixty rats were measured by RP-HPLC at different PMI for 168 h at 20 °C ± 1 °C, the change of freshness indicators (K value, K1 value, K0 value, H value, P value, G value, IMP ratio) were carefully analyzed, and investigate the relationship between them and PMI. The overall results showed that IMP, AMP, Hx, Total metabolites, K value, K1 value, K0 value, H value, P value, G value, and IMP ratio in skeletal muscles changed significantly with PMI (R2 = 0.864-0.971, all P less then 0.01) while ATP, ADP, Ino, IMP precursors and IMP degradants had minor changes during the same period (R2 = 0.171-0.706). Specifically, significant linear positive correlations between H value of skeletal muscles and PMI were found, and the coefficients of their regression functions were R2 = 0.971. The correlation between AMP and PMI was slightly lower (R2 = 0.864), but the scope of PMI estimation was the widest (168 h). It can be concluded that the determination of ATP-related metabolites in skeletal muscle may be a potential tool in the PMI estimation. However, more researches on its influencing factors are needed to facilitate its final use in practice.A total of 20 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) loci from 2220 unrelated healthy individuals of Han population living in the central area of Yunnan province, Southwest China were amplified with the PowerPlex® 21 System. After Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium examination, the allele frequencies and forensic statistical parameters of 20 STR loci were evaluated. A total of 298 alleles and 1225 genotypes were observed for all the 20 loci. The allele frequencies varied from 0.0002 to 0.5130. The combined power of discrimination and the combined probability of exclusion of all 20 STR loci were 0.99999999521565 and 0.999999999999999999999999637, respectively. Meanwhile, genetic distances between Central Yunnan Han and 17 previously published populations were compared and a neighbor-joining (NJ) phylogenetic tree was developed and visualized by using MEGA 7 based on Nei's standard genetic distance. The results demonstrated that these loci were highly polymorphic in the Han nationality in Central Yunnan, Southwest China and could be applied in forensic medicine and population genetics.Tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) are the sole surviving members of the order Rhynchocephalia and offer insight into the evolution of basal amniotes. Recent work sequencing the genome of tuatara revealed characteristics that emphasize the uniqueness of this species, many of which are linked to their thermal ecology. Genes related to their extremely low optimal body temperature and unique form of temperature-dependent sex determination were identified. Further, sequencing highlights the uniqueness of the heavily debated species of North Brother Island tuatara. These results not only inform our understanding of amniote evolution, but also serve as vital background for new and creative research.Amphinomid fireworms are notorious for their stinging dorsal bristles (notochaetae), but it is still unclear whether the irritation they cause is merely mechanical or if the notochaetae contain toxins. Furthermore, although fireworm chaetae have always been described as calcareous, their composition has never been investigated to date and strong debates are ongoing on their internal structure. Unravelling the native ultrastructure and composition of fireworm chaetae is the first crucial step to assess whether the hypothesis of toxin vehiculation could be fully considered. We examined for the first time the chemical and mineralogical composition, the ultrastructure and the external structure of the dorsal and ventral chaetae of the large species Hermodice carunculata. All the measurements were carried out on samples prepared without the use of chemical reagents, except for those targeted to investigate if decalcification altered the ultrastructure of the chaetae. A crystal-chemical strategy, combining chemical, diffraction and thermal analyses clearly showed the occurrence of crystalline calcium carbonate and clusters of phosphatic amorphous material.
