In the current study, we propose an integrative approach, which will incorporate elements from the social learning and self-control theories of delinquency and crime to examine violence in an understudied, marginalized, and often discriminated subpopulation group-American Indian youth. ER stress inhibitor The analysis is based on survey data collected between 2009 and 2013 from a sample of American Indian adolescents (N = 3,380) enrolled in 27 school districts located in five regions of the United States (Northern Plains, Southwest, Upper Great Lakes, Southeast/Texas, and the Northeast). The main objective of the analysis is to identify the factors more likely to predict violent offending among American Indian adolescents, a vulnerable group that has an elevated risk of violent victimization. Results of the Tobit regression analysis indicate that in both gender groups a low level of self-control, association with delinquent friends, poor school performance, and underage alcohol consumption significantly predict violence perpetration. Nonetheless, experience with direct violent victimization has the largest effect on male and female adolescents' violent behavior. Although living with both biological parents and childhood exposure to domestic violence do not influence significantly the adolescents' aggressive behavior, parental monitoring does have a significant violence-deterrent effect in both gender groups. Findings suggest that more opportunities should be created for indigenous communities to control their education systems and ensure American Indian students achieve academic success, which is one of the violence protective factors identified in this study. Moreover, measures meant to prevent youth violence in American Indian communities should also focus on parents/caregivers who, directly and indirectly, have the capacity to reduce the adolescents' risk of becoming victims and/or perpetrators of violence.Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a malignant tumor that not only negatively affects the physical and mental health but also the quality of life of the patients. Growth arrest-specific transcript 5 (GAS5) is a common long-chain non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that has been reported to participate in the development of various cancers. However, the biological functions of lncRNA GAS5 in the occurrence and development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma are elusive. The expression of lncRNA GAS5 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma and normal samples were analyzed. Bioinformatic tool was utilized to predict the potential function of lncRNA in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Transplanted mice were used for in vivo experiments. We observed that the expression of lncRNA GAS5 was upregulated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissues and cells. Down-regulation of lncRNA GAS5 inhibited the proliferation and promoted apoptosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells. The expression of miR-4465 was down regulated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissues and cells. LncRNA GAS5 could directly bind to miR-4465 and regulated the expression of miR-4465. It was further confirmed that miR-4465 could directly bind with COX2 and inhibit the expression of COX2. Down-regulation of lncRNA GAS5 suppressed tumor growth, promoted the expression levels of miR-18a-5p and suppressed the expression of COX2 in vivo. LncRNA GAS5 regulated nasopharyngeal carcinoma malignancy through targeting miR-4465 and modulating COX2. The GAS5/miR-4465/COX2 axis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma pathogenesis was confirmed, which would provide a new therapeutic target for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. This study evaluated the effects of endoplasmic reticulum autophagy (ER-phagy) and globular adiponectin (gAPN) on chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH)-induced H9C2 cardiomyocytes injury while investigating potential mechanisms of action. The CIH model of H9C2 cardiomyocytes was established in this study. CCK-8 assay was used to determine cell viability post-exposure to various CIH times and gAPN concentrations. Flow cytometry was used to observe H9C2 cardiomyocytes apoptosis and immunofluorescence was used to measure ER-phagy and SEC62 activation. Western blot was used to observe ER stress and AMPK pathway. Results indicated that ER stress was activated in H9C2 cardiomyocytes exposed to CIH. Inhibition of ER stress reduced CIH-induced cell apoptosis. gAPN attenuated CIH-induced ER stress and H9C2 cardiomyocytes apoptosis. ER-phagy and SEC62 protein level were induced by CIH, while gAPN highly enhanced these changes. Inhibition of SEC62 expression reduced ER-phagy and increased ER stress and H9C2 cardiomyocytes apoptosis. Moreover, gAPN induced AMPK expression. Inhibition of AMPK expression reduced SEC62-mediated ER-phagy and increased the H9C2 cardiomyocytes apoptosis. Altogether, our study suggested that gAPN upregulated SEC62-mediated ER-phagy to extenuate ER stress, and mitigated H9C2 cardiomyocytes apoptosis induced by CIH through AMPK activation.Although there exists a growing body of research on female same-sex intimate partner violence (FSSIPV) as well as bidirectional intimate partner violence (BIPV) among lesbian women, much of this literature focuses on the IPV experience of women living in Western societies such as the United States. The current study represents the very first to explore BIPV among lesbian women in China. In this study, we analyze a survey sample of 225 self-identified lesbian women in China to examine FSSBIPV patterns, pattern-specific rates, and risk factors of FSSBIPV. Using the Latent Class Analysis technique, we discover three main patterns of partner abuse, including bidirectional psychological violence (60%), bidirectional violence multiple types with physical abuse (79.1%), and minimal violence (20.9%). Logistic regressions show that there is no significant demographic, socioeconomic, or attitudinal difference between the bidirectional psychological violence group and the minimal violence group while being younger, cohabitating, and holding pro-IPV attitudes significantly predicted higher odds of experiencing multiple types of bidirectional violence. Contributions to the literature, as well as policy implications, are also discussed.
