Measuring conditional dependence is an important topic in econometrics with broad applications including graphical models. Under a factor model setting, a new conditional dependence measure based on projection is proposed. In humans there are 20 isoforms that are differentially expressed across tissues that serve multiple important biological roles. Using random peptide substrates, isoform specific amino acid preferences have been obtained in the form of enhancement values (EV). These EVs alone have previously been used to predict O-glycosylation sites via the web based ISOGlyP (Isoform Specific O-Glycosylation Prediction) tool. Here we explore additional protein features to determine whether these can complement the random peptide derived enhancement values and increase the predictive power of ISOGlyP. The inclusion of additional protein substrate features (such as secondary structure and surface accessibility) was found to increase sensitivity with minimal loss of specificity, when tested with three different published in vivo O-glycoproteomics data sets, thus increasing the overall accuracy of the ISOGlyP predictions.A comprehensive analysis of the turbulence structure of relatively deep midlatitude katabatic flows (with jet maxima between 20 and 50 m) developing over a gentle (1°) mesoscale slope with a long fetch upstream of the Meteor Crater in Arizona is presented. The turbulence structure of flow below the katabatic jet maximum shows many similarities with the turbulence structure of shallower katabatic flows, with decreasing turbulence fluxes with height and almost constant turbulent Prandtl number. Still stark differences occur above the jet maximum where turbulence is suppressed by strong stability, is anisotropic and there is a large sub-mesoscale contribution to the flux. Detecting the stable boundary-layer top depends on the method used (flux- vs. anisotropy-profiles) but both methods are highly correlated. The top of the stable boundary layer, however, mostly deviates from the jet maximum height or the top of the near-surface inversion. Current GNSS-RO observations rely on open-loop (OL) processing of the signals, especially for signals propagating through the lower troposphere. The reason is that GNSS signals at low elevations are adversely affected by multipath effects due to propagation through lower troposphere structures and reflections and scattering from the Earth surface. The low-elevation RO signals are characterized by deep and fast amplitude fading and rapid signal carrier phase fluctuations, collectively referred to as signal scintillation. The conventional phase-lock loop (PLL) may lose lock of these signals. While OL tracking is known for its robustness, its accuracy is determined by the climatological models used to create the reference for the GNSS signal carrier tracking loop. The wide bandwidth typically associated with OL tracking also introduces large errors in signal parameters estimations. In this paper, we present an adaptive Kalman filter-based closed-loop (KFC) tracking method, which takes into consideration the tropospheric scintillation, platform vibration, and real-time C/N0 estimation of the RO signals. The KFC method has comparable robustness with and improved accuracy over the OL tracking, which are demonstrated through comparison using real GPS RO data collected on an airborne platform. Analysis of the excess Doppler estimation, retrieved bending angles and impact parameters also confirms the improved performances of the proposed algorithm over OL tracking.This paper analyzes the effects of permanently unbalanced sex ratios in Germany caused by World War II on fertility outcomes over the life cycle. Using Census records linked with individual biography data, our analysis confirms the commonly found short-term pattern of decreased fertility rates due to a stark imbalance of the sex ratio. Yet, the long-term effects of such an imbalance crucially depend on when in the life cycle fertility is evaluated. We find that female cohorts with low sex ratios have fewer children at younger ages and a larger fraction remains childless. While childlessness remains higher throughout their life cycle, mothers from affected cohorts catch up and even overcompensate at later ages with respect to the number of children. Our preferred reading of this result is that with low sex ratios women select themselves into late motherhood according to their fertility preferences. This interpretation is consistent with the finding that women from affected cohorts expand their childbearing period and accept lower quality matches in the marriage market.
