01). We also observed a statistically significant decrease in the number of apoptotic cells observed in the CA 16% + ATS co-treatment compared with ATS treatment (
< 0.01). Treatment with CA alone also had no influence on either type of cell death.
Our results demonstrated that ATS is cytotoxic in the assessed conditions. However, such cytotoxicity was attenuated when the cells were treated simultaneously with ATS and CA.

The use of homeopathy in oncological supportive care seems to be progressing. Senaparib solubility dmso The first French prevalence study, performed in 2005 in Strasbourg, showed that only 17% of the subjects were using it. What is the situation 12 years later?
This is a descriptive study, using a questionnaire identical to that used in 2005, on 633 patients undergoing treatment in three anti-cancer centers in Strasbourg. The results of the "homeopathy" sub-group were extracted and studied.
Of the 535 patients included, 164 used homeopathy that is 30.7%. The main purpose of its use was to reduce the side effects of cancer treatments (75%). Among the users, 82.6% were "somewhat" or "very" satisfied, against "quite" satisfied for 15.5%, and "not at all" satisfied for 1.9%. The homeopathic treatment was prescribed by a doctor in 75.6% of the cases; the general practitioner was kept informed in 87% of the cases and the oncologist in 82%. Fatigue, pain, nausea, anxiety, sadness and diarrhea were improved in 80% of the cases. However, alopecia, weight disorders and loss of libido were the least improved symptoms. The use of homeopathy was significantly associated with the female sex.
With a prevalence of 30.7%, homeopathy is the most used complementary medicine in integrative oncology in Strasbourg. Over 12 years, we have witnessed an increase of 83% in its use in the same city. Almost all respondents declare themselves satisfied and tell their doctors more readily than in 2005.

Almost all respondents declare themselves satisfied and tell their doctors more readily than in 2005.The recent questions about homeopathy raised by some sceptics have focused an awareness on this therapy and led different protagonists among the scientific community to seek a much-needed re-assessment. The inputs coming from external but benevolent experts will broaden the knowledge and the consciousness of the whole medical community, and more widely of the public, about the meaning and the value of homeopathy.Looking at this from the point of view of the human sciences gives a perspective on the universality of the philosophy that underlies homeopathic thinking, which is particularly visible in the methodological similarities between homeopathic provings and sociological or anthropological observations. It also explains how this view of health and care coincides with the expectations of the public, who no longer want a limited mechanical approach to the human body or more generally to the environment.The input to homeopathy of the human sciences, with their methodological tools and approaches, and highlighting the possibilities offered by mixed-methods research, could enable these notions to be heard and shared in the wider scientific community.
The novel 180° cryoballoon (CbAS
) enables semicircumferential treatment over a length of 3 cm per application. This first-in-human study evaluates its feasibility, efficacy, and safety for the treatment of Barrett's esophagus (BE) neoplasia.
This multicenter study consisted of dose-finding and extension phases. Dose-finding started with the lowest dose possible (1.0 mm/s). For each dose, six patients were treated circumferentially over a 3-cm length. The dose was increased until the median BE regression was ≥ 60 % without serious adverse events (SAEs). In the extension phase, the dose was confirmed in 19 new patients. The outcomes were technical success, BE regression after one treatment, and SAEs.
25 patients (median Prague C0M3) were included (6 dose-finding/19 extension). In two patients, the CbAS
could not be applied because of unstable balloon positioning. The technical success rate was 96 % (22 /23). In the six dose-finding patients, the starting dose resulted in median BE regression of 94 % (95 % confidence interval [CI] 60 %-97 %) without SAEs and was thus considered effective. Overall median BE regression was 80 % (95 %CI 60 %-90 %).
Single-session CbAS
seems feasible, safe, and effective, and is a promising technique for the treatment of patients with BE neoplasia.

In valvular open-heart surgery, data regarding the effect of a moderate dose of tranexamic acid (TXA) on clinical outcomes are limited.
Out of a cohort of 13,293 patients, we performed a propensity-score-matched analysis in 6,106 patients and assessed the risk of convulsive seizures (CS, primary endpoint), stroke, renal replacement therapy, and mortality (secondary endpoints). In the entire study cohort of 13,293 patients, we also assessed the multivariable-adjusted association of CS with postoperative outcomes.
The risk of CS was significantly higher in the TXA group (2.4%;
= 72) than in the non-TXA group (1.0%;
= 32), with a relative risk ratio (RR) of 2.28 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.50-3.47;
< 0.001). The risk of CS was also higher in patients receiving TXA doses ≥25 mg/kg body weight (3.7%;
= 40) than in patients receiving <25 mg/kg body weight (1.6%;
= 32;
< 0.001). Perioperative secondary clinical endpoints and 1-year mortality did not differ significantly betweed mortality. However, in the small group of patients experiencing a seizure, the risks of stroke and short- and mid-term mortality were substantially higher than in patients not experiencing a seizure, indicating that the use of a low-dose TXA protocol ( less then 25 mg/kg body weight) should be considered.
