Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to allow parents to snuggle with their infant at night without the risk of SIDS. However they are not recommended for use up to 6 months, when your baby is required to be moved into a cot or a moses basket.
Mehack Mehack, an MFM home tester, was awed by the fact that this model has a bassinet that can be used all around the home. It also features a manual rocking feature. It was simple to put together and even came with a travel bag.
Size
Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. Cots can also be converted into toddler beds. However they are typically used for children up to the age of three. If you're considering a wooden cot, there are usually two sizes to choose from that are large and standard both of which can be converted into a cot/toddler bed. If you'd like your child (or children) to be comfortable sleeping in a bigger cot, it's an excellent idea to choose the larger size.
MFM mum home tester Jasmine loved that the bedside cot was slightly larger than a Moses basket but not too big for her baby's room. It's easy to carry her child in and out for night feeding or soothing and the quality is top-notch, compared with many she's seen that feel flimsy.
Emily who is a home-based tester, is thrilled by the flexibility of the Maxi-Cosi lora which is a portable, lift-off bassinet. It also rocks. It also comes with an incline for reflux and a machine washable liner that breathes. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. In contrast to International or European cot brands Lora is a cot that Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't need to purchase another mattress as your baby grows. It will require a specific bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the perfect mattress for your cot here.
Height
When you are choosing a cot for your bed be sure to choose one that can be raised to a height that is comfortable for feeding your baby. It should also be able of being dropped to the ground so that you can lift your baby towards you during night feedings or soothing. This is particularly useful in the event of recovering from a C section. The Next2me cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to a maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm, and the Knuma Hutch to 70cm.
Another thing to think about is how low you want the cot's base to be. Some mums find that it is easier to lift their babies from standard Moses baskets when the base is situated at the lowest level and others prefer a higher elevation to give them greater stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a well-liked option and one of our mom test subjects saying that it comes with a simple collapsible side that you can press down at the touch of the button.
Be aware that a bassinet/bedside sleeper is only suitable until your baby is able to hold their head up unaided, usually at approximately 6 months. This is because of the danger of suffocation. It is also important to be aware that when your child is old enough to be able to convert the bedside sleeper into a cot, you must take the sides off once they are ready to do this. This will prevent them from getting out or falling out of bed.
Design
There are a variety of styles of bedside crib, ranging from simple to lavish. The more expensive options could include features such as an integrated night light, a soothing centre which plays music and sounds and offers two levels of vibrations to help soothe your baby back to sleep, or the swivelling base which allows you to easily get your baby's food in the right place. There are also models which can be made into a cot bed or toddler bed (or both) ideal for when your child is ready to move to a bigger bed.
The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air For instance was awarded Bronze at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot Moses Basket or Crib category. It is a swivelling base that allows you to pick up your baby and transfer them to the opposite side of the crib without getting out of the bed. This is ideal for new mums recovering from Caesarean sections or who have to stay in bed for long periods of time. Jasmine is an MFM mother who tested the product at home, said it was easy to use and made it easier for her to reach her baby, especially after a c-section.
Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards as the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It has a machine-washable lining, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's a bit bigger than the other cribs that we've tested but it folds flat into its travel bag so it's quite compact when not in use.
Leya, MFM mum home tester, also acknowledged the crib's usefulness. She said it was designed to be used by parents and babies. 'It has an excellent design that is very simple to operate and is extremely durable. She also said that the bassinet's swivelling base was brilliant because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to make access easier, especially for new mums recovering from c-sections.
Safety
The most important security aspect of a large bedside cot is that it can be easily adjusted or moved to allow parents to reach their child when they require to feed them, soothe them, or change their nappies. This makes it ideal for new mothers recovering from a c-section. You should choose the design that lets you lower the side of the bed by pressing a button. This will allow you to lift your child without getting out of the bed. This is crucial, particularly when your baby grows and becomes more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the risk of suffocation or injury, such as pillowcases and duvets, which can cause your baby to become overheated.
The NPR released by the CPSC NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product like gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11 incidents) and consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).
In its NPR In its NPR, the CPSC considered the possibility of imposing additional requirements for bedside sleepers, like the requirement that these products meet the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at the very least, meet the maximum height requirement for the side rail. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements weren't feasible or effective in reducing number of instances in which infants are entrapped by a bedside rail and an adult bed.
The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that can be converted to other modes such as bassinets and play yards. Many commenters suggested that CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multi-use bedside sleepers that would enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets through the use of an attachment that can be connected permanently or disconnected when the item is not being used as a bassinet.
The CPSC is considering these and other comments that were received in response to its NPR on sleepers who are bedside. The Commission will consider these comments when it votes on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
