Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first officially diagnosed in the city of Wuhan, China in January 2020. In reality, the disease was identified in December 2019 in the same city where patients began showing symptoms of pneumonia of unidentified origin. Very soon the disease became a global pandemic due to the suppression of information in the country of origin and inadequate testing for the COVID-19 virus. Currently, > 101 million people have been found positive for this virus and > 2.17 million people have died. There are no signs that COVID-19 is slowing down. This deadly virus affects multiple vital organs (lungs, heart, nervous system, blood, and immune system), yet its exact mechanism of pathophysiology remains obscure. Depending on the viral load, sick people often show symptoms of fever, cough, shortness of breath, coagulopathy, cardiac abnormalities, fatigue, and death. Great strides have been made in COVID-19 testing, thereby allowing timely therapeutic intervention. Currently, vaccines are on the market from Pfizer, Moderna and Astra Zeneca with limited supply. Phase III clinical trials are also underway from other manufacturers. In the current scenario, nutraceuticals and other phyto-mineral supplements appear to be promising alternative solutions for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.
Women living with HIV (WLWH) often report heavy alcohol use and may experience substantial alcohol-related problems, but it is unclear whether it is necessary to completely quit drinking to reduce such problems.
To assess whether complete reduction of alcohol use produced significantly greater improvement in alcohol-related problems than a partial reduction of alcohol use (reducing alcohol use to ≤7 or ≤14 drinks per week).
We used data from a randomized clinical trial examining the effectiveness of Naltrexone in WLWH who reported heavy drinking (>7 drinks/week) at baseline. The primary outcome (alcohol-related problems) was measured using the Short Inventory of Problems. The primary predictor (drinking status quit drinking, reduced drinking, continue heavy drinking) was measured using a 30-day timeline followback.
The sample consisted of 163 WLWH (50% 50 years or older, 85% Black). WLWH who reported past violence had significantly greater mean SIP scores at baseline (19.9 vs. 10.5,
<.0001). Forty-eight percent of women quit drinking by 7 months and 28% reduced drinking to ≤7 drinks/week; these women had significant reduction in alcohol-related problems compared to those who continued heavy drinking (-8.2 and -4.8 vs. -0.8,
= 0.0003). Quitting and reducing drinking were also associated with statistically significant decreases among the physical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and social subscales of the SIP (
<.05), although a similar pattern, while not statistically significant, exists for the impulse control subscale.
While completely quitting drinking produced the greatest improvement, reducing drinking to ≤14 drinks per week can significantly reduce alcohol-related problems in WLWH.
While completely quitting drinking produced the greatest improvement, reducing drinking to ≤14 drinks per week can significantly reduce alcohol-related problems in WLWH.Cervical cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer deaths in women due to poor prognosis and high mortality rates. A novel mRNA-miRNA-lncRNA signature linked to prognosis of cervical cancer is needed to help clinicians judge the prognosis of individual patients more accurately. On the basis of GEO datasets, a total of 161 upregulated and 242 downregulated DE-mRNAs were identified firstly. Among them, eight potential biomarkers were found to have prognostic values with cervical cancer and miRNAs-lncRNAs related to these biomarkers were then analyzed to create mRNA-miRNA-lncRNA networks in cervical cancer. Moreover, in vitro experiments such as qRT-PCR, western blot and Edu assays were also performed to validate these promising targets. On the basis of these findings, a total of eight mRNA-miRNA-lncRNA subnetworks were finally established as a novel mRNA-miRNA-lncRNA signature and independent prognostic indicator of clinically relevant parameters by ROC analysis, univariate and multivariate Cox regression. Since some work of validation was done, it is believed that this mRNA-miRNA-lncRNA prognostic signature may be applied as a potential clinical judgment to estimate the prognosis of cervical cancer. This work examines relationships between friendships and implicit preferences across two large samples. There is considerable evidence in the contact literature suggesting that friendships relate to more favorable attitudes toward outgroups, however, most evidence reflects explicit self-report measures. Using samples of 235,543 participants who completed the Disability IAT and 533,220 participants who completed the Sexuality IAT on the Project Implicit website, results indicate that participants reporting either a disabled friend or close acquaintance demonstrated weaker implicit preferences for abled over disabled people. INDY inhibitor Similarly, those with gay friends demonstrated weaker implicit preference for "straight" over gay. The size of these relationships were considerably smaller than found for explicit evaluations. These effect size estimates should be useful to researchers studying contact-implicit preference relationships as it informs power analyses and sample size planning decisions. An efficient process for the preparation of a new ethyl 2-((3-(4-fluorophenyl)-6-methyl-4-oxo-3,4-dihydroquinazolin-2-yl)thio) acetate (5) was described. The prepared derivative was synthesized using the S-arylation method. Several analytical techniques, such as NMR, Raman and infrared spectroscopy, were used to characterize this compound. The compound was screened for cytotoxic activity against three human cancer cell lines human cervical cancer (HeLa), human lung adenocarcinoma (A549) and triple negative breast cancer (MDA-MB-231) cells using an MTT assay. It exhibited potent cytotoxic activity against the tested cell lines with IC50 values in the low micromolar range when compared to a standard drug, docetaxel. It also displayed potent inhibitory activity towards VEGFR-2 and EGFR tyrosine kinases, reflecting its potential to act as an effective anti-cancer agent.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.
