9 Signs That You're A Bedside Crib And Travel Cot Expert
Bedside Crib and Travel Cot

Bedside cribs are a bassinet-style cot that can be attached to the side of your bed. They usually come with a side that can be dropped down for easy access and some come with an incline that's ideal for babies with reflux.

MFM test subject Georgina found the crib to be simple to assemble and the instructions were clear, which made it a quick and easy build. It folds down to a compact size, and comes with a handy travel bag.

Easy to assemble

They are small and simple to set up, meaning they can be set close to your bed. They also tend to be lighter, making them more mobile. Georgina one of our MFM home test participants, praised the Maxi-Cosi for being "super straightforward to build, with clear instructions and simple zips." The crib can be used as a travel crib and comes with a handy bag. It has multiple mesh openings for ventilation and its height adjustable allows it to fit on any mattress.

Some cribs with a bedside feature an additional side panel that can be removed so that you can easily reach your baby without stepping out of the bed. This is a great choice for breastfeeding mums or those who wish to be close to their baby all night long but don't want to risk co-sleeping (which is associated to a higher risk of SIDS).

Most models have built-in rocking functions. This can be a comforting experience for your baby, and can help them to sleep. Some cribs offer a recline position that can be beneficial in the case of reflux or colic. This position should only be used under supervision and you should consult an expert in health or a doctor prior to attempting it.

Most cribs with a bedside have a canopy over them to protect your baby from light and noise, which can be helpful in keeping them calm. Some cribs come with a storage area underneath that can be used to store additional blankets, diapers, and other clothes for your child.

Some cribs that are bedside can be converted into standalone cots or toddler beds This is an important selling feature for families. The Joie Roomie, winner of the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards is a fantastic example. It comes with removable side panels as well as a conversion kit and a tummy-tilt that makes it ideal for travel. It also comes with 5 different height settings to match your bed and was highly praised by our MFM home testers for being simple to assemble and comfortable. It is also compact and easy to move around. The Graco Play Yard (also called as the pack and play) is a different favorite and was shortlisted for the 2022 Mother&Baby Awards.

Cosy and comfy

You can keep an eye on your child from the in the comfort of your bed using a bedside crib. It's an ideal option for a mom who is recovering from a c-section because you can easily pull baby out towards you for night feeds or nappy changes without having to get out of bed. The most comfortable cribs come with mesh sides that allow you to observe your baby's growth.

Some cribs lower the barrier completely, offering the convenience of co-sleeping without the risks (check that the crib you choose is compliant with the latest safety standards though). Others allow you to lower the barrier but then raise it after you've lifted baby out, which is better for parents who have an apprehension of their child falling off the side of their mattress.

The Luah - which won the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket - is designed to be attached to bedsteads and divan beds, but does require straps that are longer than some other models (check the specs to be sure your bed can accommodate). The spacious design features an opening side panel and a patent-pending perforated bottom that creates air cushioning to increase air flow. There's an integrated setting for reflux as well as the ability to swivel 360 degrees, allowing you to rotate the crib according to the position your baby prefers.

If you're looking for something smaller than the Tutti Bambini COZee is a different stylish option, with oak legs and smart fabric options to match your decor. It's also easy to assemble. Georgina who took part in the MFM test was able to put it together quickly and without requiring any instructions. It is also a great travel cot. It folds flat and can be easily stuffed into bags.

The Next2me Magic, which was shortlisted for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, is also slightly larger than the average, but is still quite compact and easy to attach to your bed. Georgina found it easy to put together, though she was not convinced that the zips could have been better explained on the instruction sheet.

Easy to clean

When you're looking at bedside cribs and travel cots be sure to look for models that have a removable mattress cover which can be washed in the machine. That will help you keep it clean from leaky nappies, sick babies and dribbles. You should also choose an item that can be easily disassembled, allowing you to clean and disinfect all the nooks.

This is crucial, since it's the best way to be sure that all germs and dirt have been eliminated. Verify that the sides of the crib are securely attached so that your baby cannot slide off or become trapped.

In addition to being easy to clean, you'll need an infant crib that is comfortable for your baby and will fit comfortably into your bed. This is especially crucial if you're using a bedside crib to facilitate co-sleeping. These cribs are designed to be connected securely to the parent's side, giving parents to easily access to their infant throughout the night to feed and comfort them, while ensuring the security that separate sleeping areas provide.

When you are choosing a crib to put at your bed take into consideration whether it comes with extra features that may be beneficial to you. Some cribs can tilt or rock, which is ideal for babies who are a bit fussy.

You'll need to ensure that your crib or travel bed has a flat, firm mattress that fits snugly into the frame. This will reduce the risk of SIDS by ensuring that your baby's head and feet don't slide down into any gaps or folds in the bedding.

It's also a good idea to buy a new mattress for your crib or travel cot, rather than using one that was given to you by someone else or bought second-hand. Mattresses that are used are more likely to losing their shape with time and increase the risk of SIDS. All cribs new to market must be compliant with BS EN1130:2019. This is the most recent standard that introduces stricter requirements to ensure the safety of your sleep and provide effective solutions.

Multi-faceted

The bedside crib, also known as a co-sleeping bed as it's often referred to it is attached to the bed to allow you to access your baby easily at night without leaving your sleeping area. They can also be used as a separate crib during the daytime. The majority of cribs have a side panel that can be moved down so you can be able to see and touch your baby. Some cribs let you put the side panel down at night. This allows you to be close and comfortable with your baby while minimising the risk of sharing a bed. Some cribs will also convert into a travel cot, or come with additional features such as rocking, tilting (use with caution, make sure to talk to your GP about this) or changing into an older baby cot or playpen.

The SnuzPod 4 crib is popular for many reasons, not just because of its sleek Scandi design. This crib has six height settings, as well as a useful shelf to store things on. It's also heavier and bulkier than some of the more portable cribs we've tried however it comes with a handy bag to keep it clean and dust-free in storage.

It's easy to assemble with clear instructions and an easy-to-use toolkit to assist you. It's also easy to clean, with an easy-to-clean mattress cover and breathable fabric. It also comes with a few additional features compared to other cribs, such as an anti-reflux angle, a rocking feature, and an storage compartment.

Jasmin says that this crib is great because it is "easy to reach the baby in the middle the night for a peaceful feeding and is larger than the majority of Moses Baskets, which means it will last a longer time before my son is old enough to use it". It's also easy to wipe down and feels solid and well-made. baby bedside sleeper can be set on a divan, which makes it a great option for those with a small space. It also comes with a handy carry bag to carry around when travelling. A perfect all-rounder.
