Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers and bassinets) are designed to allow parents to snuggle with their infant at night without fear of SIDS. However they are not suggested for use until 6 months when your baby is required to be moved into a cot or moses basket.
bedside baby bed was impressed that this model comes with a lift-off bassinet you can use around the house and a manual rocking function. It was also simple to put together and came in its own travel bag for easy storage.
Size
Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. They also can be converted into toddler beds, while they are typically used until three years old. older. If you're considering a wooden cot, there are usually two sizes to choose from both large and standard both of which will convert into a toddler bed or cot beds. Selecting the larger of the two is a good choice if you want your child to sleep in it until they reach approximately three.
MFM mum home test Jasmine was pleased that this bedside cot was slightly larger than the Moses basket but not too big for her baby's room. Jasmine says it's easy to get the baby into and out of the cot during evening feedings or to soothe and that it's quality is better than other cots she has seen that are flimsy.
Emily, another home tester, loves the flexibility of the Maxi-Cosi lora which is a lift-off, mobile bassinet. It also rocks. It also has a reflux incline option and a machine-washable liner that breathes. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. In contrast to International or European cot brands, the Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't need to buy another mattress as your baby grows. However, it does require a special bespoke bedding set (60x120cm). Here's the ideal mattress for your cot.
Height
When selecting a cot for the bed choose one that can be elevated to a height that is comfortable for feeding your baby. It must also be lowered out of the way, so you can raise your child towards you to feed them at night or soothe him. This feature is especially useful when you are recovering from a C Section. For instance the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.
It is also important to consider the level you would like the base of your crib to be. Some mothers find it is easier to lift their babies from their standard Moses baskets if the base is situated at the lowest level, while some prefer a higher height to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular choice, with one of our mum testers saying that it has an easy-to-use collapsible part that you can use at the push of one button.
Be aware that a bedside or bassinet device is only suitable when your baby is able to hold his head up with no assistance, which is usually about 6 months old. This is due to the risk of being suffocated. It is also important to remember that if you opt for a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can convert into a cot it is necessary to start removing the sides when your child is ready for this to ensure they don't climb out or fall out of bed.
Design
There are a variety of styles of cribs for bedside use, ranging from simple to luxurious. Some of the more expensive options come with features such as a built-in light or a center of calm that plays music and sound and comes with two levels to help soothe your baby back to sleep or a swivelling footrest that allows you to reach your child to feed them. Some models can be converted into the toddler bed or cot bed (or both) when your child is ready for their own bed.
For example the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards for the Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket category, has an adjustable base that allows you to take your baby and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without having to get out of bed. This makes it perfect for mothers who are recovering from Caesarean or need to stay in bed for longer durations of time. Jasmine, a MFM mum who tested this product at home, stated that it was easy to use and made it easier for her to reach her baby - especially after the c-section.
Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which has won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It includes an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's bigger than the other bedside cribs that we tested, but it folds into its travel bag to make it compact when not in use.
Leya, MFM mum home tester, also appreciated the bedside crib's function. She said it was designed for both parents and infants. 'It has an excellent design that is very simple to operate and is extremely durable. She also said that the bassinet's swivelling base was brilliant because it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to facilitate access for moms who are recovering from c-sections.
Safety
The most important security feature of a large bedside cot is that it can be easily moved up or down to allow parents to reach their baby when they require to feed them, soothe them, or change their nappy. This makes it ideal for mothers who are recovering from the c-section. Look for a design that lets you lower one side with the press of a button, so you can easily lift your baby up without getting out of bed. This is crucial, particularly when your baby grows and becomes more mobile. It is also important to not add anything to the cot that increases the chance of suffocation or injury, like pillows and duvets. These can cause babies to overheat.
The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product issues, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) as well as enclosed openings made of fabric (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance they would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at the very least, the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements weren't practical or effective in reducing number of incidents where infants are trapped by the bedside rail and an adult bed.
A majority of the incidents mentioned in the NPR concerned multi-use bedside sleepers which can be converted to other types of equipment, like play yards or bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative provision for multi-use bedside sleepers that would allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets using a removable attachment that can be permanently connected or removed when the product is not being used as the bassinet.
The CPSC is currently examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR on sleepers who are bedside. The Commission will consider these comments when deciding on the final rule which is expected to be published in November 2021.
