In this study, we aimed to retrospectively evaluate the volumes and cosmetic scores of mixed-type and spongy-type thyroid nodules treated with ethanol and radiofrequency (RF) ablation before and after treatment. In addition, the safety and efficacy of ethanol and RF ablation treatment methods were compared.

In the radiology department, mixed-type and spongy-type benign thyroid nodules undergoing ethanol and RF ablation between February 2015 and March 2020 were evaluated retrospectively. Consequently, 50 patients who received ethanol ablation therapy and 46 patients who received RF ablation therapy were included in the study. Nodule volumes obtained in pretreatment, third-month, and sixth-month control ultrasounds were noted. Similarly, the cosmetic scores obtained pretreatment and at the sixth-month follow-up were recorded for all patients.

All of the patients had a single nodule, and 46 patients (47.9%) received RF ablation, and 50 patients (52.1%) received ethanol ablation. The mean volume pretreatment in nodules with RF ablation was 21.41 ml, at the third-month control was 5.68 ml, and at the sixth-month control, it was 4.12 ml (
 < 0.05). In ethanol ablation therapy, the mean volume pretreatment was 20.52 ml, at the third-month control was 8.76 ml and at the sixth-month control was 6.01 ml (

Ultra-radical (UR) procedures, including splenectomy, are utilized to increase complete cytoreduction rates during Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) performed with the aim of complete macroscopic clearance of disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate if splenectomy negatively impacts survival when undertaken during CRS for advanced ovarian cancer (AOC) and compare published splenectomy and cytoreduction rates.

A retrospective review of all consecutive patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery for AOC between 16/05/2013-28/01/2019. Survival, baseline patient characteristics, complications and surgical parameters were recorded. Propensity scored matching (PSM) was performed to reduce bias.

154 patients identified over 71 months. 97 underwent standard, 57 underwent UR surgery, 27 patients received splenectomy (17.5%) No difference was seen in overall survival (OS) between all patients (median OS 34 months (95%CI 25.9-41.1) and patients who underwent splenectomy (median OS not yet reached) (p = >0.05). After PSM for various baseline covariates, no significant difference in splenectomy versus non-splenectomy patients (3-year survival 54% compared to 56%) (P > 0.05). Three splenectomy specific complications occurred; one each of pancreatic tail injury, left pleural effusion and streptococcal pharyngitis during chemotherapy. Methods This study uses data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey between 2002 and 2014. Disability status is measured by activities of daily living. Leisure activities include physical and social activities. A generalized linear mixed model with a time-lag design is used to analyze the trajectory of being disabled. Results Older ages are associated with double jeopardy of disability higher initial probability and faster pace. The double benefit of leisure activities is confirmed lower initial probability and a slower pace of change in disability over time.
