Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to allow parents to rest with their baby at night without risk of SIDS. However, they are only recommended for use up to 6 months of age when your baby will need to move into a cot or a moses basket.
Mehack is an MFM home tester, was awed by the fact that this model features an integrated bassinet that can be used throughout the home. It also comes with an option to rock manually. It was also easy to assemble and came in its own travel bag for convenient storage.
Size
Cots and cot beds vary in size in size, with cots smaller than cot beds. They also can be converted into toddler beds, while the cot beds are typically used until three years old. older. If you're considering a wooden cot, you'll find two sizes available that are large and standard both of which convert into a cot bed/toddler bed. Selecting the larger of the two is a good option if you want your child to sleep in it until the age of at least three years old.
Jasmine, an MFM mom who tried the product at home, was pleased the fact that it was a little bigger than a Moses' basket but still not too large for the room of her baby. She says that it is easy to get the baby in and out of the cot for night feeds or for soothing and that it's quality is better than other cots she has seen that are less sturdy.
Another home test subject, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi Lora can be used in a variety of ways it's a drop-off bassinet that can be moved around the home, and it's a blast too. It also comes with an incline of reflux as well as a machine washable liner that breathes. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. Contrary to some International or European cot brands, the Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't need to purchase a new mattress as your baby grows. It does require a special bedding set (60x120cm). Here you can find the perfect mattress for your cot.
Height
When selecting a bedside crib make sure it can be adjusted to a suitable height for you. It should also be able to be lower away from the way, so you can lift up your baby to feed them at night or comfort him. This feature is especially useful when you are recovering from a C-section. The Next2me cot and the Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to a maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch can be adjusted to 70cm.
Another thing to consider is how low you want the cot's base to be. While some moms find it easier to lift their babies out of standard Moses baskets when they are at the lowest height, others prefer having a higher base that gives them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular option with one of our mom testers stating that it comes with a simple collapsible side that is easy to push down with the click of one button.
Remember that a bassinet/bedside sleeper should only be used until your baby is able to hold their head without assistance, usually at about 6 months. This is due to the risk of suffocation. Be aware that if your child is old enough to be able to convert the bedside sleeper into a cot, you will have to remove the sides once they are able to do so. This will prevent them from falling out or climbing out of bed.
Design
There are a variety of styles of cribs for beds with a range of styles from simple to luxurious. The more expensive options could include features such as an integrated night light, a soothing centre which plays music and sounds and comes with two levels of vibration to help soothe your baby back to sleep, or even a swivelling base that makes it easier to reach your child for feedings. Some models can be transformed into a toddler bed or cot bed (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.
The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air For instance has won Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It features a swivelling bottom that allows you to pick up your baby and transfer them to the opposite side of the crib without getting out of the bed. This is ideal for new mums recovering from Caesarean sections or who have to stay in bed for prolonged periods of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine loved this feature, saying it was easy to use and made reaching her baby easier - especially after her c-section.
Another option is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which has won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the category of the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket and comes with an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline, and rocking function. It's bigger than other cribs for bed that we tested, but it folds down into its bag for travel, making it compact when not in use.
MFM mom home tester Leya also liked the functionality of this bedside crib, explaining how it was designed with the needs of parents and children in mind. It is a fantastic design that is incredibly simple to operate and is super-sturdy. She said that the bassinet's pivoting base was fantastic because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to facilitate access for moms who are recovering from C-sections.
Safety
The most important security feature of a large bedside cot is that it is able to be moved up or down to allow parents to reach their baby when they need to feed them, soothe them, or change their nappy. This is why it's perfect for mothers who are still be recovering from a C-section. Look for baby bedside co sleeper that lets you lower one side at the push of a button. This way, you can effortlessly lift your baby without having to get out of the bed. This is particularly important as your baby grows older and becomes more mobile. Avoid adding anything that could increase the chance of suffocation or injury, such as pillowcases and duvets that can cause your baby to overheat.
The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product-related issues like gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11) and consumer assembly errors (6 incidents).
In its NPR In its NPR, the CPSC considered the possibility of adding additional requirements for sleepers in bed, such as the requirement that these products satisfy the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at the very least, meet the maximum height requirement for the side rail. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements weren't efficient or effective in reducing number of incidents where infants are trapped between the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.
The majority of the incidents covered in the NPR focused on multi-use bedside sleepers that can be transformed into other modes, such as play yards or bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC add a second provision to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers with multiple uses that would allow them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using a removable attachment. Attachments can be permanently attached or disconnected when the product's not being used as a bassinet for babies.
The CPSC is considering these and other comments received in response to its NPR on bedside sleepers. The Commission will take into consideration these comments when it decides on the final rule which is expected to be issued in the month of November 2021.
