Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to allow parents to snuggle with their infant at night without risk of SIDS. However, they are only suggested for use until 6 months, when your baby will need to be moved into a cot, or a moses basket.
Mehack Mehack, an MFM home tester, was impressed by the feature that this model comes with an adjustable bassinet that can be used around the house. It also has the ability to rock manually. It was easy to set up, and came with its own travel bag.
Size
Cots and cot beds vary in size, with cots being smaller than beds for cots. They can also be converted into toddler beds, while the cot beds are typically used up to three years older. If you're looking for a wooden cot, there are typically two sizes to choose from that are large and standard both of which will convert into a cot/toddler bed. If best bedside cot for newborn 'd like your child (or children) to be capable of sleeping in the larger cot, it's a great idea to pick the larger one.
Jasmine, an MFM mother who tested the product at home, liked the fact that it was a little bigger than the typical Moses' basket but still not too large for the room of her baby. She says it's easy to carry her child into and out of the cot for nighttime feeding or soothing and that the quality is great, compared with many she's encountered that feel cheap and flimsy.
Another home tester, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi is a versatile product - it's a lift-off bassinet that you can move around the house, and it rocks too. It also comes with a reflux incline option and a machine-washable breathable liner. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the Best Cot Crib, Crib, or Moses Basket. Unlike some International or European cot brands, the Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't need to purchase a new mattress as your baby grows. It requires a specific bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the right mattress for your cot here.
Height
When selecting a bedside crib pick one that can be adjusted to a suitable height for you. It must also be lower to a level that is not in the way so you can lift up your child towards you to feed them at night or soothe him. This feature is especially useful when you are recovering from a C-section. For example the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to an elevation of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.
You should also consider how low you'd like the base of your crib to be. While some moms find it easier to lift their babies out of the standard Moses baskets when they are at the lowest height, other mums prefer having a higher base that gives them more stability. One of our mum testers mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It is a collapsible side you can push at the press of the button.
Be aware that a bassinet/bedside sleeper should not be used until your baby can hold their head up unaided typically approximately 6 months. This is because of the danger of inhaling suffocation. It is also important to be aware that if your child is old enough to be able to convert the bedside sleeper into a cot, they will have to remove the sides when they are ready to do this. This will stop them from falling out or climbing out of bed.
Design
There are many different styles of cribs that are bedside, ranging from basic to extravagant. Some of the more luxurious options include features such as an integrated light and a soothing center that plays music and sounds and has two levels to help ease your baby back to sleep, or an adjustable footrest that makes it easier for you to reach your child when you need to feed them. Some models can be transformed into the toddler bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready for their own bed.
The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, for example has won Bronze at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot Moses Basket or Crib category. It has a swivelling bottom that lets you take your baby to the crib and transfer them to the other side of the crib without having to get out of bed. This is perfect for mothers who are recovering from Caesarean sections, or those who need to stay in bed for prolonged periods of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine was awed by this feature, stating that it was easy to use and made her baby much easier particularly after her c-section.
Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Award in the category of the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It includes an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline and rocking function. It's a bit bigger than the other cribs that we've tested but it folds flat in its travel bag, so it's relatively compact when not in use.
MFM mom home tester Leya also liked the functionality of this bedside crib, explaining how it was designed with parents and babies in mind. It is lightweight and easy to move. Its swivelling base is brilliant because it allows you to move the bassinet from side-to-side, and one of its sides can be opened down to ease access - particularly for new mums who are recovering from c-sections,' she said.
Safety
A large bedside cot's main safety characteristic is the fact that it is able to be adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their child to feed or comfort them, or change his or their diaper. This makes it ideal for new mothers who may still recovering from a C section. Find a model that lets you lower one side at the push of a button. This way, you can easily lift your baby up without having to get out of the bed. This is important, especially when your baby grows and becomes more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation such as pillowcases and duvets which could cause your baby to overheat.
The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to issues with the product that include gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) as well as enclosed openings made of fabric (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).
In its NPR, the CPSC examined the possibility of additional requirements for bedside sleepers, like the requirement that these beds satisfy the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at the very least, meet the maximum height requirement for the side rail. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements weren't efficient or effective in reducing the amount of instances where infants are trapped between the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.
The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that can be converted to different modes like play yards and bassinets. Several commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule a different provision for multi-use bedside sleepers that would allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirements for bassinets using a removable attachment that can be connected permanently or disconnected when the item is not being used as a bassinet.
The CPSC is currently examining these and other comments that were received in response to its NPR on bedside sleepers. The Commission will consider these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be published in the month of November 2021.
