Buying a Bedside Crib For Travel
The dimensions of this crib are perfect for mums. It's larger than a Moses Basket, but smaller than the Cot Bed. It also folds down to a third of its original size and fits into a handy travel bag, making it ideal for travel.
Just remember that the crib should be used only for sleeping and that toys such as pillows, blankets and pillows are dangers to suffocate.
Safety
When you are shopping for a travel cot make sure that the manufacturer is adhering to all safety standards. The best place to start is the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website, which will inform you whether or not a specific portable crib has been recalled. Pick a mattress that's suitable for the crib of your baby so it doesn't slide through the gaps or cause an suffocation hazard.
When choosing a bassinet or crib make sure it is in compliance with the latest safety standards that were updated in 2022. Avoid older cribs and cribs modified for travel or cribs with drop-sides. These cribs haven't been tested and could pose a risk to your baby's safety.
A travel crib needs to be sturdy and well-constructed. Examine for loose, missing or broken screws and other hardware. If best bedside cot for newborn using a playard, it should have mesh windows and secure walls to allow air circulation. The crib slats shouldn't be more than 2 3/8 inches apart to avoid the baby's head and limbs from becoming trapped. Don't put any pillows, blankets, stuffed animals or toys in the crib. These can cause suffocation or strangle your baby and should be removed from the crib at the time your child is able to push up on their knees and hands or before 5 months old, whichever comes first.
It is also essential to check regularly for broken or loose screws and hardware, especially when you travel with your infant. Take all plastic out of the crib too.
If you're using a portable crib, make sure it's not directly under a window. A window could be an accident hazard for your baby could get hurt if they roll into it. It's best to keep your baby's bedroom away from windows, even when they are old enough to roll over. It is important to wake your baby when they begin to roll over while sleeping.
Portability
Portable cribs (or playards which is what they're sometimes referred to as) are a great choice for anyone who is on vacation, has a guests over, or simply needing a safe crib for use for a sleepover with friends. These playards fold up easily to build, compact when they're closed, and come with an incredibly comfortable mattress that can hold newborns up to 15kg.
MFM home testers are awestruck by the BabyBjorn travel crib because it's simple to fold and store. Its simple drop-down panels that are one-handed are also a breeze to use for parents who are tired. It's not the tiniest of packs-and-play on our list but it's a decent weight, weighing just under 15 pounds, and it comes with standard carry handles instead of an e-bag strap, which some find more comfortable to carry around.
The Joie Kubbie Sleep is another great alternative. It combines a bedside bassinet and crib into a compact unit. It is ideal for holidays and overnight stays with family and friends. It's not the most affordable alternative but it does come with a variety of features, including an organizer basket, soothing night lights that change colour, lullabies, and white noise, which can aid your child to fall asleep.
It's also easy to keep clean with wipeable and machine-washable fabrics. It's also, despite its size and weight (it's on the heavier side when open), it's relatively lightweight at just under 12kg and slots neatly into a small, handy bag included perfect for trips away from home. It has six different height settings and a tummy-tilt for reflux/colic baby. It's able to fit all sizes of beds. It's also very easy to install and our MFM tester being able to have it set up in only 10 minutes. You'll need to purchase a separate mattress for it, however.
Feeding
It is essential that your child is safe and comfortable when you travel, whether for pleasure or business. It's better to purchase a travel-specific crib or bassinet than to use one that you already own. These are smaller, with mesh sides that allow parents to monitor their children without disturbing them, and are light enough to allow for easy transport between destinations. They also meet all safety standards of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and haven't been recalled.
If you have to utilize a crib for your bed it is recommended that your baby be placed on their back and the mattress be free of blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals. This type of co-sleeping increases the chance of SIDS. If you do have to sleep with your partner at times ensure that your baby is asleep and that you and your partner are dressed and awake.
The kinds of cribs that are available for newborns and young babies include:
Some are designed to look like a mini-crib or Moses baskets, while others have sides that can be lowered into the parent's bed. This gives parents access to the baby for feeding and comforting while avoiding the risks of true co-sleeping which the AAP cautions against due dangers of suffocation. Examples include the Arm's Reach Clear-Vue Bassinet, a bedside sleeper that attaches to the sides of a mattress for a parent. This is a good option for older children, since the sides can be raised so that you can reach the baby without having to lift them from the bed. The travel cot that has a built-in crib that can be removed enables you to lift a sleeping baby for feeding or for care.
Sleeping
Bedside cribs are a great way to safely co-sleep with your baby. They are placed near your bed to allow you to easily reach them for night feedings and check on their sleep without disturbing them. Some cribs have an opening on the side that you can lower to make it easier, and others come with an adjustable height adjustment to ensure they are able to be able to fit in your bed at home or away.
It was previously recommended that infants sleep in their own bedroom. However, parents are increasingly preferring to co-sleep. Also known as rooming-in, this arrangement lets babies be close to their parents, but remain in a safe space on their own bassinet or crib. There are a variety of co-sleepers available such as the iCrib, which is an iCrib-style portable crib that can fit on the top of a bed, or a crib. It has a light frame and a removable mattress and it can be folded for easy storage. There is also the Joie Roomie Go crib, that can be attached to the edge of the bed and has 7 height settings that can be adjusted and a tummy tilt to help with reflux and colic. bedside crib vs cot was praised by our MFM home testers for its ease of use and compact folding, and it comes in a variety of colors.
You can also buy freestanding bedside cribs like our Lilly or Alain that you can put next to an existing bed frame. The cribs feature a side barrier that can slide down to allow you to pick up your child for feedings at night. However the cribs are completely self-contained, allowing your baby to continue sleeping peacefully. These cribs are in compliance with the new BS EN1130 safety standards, which require a 120mm separation between your mattress and child's crib.
Lastly, there are cribs for travel that are specially made to be carried on the road. These are typically much smaller and lighter than a standard crib which makes them more convenient to take into and out of hotels and cars. The Munchkin Brica travel crib, for example, can be set up and taken down in less than an hour and weighs just 3 pounds, so it is easy to carry and lift.
