Rice is considered as a salt-sensitive plant, particularly at early vegetative stage, and its production is suffered from salinity due to expansion of salt affected land in areas under cultivation. Hence, significant increase of rice productivity on salinized lands is really necessary. Today genome-wide association study (GWAS) is a method of choice for fine mapping of QTLs involved in plant responses to abiotic stresses including salinity stress at early vegetative stage. In this study using > 33,000 SNP markers we identified rice genomic regions associated to early stage salinity tolerance. Eight salinity-related traits including shoot length (SL), root length (RL), root dry weight (RDW), root fresh weight (RFW), shoot fresh weight (SFW), shoot dry weight (SDW), relative water content (RWC) and TW, and 4 derived traits including SL-R, RL-R, RDW-R and RFW-R in a diverse panel of rice were evaluated under salinity (100 mM NaCl) and normal conditions in growth chamber. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) used for improvement of salinity tolerance in molecular breeding programmes of rice. Further study and identification of effective genes on salinity tolerance by the use of candidate gene-association analysis can help to precisely uncover the mechanisms of salinity tolerance at molecular level. A time dependent relationship between salt tolerance and expression level of candidate genes could be recognized.During amino acid limitation, the protein kinase Gcn2 phosphorylates the α subunit of eIF2, thereby regulating mRNA translation. In yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and mammals, eIF2α phosphorylation regulates translation of related transcription factors Gcn4 and Atf4 through upstream open reading frames (uORFs) to activate transcription genome wide. However, mammals encode three more eIF2α kinases activated by distinct stimuli. Did the translational control system involving eIF2α phosphorylation evolve from so simple (as found in yeast S. cerevisiae) to complex (as found in humans)? Recent genome-wide translational profiling studies of amino acid starvation response in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe provide an unexpected answer to this question.Polyphosphates (polyP) are polymers of inorganic phosphates joined by high-energy bonds to form long chains. These chains are present in all forms of life but were once disregarded as 'molecular fossils'. selleckchem PolyP has gained attention in recent years following new links to diverse biological roles ranging from energy storage to cell signaling. PolyP research in humans and other higher eukaryotes is limited by a lack of suitable tools and awaits the identification of enzymatic players that would enable more comprehensive studies. Therefore, many of the most important insights have come from single-cell model systems. Here, we review determinants of polyP metabolism, regulation, and function in major microbial systems, including bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and algae. We highlight key similarities and differences that may aid in our understanding of how polyP impacts cell physiology at a molecular level.
Little is known about whether health literacy is associated with affects certain key outcomes in head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors. We investigated (i) the socio-demographic and clinical profile of health literacy and (ii) associations among between health literacy and self-management behaviours, health-related quality of life (HRQL) and fear of recurrence (FoR) in HNC survivors.

A population-based survey was conducted in Ireland. Health literacy was assessed using a validated single-item question. Socio-demographic, clinical and psychosocial outcome variables (FoR, self-management behaviours, HRQL) were collected. Multivariable linear regression was performed to estimate associations between health literacy and each psychosocial outcome.

Three hundred ninety-five (50%) individuals responded to the survey. Inadequate health literacy was evident among 47% of the sample. In adjusted models, HNC survivors with inadequate health literacy had significantly lower levels of self-management behaviours in the for this group.
Treatment with hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) has potentially severe effects on physical and psychosocial functioning. Poor social support has been linked with physical morbidity and mortality as well as psychological distress in HCT survivors. This study tested a theory-driven hypothesis that social support buffers adverse effects of health stressors of comorbidities and graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) on distress and adherence to recommended healthcare among long-term HCT survivors.

This cross-sectional study analyzed baseline data from a randomized controlled trial in adult survivors 3-18years post-HCT. Data included medical records and patient-reported outcomes including cancer and treatment distress (CTXD), healthcare adherence (HCA), comorbidity index, cGVHD, ENRICHD Social Support Instrument (ESSI), Social Activity Log, and Health Self-Efficacy. We tested hypothesized models for HCA and CTXD using blocked hierarchical linear regressions.

Among the 781 HCT survivors completing baseline assessment, 38% had > 3 comorbidities, 8% had moderate-severe cGVHD, 30% reported low social support, 30% reported elevated distress, and 49% reported low healthcare adherence. Social support and self-efficacy were directly related to both adherence and distress. Regression models supported the hypothesized moderated relationships for distress but not for healthcare adherence.

The two tested models confirm that the health stressors of comorbidities and cGVHD are moderated by better social support and self-efficacy in their associations with lower distress but without moderating effects for healthcare adherence.

Social support and self-efficacy confer protective benefits on healthcare adherence and psychological distress. Interventions are needed that focus on maintaining social networks or finding new networks if necessary.

Cryptococcal Meningitis (CM) remains a high-risk clinical condition, and many patients require emergency department (ED) management for complications and stabilization.

This narrative review provides an evidence-based summary of the current data for the emergency medicine evaluation and management of CM.

This review evaluates the diagnosis, management, and empiric treatment of suspected CM in the ED. CM can easily evade diagnosis with a subacute presentation, and should be considered in any patient with a headache, neurological deficit, or who is immunocompromised. As a definitive diagnosis of CM will not be made in the ED, management of a patient with suspected CM includes prompt diagnostic testing and initiation of empiric treatment. Multiple types of newer Cryptococcal antigen tests provide high sensitivity and specificity both in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Patients should be treated empirically for bacterial, fungal, and viral meningitis, specifically with amphotericin B and flucytosine for presumed CM.
