Environmentally friendly mitigation of pollutants from effluents: Accumulation and fate using latest technical improvements.
© 2020 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.Various serious adverse events (AE) have been reported to occur at a high rate in patients treated with BRAF plus mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK) inhibitor combination therapy, but their subtypes differ among the BRAF/MEK inhibitors. Pyrexia or a spike of fever are well-known AE of BRAF inhibitors, with or without MEK inhibitors, and have been reported to have a high incidence after dabrafenib/trametinib, but not after encorafenib/binimetinib. In this report, we describe three cases of severe pyrexia in nivolumab-resistant advanced melanoma after successful combined therapy with encorafenib plus binimetinib. Interestingly, in all cases, the serum levels of soluble CD163 C-X-C motif chemokine (CXCL)9, CXCL10 and CXCL11, which are known biomarkers for adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD), increased in parallel with the development of pyrexia. Our present cases suggest that pyrexia caused by BRAF/MEK inhibitors may possess a similar pathophysiology as that of AOSD. © 2020 Japanese Dermatological Association.Caseous calcification of the mitral annulus (CCMA) is a very rare form of mitral annular calcification (MAC). CCMA accounts for 0.63% of all cases and 0.06-0.07% of the total population and usually seen in elderly and female patients. Hypercholesterolemia and the dissolution of lipid-laden macrophages may be implicated in liquefaction necrosis. CCMA is composed of a mixture of calcium, fatty acid, and cholesterol. The name "caseous" comes from the cheese-like or toothpaste-like consistency of the mass. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging may help in differentiating MAC from CCMA and should perform. The first treatment option should be conservative treatment because of surgical complications of the procedure. In the development of new technologies for controlling ticks, Metarhizium anisopliae complex (M. anisopliae s. l.) Sorokın, 1883 (Ascomycota Clavicipitaceae) have been shown to be an effective and safe alternative. However, when applied in the field, abiotic factors may directly influence their microbial activity, and different oily adjuvants enhance fungal efficacy, stability and viability under environmental conditions. Here, the efficacy of two Metarhizium anisopliae s.l. isolates (CG 148 and CG 347) were compared in mineral oil (MO) or vegetable oil (VO) emulsions to control cattle ticks under semi-natural conditions, as well as their persistence in the soil over time. Engorged female ticks were placed on the soil of grass pots previously treated or not with conidial oil-in-water emulsions. Both M. anisopliae s.l. oil-in-water emulsions tested were able to control R. microplus, achieving up to 100% daily efficacy, and remained viable in the soil for up to 60 days after treatment. These results show the prospective applicability of Metarhizium spp. to control the cattle tick and a real possibility for its control in the environment. © 2020 The Royal Entomological Society.BACKGROUND AND AIM Cardiac sarcoma is a rare condition and may mimic atrial myxoma. We present a case report of a man with a cardiac sarcoma. METHOD Case report presentation. RESULTS A 68-year-old man with a permanent pacemaker presented to us with a 4-month history of breathlessness. Echocardiography revealed a large right atrial mass adherent to the pacemaker lead and a provisional diagnosis of atrial myxoma was made based on echocardiographic appearance. A 60 x 30 x 30 mm irregular lobulated tumour was surgically resected from the right atrium. Upon histopathologic examination, the tumour was consistent with an undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. CONCLUSION Cardiac sarcomas have an extremely poor prognosis and more unfortunately this man developed a surgical site infection and died of acute mediastinitis. We discuss the presentation, imaging and current surgical approaches to cardiac sarcoma. They can be aesthetically disfiguring, functionally debilitating, and emotionally distressing. Lasers have introduced new mechanisms to improve scars both on aesthetic and symptomatic levels. AIM OF WORK Comparing the efficacy of fractional CO2 laser, long-pulsed NdYAG laser and their combination in the treatment of hypertrophic scars and keloids on clinical, histopathological, and biochemical basis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Thirty patients with hypertrophic scars and keloids were enrolled in the study. Three scars in each patient were randomly assigned to treatment modalities (i) Fractional CO2 , (ii) NdYAG laser, (iii) Combined CO2 and NdYAG lasers. For each treatment area four sessions, 4-6 weeks apart were performed. Clinical evaluation was done before and 1 month following last session using the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) and the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS). Routine hematoxylin and eosin, Masson't elevation in all treatment modalities. Side effects were significantly higher in treatment area C (combined treatment). CONCLUSION Long pulsed NdYAG laser is effective and safe treatment of hypertrophic scars and keloids. Fractional CO2 laser yields better improvement in hypertrophic scars, while in keloids both fractional CO2 and NdYAG lasers achieve comparable improvement. Combination in the same session did not add significant additional benefit and the side effects profile was higher. LIMITATIONS small sample size and short follow-up period. Lasers Surg. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty central obese women were randomly divided into two equal groups. Women in the control group received prescribed low-calorie diet regimen only, while women in the study group received three Cryolipolysis sessions plus the same dietary regimen for 3 months. Assessment of women in each group for weight, height to obtain the body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness as well as evaluation of lipid profile and liver enzymes was done just before starting the treatment procedures and immediately after ending the study duration.
