The macaw with gold and blue is a stunning bird. Its stunning visual appeal is well-known. Its sociable nature makes it a wonderful companion for families. It is also excellent in socializing, and can quickly learn new words and tricks.

Our own blue and gold macaw, Pteri, can say hello, apple, water and much more. The birds are able to live for more than 50 years.

Lolita’s Personality

Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are smart and affectionate. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They can get bored easily and find different ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't interacting with them enough. If they aren't socialized properly macaws may become aggressive and can even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are lively birds who enjoy playing, climbing and play. Ziggy Our Scarlet Macaw need at least 2 to 3 hours per day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games while listening to music, and learning tricks. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local restaurants and bars. They are not only a great pet but is also a great companion for children.

Despite their adoring nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a distraction to those living near. They can make high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which could be a problem in condos and apartments or in close proximity to children who might be scared by their roar.

This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. Due to this the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once the sex of the birds is known the breeding process can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. This isn't a simple process, and it's important that the owner is patient and realizes that this isn't a task to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can help to speed up the process and can help to correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's care


For decades activists have been lobbying for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, activists believed that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to sea.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, pledged to come up with plans with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the rest of her days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Activists from across the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. They include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

A balanced diet is vital for the health of a blue and gold macaw. These beautiful birds require high-quality food items, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. In captivity, a macaw well-fed can expect to live up to 60 years. Additionally, this magnificent bird requires plenty of room to fly and exercise.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita is being criticised for the quality of food that they feed to killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. While the species is threatened and is in a tank that some consider to be too small.

Lolita's Health

Lolita is beautiful, but her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and would like to see her released back into the wild. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was an attraction for tourists for many years. She has battled chronic illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile state.

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita, many people believe that she could be closer than ever before to a wild life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has stated his commitment to transfer the whale from her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she can swim in the ocean and even meet the orca believed to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the beloved whale who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal problem.
