7 Easy Tips For Totally Making A Statement With Your Large Bedside Cot
Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots, also referred to as bassinets or co-sleepers are designed to let parents sleep close to their children at night without the risk of SIDS. They are only recommended up to 6 months, after which your baby will be ready to transition to an actual crib.

Mehack, a MFM home tester, was awed by the feature that this model comes with an adjustable bassinet that can be used throughout the house. It also comes with an option to rock manually. It was also easy to put together and came in its own bag for easy storage.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. They also can be converted into toddler beds, whereas cot beds are generally only used until three years old. old. There are two sizes of wooden cots, large and standard that can be transformed into a toddler bed or cot. The larger one is a good idea if you want your child to sleep in it until they reach at least three years old.

MFM mum home tester Jasmine loved that the bedside cot was slightly larger than a Moses basket, but not too big for her baby's room. Jasmine says it's easy to get the baby into and out of the cot during night feedings or soothing, and that its quality is superior to others she has seen that are flimsy.

Another home test subject, Emily, likes how versatile the Maxi-Cosi Lora is - it's a lift-off bassinet that you can move around the home, and it's a blast too. It also has an incline for reflux and a machine washable liner that breathes. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. Unlike some International or European cot brands Lora is a cot that Lora can fit South African cot mattresses so you don't need to buy a new mattress as your baby grows. However, it requires a special bespoke bedding set (60x120cm). Find the ideal mattress for your cot here.

Height

When choosing a crib for your bed make sure it can be adjusted to the ideal height for you. It also needs to be able to be lowered down so that you can pull your baby up towards you for night feeds or to soothe. This feature is particularly helpful in the event of recovering from a C section. The Next2me cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to an maximum height of 58cm, while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm, and the Knuma Hutch to 70cm.

Another thing to consider is how low you want the base of your cot. While some mums find it easier to lift their children out of standard Moses baskets at the lowest level, some mothers prefer an elevated base to give them more stability. One of our mum testers mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It comes with an easy-to-fold side that you can press at the touch a button.

Be aware that a bedside or bassinet device should only be used when your baby is able to hold his head without assistance, which is typically at around 6 months. This is due to the possibility of inhaling suffocation. It's also important to know that if you opt for a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can convert into a cot it is necessary to remove the sides as soon as your child is able to do this to ensure that they don't get out of bed or get out of the bed.

Design

There are a variety of cribs for beds with a range of styles from simple to extravagant. Some of the most luxurious options include features such as an inbuilt light and a soothing center which plays music and sounds and has two levels that help to soothe your baby back to sleep. Another option is the swivelling footrest, which makes it easier for you to reach your child in order to feed them. Some models can be transformed into an infant bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.

For example, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that lets you pick up your newborn and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without having to get up. This makes it ideal for new mums who are recovering from Caesareans or who require a bed for longer durations of time. MFM mum home tester Jasmine loved this feature, saying that it was simple to use and made her baby easier particularly after her c-section.

bedside co sleeper is another alternative. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards to be the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib and has a machine-washable liner, reflux incline, and a rocking feature. It's bigger than the other bedside cribs that we tested, but it folds down into its bag for travel, making it compact when not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester also praised the bedside crib's functionality. She claimed that it was designed to be used by parents and babies. It is a fantastic design that is very simple to operate and is extremely durable. Its swivelling base is fantastic because it lets you move the bassinet side to side and one of its sides can be lowered down to facilitate access especially for new mothers who are recovering from their C-sections', she said.

Safety

A bedside cot that is large and spacious's most important safety characteristic is that it can be easily moved up or down so that parents can reach their child to feed or comfort them, or change his or her nappies. This makes it ideal for mothers who are still be recovering from a C-section. Choose a model that lets you lower one side with the press of a button. This way, you can easily lift your baby up without getting out of the bed. This is particularly important as your baby gets older and more mobile. Avoid adding anything that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation such as pillowcases and duvets which could cause your baby to become overheated.

The NPR of the CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR In its NPR, the CPSC considered the possibility of adding additional requirements for sleepers in bed, such as the requirement that they meet the minimum side height requirement for bassinets or at least meet the maximum height requirement for the side rail. However the CPSC determined that these requirements are not efficient or feasible to reduce the amount of instances in which infants were trapped between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed.

The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that could be converted into different modes like play yards and bassinets. Several commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multiuse bedside sleepers to enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement for bassinets through the use of an attachment that is removable and can be permanently connected or disconnected when the item is not being used as a bassinet.

The CPSC is currently examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR regarding bedside sleepers. The Commission will consider these comments when deciding on the final rule which is expected to be released in November of 2021.
