Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots, also referred as co-sleepers and bassinets, are designed to let parents sleep close to their infants at night without the risk of SIDS. However, they are only suitable for use up to 6 months of age when your baby is required to be moved into a cot, or a moses basket.
Mehack, a MFM home tester, was impressed by the fact that this model has an adjustable bassinet that can be used throughout the house. It also features the ability to rock manually. It was easy to assemble, and it came with a travel bag.
Size
Cots and cots differ in terms of size, with cots being smaller than cot beds. They also can be converted into toddler beds, whereas the cot beds are typically used until three years old. old. There are two sizes of wooden cots, large and standard, which can be transformed into a toddler bed or cot. If you'd like your child (or children) to be comfortable sleeping in a larger cot, it's a great idea to choose the larger size.
MFM mum home test Jasmine was pleased that this bedside cot was slightly bigger than a Moses basket, but not too large for her baby's room. She says that it is easy to get the baby into and out of the cot for night feedings or soothing, and that its quality is superior to others she has seen that are flimsy.
Emily, another home tester, is awed by the versatility of the Maxi-Cosi lora - it is a lift-off, mobile bassinet. It also rocks. It also has an incline for reflux and a machine washable liner that breathes. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. The Lora is compatible with a South African cot mattress unlike many international or European brands. bedside crib travel cot means that you don't have to purchase an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. It requires a specific bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the right mattress for your cot here.
Height
When selecting a cot for the bed be sure to choose one that can be raised to a height that's comfortable for you when feeding the baby. It should also be able to be dropped down so that you can lift your baby closer to you for feedings at night or to soothe. This feature is especially helpful if you're recovering from an operation such as a C-section. For instance, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to the height of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.
You should also consider the level you would like the bottom of your crib to be. While some mothers find it easier to lift their children out of the standard Moses baskets at the smallest level, some mothers prefer having a higher base that gives them more stability. One of our mum testers stated that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular option. It comes with an easy-to-fold side that you can push at the press of a button.
Remember that a bassinet/bedside sleeping device is only suitable until your baby can hold their head without assistance generally around 6 months. This is due to the danger of inhaling suffocation. It is also important to remember that if you select a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can convert into a cot, you will need to begin removing the sides once your child is able to do this to ensure they don't get out of bed or fall out of the bed.
Design
There are a variety of styles of bedside crib, ranging from simple to lavish. Some of the most luxurious options include features such as a built-in light and a soothing center which plays music and sounds and has two levels to help ease your baby back to sleep or the swivelling footrest, which makes it easier for you to reach your child in order to feed them. There are also models that can be converted to the form of a toddler bed or cot bed (or both), perfect when your child is ready to transition to a bigger bed.
For example, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that lets you take your baby and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get out of bed. This makes it perfect for new mothers who are recovering from Caesarean births or who need to stay in the bed for extended durations of time. MFM mum home tester Jasmine loved this feature, saying that it was simple to use and made reaching her baby much more manageable especially after a c-section.
Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib and has a machine-washable lining, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's a bit larger than the other cribs that we've tried, but it folds flat into its bag for travel, so it's quite compact when not in use.
Leya, MFM mum home tester Also, she acknowledged the crib's usefulness. She claimed that it was designed to be used by parents and children. It has a great design that is very maneuverable and is extremely durable. Its swivelling base is brilliant as it means you can move the bassinet from side to side and one of its sides can be let down to ease access especially for new mothers who are recovering from C-sections', she said.
Safety
The main safety aspect of a large bedside cot is that it can be raised or lowered to enable parents to reach their child when they require to feed, comfort them, or change their nappy. This is ideal for new mothers recovering from an c-section. It is recommended to choose an option that allows you to lower the bed's side by pressing a button. This will allow you to easily raise your child without having to get out of bed. This is especially important as your baby gets older and becomes more mobile. Do not add anything that may increase the chance of suffocation or injury, such as pillowcases and duvets which could cause your baby to become overheated.
The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product issues, such as gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents), fabric-sided enclosed openings (11) and consumer disassembly (6 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of adding additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance they would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at least the maximum height requirements for the rail that is lowered. However the CPSC found that these requirements are not feasible or effective to reduce the amount of instances in which infants were trapped between the bedside sleeper and an adult bed.
A majority of the incidents reported in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers that could be converted into other modes such as bassinets and play yards. Many commenters suggested that the CPSC include a different clause to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers with multiple uses which would permit them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that can be removed. Attachments can be permanently attached or removed when the item is not being used as a bassinet for babies.
The CPSC is examining these comments and others received in response to the NPR on bedside sleeping. The Commission will take into account these comments when deciding on the final rule that is expected to be published in November 2021.
