Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots, also known as co-sleepers and bassinets, are designed to let parents sleep close to their babies at night without the danger of SIDS. They are only recommended for up to 6 months, when your baby will be ready to transition to the cot.
MFM home tester Mehack was impressed that this model features a lift-off bassinet you can use in the home and a manual rocking function. It was also easy to put together and came with its own bag for easy storage.
Size
Cots are smaller than cots. They are smaller than. They also can be converted into toddler beds, while the cot beds are typically used for up to three years. old. If you're considering a wooden cot, there are typically two sizes to choose from that are large and standard both of which convert into a cot/toddler beds. The larger one is a good option if you want your child to sleep in it until the age of +/- three.
Jasmine, an MFM mum who tested the product at home, said she liked the fact that it was a little bigger than the typical Moses' basket but still not too large for the baby's room. She claims that it is easy to get the baby into and out of the cot during evening feedings or to soothe, and that its quality is better than other cots she has seen that are flimsy.
Another home test subject, Emily, likes how versatile the Maxi-Cosi Lora is It's a bassinet that lifts off that you can move around the house, and it rocks too. It also has a reflux incline option and a machine-washable breathable liner. And it was shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the Best Cot Crib, Crib or Moses Basket. The Lora is a perfect fit for a South African cot mattress unlike other international or European brands. This means you do not need to purchase an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. It does require a special bedding set (60x120cm). Here is the ideal mattress for your cot.

When you are choosing a crib that is bedside make sure it can be adjusted to a comfortable height for you. It must also be able to be lowered down so that you can lift your baby up towards you during night feedings or soothing. This is particularly useful when you are recovering from a C-section. For example the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to the height of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma huddle up to 70cm.
Another thing to consider is how low you want the cot's base to be. Some mums find that it is easier to lift their infants from standard Moses baskets when the base is situated at the lowest level and others prefer a higher level to provide them with more stability. One of our mom testers mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It is a collapsible side which you can use to push of the button.
Remember that a bedside or bassinet is only suitable until your baby is able to hold their head up without assistance, usually at around 6 months. This is because of the possibility of inhaling suffocation. It's also important to note that if you choose a bedside or bassinet which can convert into a cot it is necessary to begin removing the sides once your child is ready for this, so that they don't climb out or get out of bed.
Design
There are many different styles of cribs for bedside use that range from basic to luxurious. Some of the more extravagant options include features like an integrated light and a soothing center that plays music and sound and has two levels to help ease your baby back to sleep or the swivelling footrest, which allows you to reach your child when you need to feed them. Certain models can be converted into a toddler bed or cot bed (or both) when your child is ready for their own bed.
For instance, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards for the Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket category, has an adjustable base that allows you to pick up your baby and move them from one side of the crib to the other without having to get up. This makes it perfect for new mums who are recovering from Caesarean or require a bed for longer durations of time. Jasmine, a MFM mother who tested the product at home, said it was easy to operate and made it easier to reach her baby, especially after the c-section.
Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It has a machine-washable liner, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's larger than other cribs for bed that we've tested, but it folds up into its bag for travel, making it a small size when not in use.
Leya, MFM mum home tester also praised the bedside crib's functionality. She claimed that it was designed to be used by parents and babies. travel cot bedside has a great design that is extremely simple to operate and is extremely sturdy. She also said that the bassinet's pivoting base was brilliant because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to facilitate access for moms who are recovering from c-sections.
Safety
The bedside cot's primary security characteristic is that it can easily be raised or lowered so parents can reach their child to feed or comfort them, or change his or her nappy. This makes it ideal for mothers who are still recovering from a C-section. Choose a model that allows you to lower one side with the push of a button. This way, you can easily lift your baby up without needing to get out of bed. This is particularly crucial as your baby grows older and more mobile. You should also avoid adding anything to the crib that could increase the chance of suffocation or injury, including duvets and pillows, which can cause babies to overheat.
The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product issues that include gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance, these products would have to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements were not practical or effective in reducing the number of incidents where infants are trapped by a bedside rail and an adult bed.
A majority of the incidents mentioned in the NPR included multi-use bedside beds that can be transformed into other types of equipment, like play yards or bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule a different provision for multiuse bedside sleepers to allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirement for bassinets by using a removable attachment that can be permanently connected or disconnected when the product is not being used as an actual bassinet.
The CPSC is reviewing these comments as well as other submissions received in response to the NPR regarding bedside sleeping. The Commission will consider these comments when it votes on the final rule, which is expected to be released in November of 2021.
