Bedside Crib and Travel Cot
Bedside cribs are a type of cot that fixes to the side of your bed. They often have a single side that can be dropped down for easy access and some even have an incline option that is ideal for babies with reflux.
MFM tester Georgina said that the crib was simple to put together and the directions were very easy to follow. It was a fast construction. It also folds down to the size of a small bag and comes with a convenient bag for traveling.
Easy to assemble
They are small and simple to set up, meaning they can be set near your bed. They are also lighter, making them more transportable. Georgina, who was one of MFM's home testers said that the Maxi-Cosi Lora was "super easy to put together, with clear instructions and simple zips." This crib can be used as a portable crib, and it comes with a convenient bag. It comes with multiple mesh openings for ventilation and its height adjustable allows it to be adapted to any mattress.
Some cribs with a bedside have the option of a side panel that could be lowered, giving you the ability to be close to your baby without having to get out of your bed. This is an excellent option for mothers who are breastfeeding, or those who wish to remain close to their child throughout the night but don't wish to risk co-sleeping.
The majority of models have a built-in rocking function. This can be a very relaxing experience for your baby, and can help them fall asleep. Some cribs have a recline position that can be beneficial in the case of reflux or colic. This position is best used under supervision. You should consult a doctor or health visitor before attempting it.
A lot of bedside cribs have a canopy over them to shield your baby from light and sound, which can be helpful in keeping them calm. Some have storage compartments underneath, which is great to store blankets, nappies, and other items for your baby.
Some cribs that are bedside can be transformed into standalone cots, or toddler beds, and this is often an attractive selling feature for families. MFM's 2021 Mother&Baby Awards winner the Joie Roomie Go is a prime example. It has side panels that can be removed with conversion kits, as well as a tummy tilt, making it a versatile travel bed. It also has 5 different height adjustments to match your bed, and was praised by our MFM home testers for its ease of put together as well as comfortable and compact. The Graco Play Yard (also called as the pack and play) is another favorite, and was shortlisted in the 2022 Mother&Baby Awards.
Cosy and comfortable
You can watch your child from the peace of your bed by using a crib that is placed at your bedside. It's the ideal solution for a mom who is recovering from a c-section, because you can easily pull baby up to you to feed them or make nappy changes without needing to get up. The most comfortable cribs come with mesh sides that allow you to view your baby's face through.
Some cribs allow you to lower the barrier completely. This allows you to co-sleep with no risk. (Make sure that the model chosen meets the current safety requirements). Certain cribs let you lower the barrier, but lift it back up after you have lifted the baby out. This is ideal for parents with concerns about their child rolling off their mattress.
The Luah is the winner of the Mother&Baby Awards Best Cot, or Moses Basket in 2021, is designed to clip on to bedsteads and divans but requires longer straps (check your specs to make sure that your bed is able to accommodate). The large design has an opening side panel, and a patented perforated bottom that creates air cushioning that increases air flow. There's an integrated setting for reflux, and a 360-degree swivel to allow you to turn the crib to suit your baby's preferred position.
If you are seeking something smaller Tutti Bambini CoZee comes with oak legs and a range of fabric options that fit in with your decor. It's also incredibly easy to put together as Georgina, who took part in our MFM tests, put it together speedily and didn't have to look up the instructions. It's also a good travel cot that folds flat and slipping into a handy bag.
The Next2me Magic, which was shortlisted for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, is also somewhat larger, but is still relatively compact and easy to attach to your bed. Georgina found it straightforward to put together, however she was not convinced that the zips could have been more clearly explained on the instruction sheet.
Easy to clean
If bedside cosleeper considering travel cots and bedside cribs, look for ones that have a mattress cover that is removable that is machine-washable. This will help keep it clean from spills, nappies, infant sick and spills. It's also a good idea to select a model that is easily disassembled and partially dismantled, so that you can access all the corners and crevices to conduct an extensive cleaning and sanitising session.
This is vital, since it will ensure that all dirt and germs have been eliminated. Also, you should ensure that the sides of the crib are securely attached, so there are no gaps or spaces that your child could fall down or get trapped.
You'll also need to ensure that the crib is easy to clean and it fits with your bed. This is especially crucial when you're using a co-sleeping bedside crib. These cribs are designed to be tethered securely to the parent's side, giving parents to easily access to their infant throughout the night to feed and comfort their baby while still ensuring the safety that separate sleeping surfaces provide.
Another thing to consider when selecting a crib for your bed is whether it comes with extra features you might find useful. For example, some have the ability to rock (useful for sleepers who are fussy) or tilt - although be aware that you should only use this feature with care, as it can be dangerous if your child is thrown out.
You'll need to ensure that your crib or travel bed has a flat, firm mattress that is snugly fitted into the frame. This will decrease the chance of SIDS by ensuring that your baby's head and feet do not slide into gaps or folds in the bedding.
It's also a good idea to buy a new mattress for your crib or travel cot, rather than using one that was passed down from someone else or purchased second-hand. Mattresses that have been used are more susceptible to lose their shape with time and increase the risk of SIDS. All new cribs must meet BS EN1130:2019. This is the latest standard, which introduces more stringent requirements to ensure secure and efficient sleep solutions.
Multi-faceted
A bedside crib (or co-sleeping crib as they're often referred to) can be attached to your bed, allowing you to easily reach your baby at night without having to get out of your sleeping space. They can also be used as a separate crib in the daytime. Most have a side panel which can be removed to let you be able to see your baby and hold him. Some cribs allow you to put the side panel down at night. This allows you to be close and convenient with your baby, while minimizing the risks of sharing the bed. Some cribs can be converted into a travel cot, or have extra features like rocking, tilting (use with caution, be sure to speak to your GP about this) or even turning into a baby cot for older children or playpen.
The SnuzPod 4 crib is popular for a variety of reasons, not just due to its sleek design in Scandi. This crib comes with six height settings as well as a handy shelf for storage. It's also a little larger and heavier than some of our cribs that are more suitable for travel and comes in a handy bag to keep it dust-free and clean when stored.
The instructions are simple and there's a useful toolkit to aid you. It's also easy to clean using an easy-to-clean mattress cover and air-tight fabric. It has a few more amenities than other cribs we've used, such as an anti-reflux incline, rocking function, and a storage pocket.
Jasmin says that this is an excellent crib due to its "easy to reach your baby during the night to feed him without fuss and is larger than the majority of Moses baskets, which means it will last longer before my son is out of it". She also loves that it's easy to clean and feels sturdy and well-made. It can be positioned on a divan, making it a great choice for those with a little space. It also comes with a handy carry bag to take with you when you're traveling. A perfect all-rounder.
