Here, we demonstrate that transcriptomic gradients along the longitudinal root axis associate with specific shifts in rhizosphere microbial diversity. Moreover, we have established that root-derived flavones predominantly promote the enrichment of bacteria of the taxa Oxalobacteraceae in the rhizosphere, which in turn promote maize growth and nitrogen acquisition. Genetic experiments demonstrate that LRT1-mediated lateral root development coordinates the interactions of the root system with flavone-dependent Oxalobacteraceae under nitrogen deprivation. In summary, these experiments reveal the genetic basis of the reciprocal interactions between root architecture and the composition and diversity of specific microbial taxa in the rhizosphere resulting in improved plant performance. These findings may open new avenues towards the breeding of high-yielding and nutrient-efficient crops by exploiting their interaction with beneficial soil microorganisms.
To categorize visual field (VF) defects according to Freitag and Tanking's (FT) classification in Thyroid Eye Disease-Compressive Optic Neuropathy (TED-CON) and evaluate the interreader agreement and intrareader reproducibility of the classification.
In this retrospective, observational study we included medical reports of 96 eyes (51 patients), who underwent VF testing with TED-CON in Ludwig-Maximilians-University (2008-2019). Two readers separately examined the VFs at the time of the TED-CON diagnosis, each offering two readings of the same VF in a time interval of 1 month. None of our patients were diagnosed with only VF testing. Danicopan The visual field testing was only performed when the inclusion criteria for TED-CON were met.
The most common VF defects upon TED-CON diagnosis were stage 1b defects in FT classification (34.4% for reader 1, 35.4% for reader 2), followed by stage 2b (10.4% for reader 1, 14.6% for reader 2), and stage 3 (10.4% for both readers). The overall interreader agreement between 2 exae inferior region (stage 1a/1b in the FT classification) even in patients with a good BCVA.
Local Optometric Support Unit (LOCSU) have published their refreshed clinical pathway for eye care for people with a learning disability. The document sets out the adjustments to practice that a community optometrist might make in order to provide optimal care for a person with learning disability attending a primary eye care assessment. The pathway specifically points to the need to retain patients in primary care where appropriate and 'reduce the number of people with learning disability who are inappropriately referred into the Hospital Eye Service (HES).' Pivotal to this refreshed pathway is the integration with secondary care, with local arrangements to facilitate referral and hospital management where appropriate. There are few ophthalmologists nationally who frequently encounter patients with a learning disability in their hospital practice and knowing where to start when creating referral criteria or KPIs may create a barrier to services becoming established. To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and swept-source optical coherence tomographic angiography (SS-OCTA) to identify polypoidal lesions in serous or serosanguinous maculopathy.
A retrospective review of patients presenting pigment epithelial detachments (PEDs) with the diagnosis of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), all of which underwent SD-OCT, SS-OCTA, and indocyanine green angiography (ICGA). Typical features of polypoidal lesions on SD-OCT included sharply peaked PED, notched PED, and hyperreflective ring underneath PED. SS-OCTA feature was vascularized PEDs on cross-sectional images corresponding to cluster-like structures on en face images. The parameters of PEDs were measured for analysis.
Of 72 eyes, 30 had PCV, 22 had nAMD, and 20 had CSC. A total of 128 localized PEDs were detected on SD-OCT. Typical features on SD-OCT had a high specificity (94.0%) but a limited sensitivity (73.8%). SS-OCTA features provided a higher sensitivity (96.7%). PEDs of the polypoidal lesions unrecognized by SD-OCT were dome-shaped, with smaller ratio of height to base diameter and less area, and almost had heterogeneous internal reflectivity and a connected double-layer sign. Some lesions misidentified by SS-OCTA developed into ICGA-proven polypoidal lesions at follow-up visits.
A small dome-shaped PED with heterogeneous internal reflectivity and a connected double-layer sign on SD-OCT may suggest a polypoidal lesion of PCV. SS-OCTA may be a helpful tool to investigate preclinical PCV and observe the formation of polypoidal lesions.
