Our results indicated that diagnosis of ID based on isolated TSAT <20% identifies HF patients with worse prognosis, while ferritin was not associated with mortality risk, suggesting that ferritin should not be taken into account for evaluation of clinical impact of ID in HF patients.

Nutritional choices, which include dietary fatty acids (FA), vitamins and sugars, have an important significant impact on the development of atheromatic index levels. Controversial opinions exist in the literature regarding the role of different fat types and their association with atheromatic index. We investigated the relationship between dietary intake with different atheromatic index groups of volunteer regular blood donors (rBDs) recognizing them as a healthy population excluding drug and supplements intake and we correlated their values with serum total antioxidant status (sTAS).

150 individuals used in this study were divided in 3 groups according to their atheromatic index (AI=Total cholesterol/HDL) (AI) Group 1 (AI<3.5) comprised of 50 rBDs, Group 2 (AI 3.5-4.49) of 52 rBDs and Group 3 of 48 rBDs (AI>4.5). Dietary intake was assessed using the 3 day food recall and the Food Processor, computer program for nutrient analysis. sTAS was measured in all samples and correlated with atheromatic inntrol.
The results of the present study showed that dietary intake of different types of fatty acids should be used separately as atheromatic index predictors. Moreover, sTAS is correlated with dietary intake of SFA, MUFA, PUFA, Cholesterol, Trans FA and sugar. Finally, the measurement of each fatty acid would be of great value for the screening of lipid metabolism disorders in atheromatic index control.
Computed tomography-based measures of body composition are emerging as important prognostic factors for patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between total skeletal muscle index (SMI), psoas muscle index (PMI) and clinical outcomes in patients with operable CRC.

A retrospective cohort study of prospectively maintained database at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. CT image at L3 was carried out to assess total skeletal and psoas muscle areas and these were normalized for height squared to calculate SMI and PMI respectively. Patients were classified into high and low groups using calculated optimal thresholds and their relationship to clinical outcomes was studied using logistic regression analysis.

Of the 1002 patients included, 55% were male, 50% had low SMI and 42% had low PMI. A moderate correlation was found between total skeletal muscle and psoas areas (r
=0.70, p<0.001). On univariate analysis, low SMI was associated with length of hospital stay (OR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.15-1.89, p=0.002) and overall survival (HR, 2.29; 95% CI, 1.47-3.58, p<0.001). On multivariate analysis, low SMI was independently associated with length of hospital stay (HR 1.32; 95% CI, 1.02-1.70, p<0.05). On univariate analysis, low PMI was associated with length of hospital stay (OR, 1.34; 95% CI, 1.04-1.73, p<0.05) and overall survival (OR, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.10-1.86 p<0.01). On multivariate analysis, low PMI was not independently significant.

The present study shows that though both total skeletal muscle index and psoas muscle index were directly associated and had prognostic value, total skeletal muscle index had independent prognostic value in patients with operable CRC.

It is associated with increased risk of several diseases. The importance of early life strategies in the prevention of obesity is well established, whereas, in general, breastfed infants tend to have a lower body mass index (BMI) than formula-fed infants. There seem to be a series of behavioral and hormonal mechanisms that explain this difference. Lifestyle plays a crucial role in the development of overweight and/or obesity and targeted lifestyle modifications have an important impact on preventing obesity. In particular, sedentary behavior (viewing television, playing video games, doing cognitive work, and listening to music) and reduced overall physical activity along with shorter sleep duration promote the overconsumption of dietary macronutrients leading to obesity; at the same time physical activity or exercise in a sufficient dose seems to better facilitate long-term maintenance of new lower body weight. There is enough discussion about a potential effect of nutrients on obesity. Nevertheless, the most the crucial parameter regarding weight loss and prevention of obesity is to achieve a negative energy balance. In regard to specific diet regimes, again energy balance rather that any specific macronutrients composition and/or favoring of low glycemic index products, seems to be have a stronger effect on maintenance of lower weight after 12 months. It has to be noted, that for specific sup groups, obesity or overweight might be showing some favorable trends in survival. In particular, "obesity paradox" (OP) refers to an overall prognosis that is no worse and may even be better in some groups than non-obese patients. The OP could be explained by the fact that current classifications of obesity based on BMI may place together, in the same category, subjects with very different clinical and biochemical characteristics.
Older people with hip fractures are often undernourished, which adversely affects their functional prognosis. A previous review reported that oral multinutritional supplements may prevent complications after hip fracture surgery. However, it is unclear whether interventions that combine rehabilitation and nutritional therapy have prognostic benefits. The objective of this study was to determine whether nutritional therapy is effective for patients with hip fractures undergoing rehabilitation.

Systematic literature review and meta-analysis.

Randomized controlled trials involving patients at least 65years of age with hip fracture undergoing rehabilitation with or without nutritional therapy. GDC-0077 supplier Older patients with hip fractures undergoing rehabilitation were included.

A systematic literature search using 5 databases (PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, WHO ICTRP, and Ichu-shi Web) was conducted in December 2018 and identified all randomized controlled trials. Outcome variables include mortality, complications, activities of daily living, quality of life, and muscle strength.
