Oxytetracycline, monensin, and sulfamethoxazole had intermediate TF values of 0.36-0.64, whereas lincomycin had the highest TF value of 1.46. This study showed significant differences between RCFbs and RCFrs values, suggesting the need to reassess the utility of RCFbs in predicting the antibiotic root uptake in diverse soil-plant systems. This work assessed the effect of the antibiotics trimethoprim (TMP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on the granulation process, microbiology, and organic matter and nutrient removal of an aerobic granular sludge (AGS) system. In addition, after the maturation stage, the impact of the redox mediator anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) (25 μM) on the biotransformation of the antibiotics was evaluated. The reactor R1 was maintained as a control, and the reactor R2 was supplemented with TMP and SMX (200 μg L-1). The ability to remove C, N, and P was similar between the reactors. However, the structural integrity of the AGS was impaired by the antibiotics. Low TMP (∼30%) and SMX (∼60%) removals were achieved when compared to anaerobic or floccular biomass aerobic systems. However, when the system was supplemented with AQDS, an increase in the removal of TMP (∼75%) and SMX (∼95%) was observed, possibly due to the catalytic action of the redox mediator on cometabolic processes. Regarding the microbial groups, whereas Proteobacteria and Bacterioidetes increased, Planctomycetes decreased in both reactors. However, TMP and SMX presence seemed to inhibit or favor some genera during the formation of the granules, possibly due to their bactericidal action.Porcine Kobuvirus (PKV) infection is very common in pigs throughout the world. Since it has never been investigated in Serbia, to contribute to the knowledge of Porcine Kobuvirus, its role, and distribution, we tested 200 samples from domestic pigs and wild boars. From domestic pigs, 10 fecal, 22 spleen and 68 serum samples, and 100 spleen samples from wild boars were tested. The virus prevalence determined by real-time RT-PCR in domestic pigs was 22% and in wild boars 6%. The phylogenetic analysis of 3D region revealed that Serbian strains are closest related to the Hungarian strain from wild boar from 2011. This is the first report on PKV in Serbia in domestic pigs and wild boars, implying its wide circulation. Although the infection could not be directly related to any clinical manifestation, the frequency of virus found in feces suggests viral affinity to the gastrointestinal tract. However, due to the rather ubiquitous presence of PKV, the clinical and pathological assessment have to be considered when PKV infection is diagnosed.Salmonellosis is the second most prevalent zoonosis in Europe and it has considerable economic and health implications for its monitoring and control as well as being among the most prevalent pathogens on livestock farms. selleck chemicals The wild boar (Sus scrofa) has been identified as a competent host and spreader of Salmonella spp. There has been a significant increase in wild boar population in Europe in recent decades, and it is even present in urban areas. This study evaluates the spatial distribution of the seroprevalence of Salmonella spp. in wild boar from Murcia (Southeast Spain) and its relationship with host-related risk factors (sex, age, location and density). The presence of antibodies against S. Typhimurium and Choleraesuis in 269 serum of wild boars hunted in Murcia between 2015 and 2019 were analyzed using a commercial ELISA test (PrioCHECK porcine Salmonella kit). The seroprevalence were spatially distributed using Kernel function, and wild boar density using Gaussian kernel estimates (spatialEco version 1.1.1). The risk function was estimated as the ratio between the intensity of positive samples and the wild boar density The overall seroprevalence was 19.3% (IC95% 16.9-21.8), showing a significant spatial aggregation. The highest seroprevalence detected was 51.8% (IC95% 42.2-61.5) in a specific area with high risk of infection (76-100%) and was related to the wild boar density. Only marginal differences were detected for sex and age. The use of ELISA combined with QGIS (version 3.6.0) has allowed the identification of areas of Salmonella occurrence associated with high density as risk factor.Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used as antimicrobial agents and resulted in their accumulation in environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the detailed molecular mechanisms underlying AgNP-induced lung cellular senescence which has been proposed as a pathogenic driver of chronic lung disease. Herein, we demonstrate that exposure to AgNPs elevates multiple senescence biomarkers in lung cells, with cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase, and potently activates genes of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) in human fetal lung fibroblast cell line MRC5. Fluorescence-based assay also reveals that apoptosis induced by AgNPs is associated with senescence. Furthermore, we show that AgNPs cause premature senescence through an increase in transcription factor nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) expression and over-production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in lung cells. Inhibition of COX2 reduces AgNPs-induced senescence to a normal level. Moreover, AgNPs also induce upregulation of COX2 and accelerate lung cellular senescence in vivo and cause mild fibrosis in the lung tissue of mice. Taken together, our studies support a critical role of AgNPs in the induction of lung cellular senescence via the upregulation of the COX2/PGE2 intracrine pathway, and suggest the adverse effects to the human respiratory system.Strontium (Sr) is an emerging environmental pollutant that has become a major global concern after the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011. Although many studies have demonstrated the harmful effects of Sr on plant growth and development at the physiological level, knowledge regarding how plants sense and respond to Sr stress at the molecular level is limited. Recent studies have suggested that microRNAs (miRNAs) function as key regulators of plant growth and development as well as in the responses of plants to environmental stresses, including salinity, drought, cold, nutrient starvation, and heavy metals. In this study, we examined the global expression profile of miRNAs under Sr stress using small RNA sequencing analysis in Arabidopsis to better understand the molecular basis of plant responses to Sr stress. To identify specific Sr-responsive miRNAs, we performed comparative miRNA expression profiling analysis using control, CaCl2-, and SrCl2-treated seedlings. Compared to the control treatment, the expressions of most miRNAs were considerably decreased in the Sr-treated seedlings.
