Two lab-scale sequential reactors were used in this study, namely EBPR-SN and Anammox sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). Long-term operation suggested that ammonium oxidizing bacteria abundance decreased from 1.67% to 0.89% whereas nitrite oxidizing bacteria decreased to nearly undetected in the EBPR-SN SBR, maintaining the stable nitritation (nitrite accumulation ratio 98.3 ± 1.0%). Lowering airflow rate was effective to retain nitritation with temperature decrease. Reliable nutrient removal was still maintained in winter (16.4 ± 0.7 °C), i.e. the removal efficiencies for nitrogen and phosphorus were 80.0 ± 3.5% and 95.4 ± 5.2%, respectively, with short aerobic HRT (6.4 h) and low dissolved oxygen (0.2-1.5 mg/L). The percentage of anammox contribution to nitrogen-removal increased with temperature decrease, although Candidatus Brocadia abundance decreased. Additionally, the protection of extracellular polymeric substances was important to the successful performance.The highly complex microbial communities in biofilm play crucial roles in the pollutant removal performance of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In the present study, using multi-omics analysis, we studied microbial structure, key enzymes, functional traits, and key metabolic pathways of pre-denitrification biofilter in an urban WWTP in China. The analysis results of metagenomic and metaproteomic showed that Betaproteobacteria and Flavobacteriia were dominant in biofilms. The integrated metagenomic and metaproteomic data showed that the expression of nitrogen metabolism genes was high, and the high proportion of denitrification module indicating that denitrification was the main nitrogen removal pathway. The most abundant denitrifying bacterial genera were Dechloromonas, Acidovorax, Bosea, Polaromonas, and Chryseobacterium. And microorganisms with denitrification potential may not be able to denitrify in the actual operation of the filter. The integrated analysis of metaproteomic and metabolomic showed that there was a correlation between biofilm microorganisms and metabolites. Here, we investigate the surface properties of a nano-TiO2 coated polyethylene (PE) film as influenced by photocatalytic aging process using an atomic force microscopy coupled with infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) technique. Results showed that the height range of the as-prepared samples was about 30 nm, and the equivalent diameter of nano-TiO2 was ~70 nm. The photo-induced oxidation of the CH2 bond occurred on the surface of the PE film. Photo-aging mainly affected the thermal properties of PE film in a local area, especially affecting the components surrounding the nano-TiO2 particle. The glass transition temperature of unaged PE film mainly changed in the range of 93.9-96.5 °C, but after aging the temperature gradually increased with the distance to nano-TiO2 increasing from near to far. The plastic film surrounding the nano-TiO2 particle became stiffer after photo-aging, and the photocatalytic reaction had an effect on the stiffness of the film material. The second characteristic peaks with resonance deviations (i.e., 110, 112, and 115 kHz) were used for Lorentz contact resonance (LCR) measurements. The mechanical properties of PE film after photo-aging were closely related to the distance between nano-TiO2 and film surface. These research findings are conducive for us to understand better the photo-induced aging process of functional plastic film.Coralline algae are worldwide carbonate builders, considered to be foundational species and biodiversity hotspots. Coralline habitats face increasing pressure from human activities and effects related to Global Change, yet their ecological properties and adaptive responses remain poorly understood. The relationships of the algal microbiota with the mineral bioconstructions, as well as plasticity and resilience of coralline holobionts in a changing environment, are of particular interest. In the Gulf of California, Neogoniolithon trichotomum (Rhodophyta) is the main carbonate builder in tidal pools. We performed a multi-disciplinary assessment of the N. trichotomum microstructure using XRD, SEM microscopy and SR-FTIR spectromicroscopy. In the algal perithallus, magnesium-calcite and aragonite were spatially segregated and embedded in a polysaccharide matrix (rich in sulfated polysaccharides). Mg-calcites (18-19 mol% Mg) were the main mineral components of the thallus overall, followed by iron carbonates relatese of their carbonates with potential resistance to dissolution in a higher pCO2 world and their seasonally dynamic bacteria, coralline algae are relevant targets to study coastal resilience and carbonated systems responses to changing environments.
