erformance and productivity parameters of calves. However, the evidence is weak for other potential probiotic uses in calves such as improved health and reduced risk of disease. Therefore, the existing data are inconclusive and do not support the use of probiotics as an alternative to antimicrobials to improve calf health and productivity. This article problematises the ways in which behavioural change by poor individuals dominates the global discussions on means to tackle issues caused by systemic problems. We do so by focusing on the case of animal diseases, a symptom of many systematic failures. While livestock farming has long been praised as a mitigating factor against poverty, livestock diseases threaten the lives and livelihoods of poor and marginalised people who depend on animals. Aiming at controlling animal diseases, policy makers tend to focus on behavioural change by individual farmers by enhancing their knowledge. We conducted an in-depth qualitative research among pig farmers in Myanmar, a country that is rapidly increasing livestock production, to document contextual and systematic constraints that influence farmers' understandings and perceptions of disease-related risks and household-level decisions to invest in animal disease control. We conducted in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and participant observation in three townships in the Yangon region. Structural constraints such as weak veterinary health system and limited access to low-interest credit prevent farmers from gaining necessary knowledge about disease prevention and make them economically vulnerable. These systematic constraints drive behaviours considered 'risky' for disease emergence and spread. As a result, many small- and medium-scale farmers in low- and middle-income countries remain trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty and ill health for both animals and humans. We conclude that, instead of focusing on individual behavioural change, interventions need to combine enhancing knowledge by individual farmers and tackling economic and structural constraints that limit their agency and ability to address practices that are considered risky.Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly transmissible viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals, which is endemic in many developing countries. Vaccination is the main tool for FMD control in resource limited endemic countries like Ethiopia. Vaccine quality, which is often questionable in developing countries, is a critical element for effective disease control. The present study was aimed at evaluating the field effectiveness of a trivalent FMD vaccine (containing serotypes O, A and SAT 2), produced and widely used in Ethiopia, in terms of preventing clinical infection and severe disease. A randomized controlled field trial design was employed in the study in which the attack rate of clinical FMD infection in vaccinated cattle was compared with the attack rate in unvaccinated controls in cattle population of 16 villages in Gondar Zuria district, Northwest Ethiopia. The vaccine was administered as a single dose course in the face of an impending FMD outbreak and the trial groups were monitored for clinical infeinical disease and severity between vaccinated and unvaccinated cattle, it might still be worth using the current vaccine to reduce production losses associated with the disease provided it is cost effective and affordable for the farmers. Factors that cause low effectiveness of the vaccine need to be identified and addressed for effective control of the disease at population level. This study evaluated the effect of porcine plasma hydrolysates (PPH) on the physicochemical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of emulsion-type pork sausages. Five levels of PPH were added to sausages (CON, 0 g/kg; T1, 5 g/kg; T2, 10 g/kg; T3, 15 g/kg; and T4, 20 g/kg) and their chemical composition, purge loss, lipid oxidation, microbial count, pH, color, texture, and sensory properties were compared on day 1 and after 4 weeks of cold storage. At 4 weeks of storage, hardness, cohesiveness, and gumminess were highest in T3 (P 0.05). The total aerobic plate count was the lowest in T4 at week 4 (P less then 0.05). Therefore, PPH addition could improve the texture of the emulsion-type pork sausages, and an antimicrobial effect was expected following exposure to at least 20 g/kg PPH.Within the domain of psychology, Optimal Experimental Design (OED) principles have been used to model how people seek and evaluate information. Despite proving valuable as computational-level methods to account for people's behaviour, their descriptive and explanatory powers remain largely unexplored. see more In a series of experiments, we used a naturalistic crime investigation scenario to examine how people evaluate queries, as well as outcomes, in probabilistic contexts. We aimed to uncover the psychological strategies that people use, not just to assess whether they deviated from OED principles. In addition, we explored the adaptiveness of the identified strategies across both one-shot and stepwise information search tasks. We found that people do not always evaluate queries strictly in OED terms and use distinct strategies, such as by identifying a leading contender at the outset. Moreover, we identified aspects of zero-sum thinking and risk aversion that interact with people's information search strategies. Our findings have implications for building a descriptive account of information seeking and evaluation, accounting for factors that currently lie outside the realm of information-theoretic OED measures, such as context and the learner's own preferences. For the first time, vanadium of biological origin, extracted from centrifugal fraction of vanadium-storing blood cells of the Ascidia sydneiensis samea species, was characterized as regards its isotopic composition and content of natural radioactive elements potassium (K), thorium (Th) and uranium (U). The natural abundance of vanadium isotopes has been confirmed with high accuracy, thus excluding a possible selectivity within bio-chemical reactions of vanadium concentration in blood cells from seawater. A large potassium concentration (up to 5500 × 10-6 g g-1) was found in the blood cell samples. The concentration of thorium was determined to be about 30 × 10-9 g g-1, while the uranium concentration was about 150 × 10-9 g g-1. Hence, a highly efficient two-stage purification approach with a total vanadium recovery of better than 70% was developed and applied. The final concentrations of K less then 100 × 10-6 g g-1 and of U/Th less then 0.5 × 10-9 g g-1 in the purified vanadium-containing samples were achieved.
