Dual Fuel Range Cooker With 13amp Plug
Are you a home cook who appreciates the convenience of gas cooktops but needs an oven to bake in? Find a dual fuel cooker that has the best of both worlds.
Many experienced home chefs prefer gas cooktops due to their superior temperature control and ability to utilize sophisticated cooking techniques, such as charcoaling. These powerful stoves can be costly particularly if they need an additional gas connection and an electrician for installation.
What is a 13amp outlet?
If you have a dual fuel range cooker (also called an electric and gas oven) then you'll require an appropriate 13 amp plug. The plug will also need to be wired in the cooker circuit using a qualified electrician.
This assures that the current that flows through the plug is safe and not too high, which could result in an electrical fire danger. The plug is equipped with a fuse that controls the current. The fuse goes out as soon as the current is beyond its capacity, which protects the appliance from overload of electricity.
The fuse is listed at 13 amps as indicated on the top of the plug. it indicates the maximum current that the plug can pass without causing damage to the appliance or overheating the socket. When replacing fuses, it's crucial to use the same amp rating as the original. There is a risk of overheating a socket if you replace a fuse with a different rating.
Ceramic 13 amp fuse are extremely durable, and can withstand high temperatures from the range cooker. Ceramic elements are also resistant to fire and is therefore a better option than other types.
There are several ways in which a 13 amp plug could be fitted. It could be wired to an existing live socket. the flex then connected to this by either a screw or a jaw type cord clamp. The plug must be put in place with a firm push and then tightened, making sure that the cord clamp is secure.
Before connecting the wires, you may have to remove the wiring diagram on cardboard that is positioned on top of the pins on some plugs. The wires must be trimmed to the correct length, as if they are too long, they could be crushed when the plug covers are replaced. The earth wire must be the longest one to ensure it is connected prior to the neutral and line pins.
How do I install an outlet with 13amps?
The vast majority of dual fuel range cookers in the UK are wired to 13 amp plug sockets and this is vital as ovens can draw a considerable amount of current, and standard plug sockets are only capable of 10 amps.
In general new appliances must have a plug installed at the point-of-sale. This is to ensure compliance with the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety Regulations) 1994. However, older appliances may not be connected to an outlet and that is the reason why the problem occurs.
The first step to take when connecting a cooker with an existing plug socket is to ensure that the fuse rating of the fuse box is similar to that of the plug. This is important because an incorrectly-sized fuse can be dangerous.
It is also recommended to ensure that the fuse is fully seated into the cartridge, and that there is no excessive movement. The next step is to prepare the flex to be used. Remove the sheathing to reveal the three conductors insulated. Next nick the sheathing at the entry point to the plug (beyond the cord grip) using a utility knife, without piercing the individual conductors. The nick should be wide enough to allow for the cable and sheathing to separate as the sheathing is pulled back. Finally cut off the excess sheathing, leaving about 40mm over the flexing end.
The flex is placed over the plug with the earth terminal on the top and the live and neutral terminals on the bottom. The sheathing around each pin is removed using conductors in the colour of the wire as a guide. The internal cable is then fixed to the terminal with the help of the cord grip. If the plug has an attached cord clamp that is screw-type, loosen it and then pull the insulation back to expose the copper wires. Connect each wire that is insulated to the correct terminal by using the plug's channel. Start with the earth conductor first, then the neutral and finally the live.
What is the maximum current draw of a plug with 13amps?
The maximum power draw of an 13amp plug is 3kw at 230 volts. This is a lot of power, but the standard fuse fitted in the UK plug will not fail until the cable is heated to a dangerous level. A faulty plug or socket may cause a fire so it's vital to be vigilant about how much power you use, especially in the kitchen.
The fuse inside the plugtops are made of ceramic, around 25mm long and rated 240V mains. They'll be marked with an BS kitemark or similar mark on the side and contain sand. There are plastic or glass alternatives but they shouldn't be used with a live plug, unless you want to blow up the fuse and possibly be electrocuted!
Most dual fuel range cookers sold in the UK need to be hard-wired and are not able to plug directly into a wall socket. They are usually connected via a separate cooker circuit which is suitable only for appliances using up to 20 amps.
You can test the ring circuit at your home by checking the fuse box, or by speaking to an electrician in your area. Ask them if the sockets are on the same ring, or if they are distinct. They should also be able to inform you if there's a dedicated circuit to power your oven.

What is the maximum current draw of a cooker switch?
There is lots of confusion regarding what the maximum current draw of a cooker switch actually is. The fact is, most cookers aren't made to connect to a standard socket, but rather are hard wired and connected to a specific oven ring circuit. It is because they often consume more than 20 amps when both the electric and gas hob oven are being used.
There aren't any dual fuel range cookers that are able to be fitted in standard sockets, because this could create an enormous fire risk and infringe electrical regulations. A licensed electrician must always install new electrical wiring in the kitchen to the cooker. They will also ensure that the load of the oven and the hob does not exceed the circuit's supply capacity.
Dual fuel range cookers combine the responsiveness of a gas stove with the precision and precision of an electric oven. This is why they're popular among cooks and chefs alike. If you want to try various cooking techniques like searing and charring, a dual fuel range cooker is the best option.
