Favorable results were reported in 44% of studies while 47% of studies reported poor outcomes and discouraged use of xenograft bone products. In our own clinical series, xenograft failed to integrate with host bone in 58% of cases and persistent pain was reported in 83% of cases. CONCLUSIONS This is the first systematic review of clinical results reported after bone xenotransplantation for orthopaedic surgery applications. Current literature does not support the use of xenograft bone products and our institution's results are consistent with this conclusion. Our laboratory has reported promising pre-clinical results with a xenograft product derived from porcine cancellous bone, but additional testing is required before considering clinical translation. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.A series of donor/acceptor chromophores 1d-3d containing two types of photoresponsive motifs, namely an electron-deficient BF2-chelated ketone fused with an electron-rich thiophene have been synthesized and their photochromic performance are investigated. The results reveal that simple variation of R substituents on the diaryl moiety allows one to control the intramolecular photocyclization mechanism with high photochemical selectivity, e.g., under ambient light, methyl-substituted 1d and 2d undergo 6π photocyclization, whereas ethyl-substituted 3d exclusively undergoes Norrish-Yang photocyclization. Single-crystal X-ray analysis of Norrish-Yang cyclization products reveals the formation of four pairs of conformational enantiomers differing in the dihedral angle between benzothiophene and the BF2 core. The UV-vis absorption spectra of 1d-3d cover a broad visible light region (380-572 nm), while theoretical calculations reveal that absorption in this region is dominated by the charge transfer (CT) transition from the thiophene-centered HOMO to the LUMO of the electron-deficient π-conjugated BF2-chelated unit. The spatial separation of the HOMO and LUMO of these dyes promotes triplet state generation and self-photosensitizes intramolecular photocyclization in the visible light region. Three-dimensional time-resolved and steady-state emission spectra of 3d show that the Norrish-Yang photocyclization takes place within milliseconds with excellent conversion efficiency (96%). © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.PURPOSE Delta-like protein 3 (DLL3) is being developed as a predictive biomarker for DLL3-targeting antibody-drug conjugate and other therapies. Given the neuroendocrine features of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), we sought to evaluate DLL3 expression and its role in MCC. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded MCC cases were consecutively selected. Immunohistochemistry was performed for DLL3 (SC16.65 antibody) and polyomavirus large T-antigen (sc-136172 antibody). Slides were read out for percentage of positive tumor cells. Cox proportional hazards model was applied to assess the association between DLL3 expression and overall survival (OS). A patient with a DLL3-expressing MCC was treated with rovalpituzumab tesirine (Rova-T) in the "other tumor" cohort of NCT02709889 and assessed for response. Linsitinib RESULTS The median H-score of DLL3 expression of 65 patients included was 60 (interquartile range, 30-100). Fifty-eight cases (89%) had ≥1% tumor cells positive for DLL3 expression with any intensity, orexpression is very common in MCC by immunohistochemistry and significantly associated with Merkel cell polyomavirus expression. Despite the lack of prognostic significance in this cohort, DLL3 expression may have predictive relevance for DLL3-targeting therapies in MCC. The high levels of DLL3 expression in a subset of MCC may potentially be used to select patients to receive DLL3-targeting therapies. © AlphaMed Press 2020.Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) and cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) are two distinct conditions that have rarely been reported in association. We report a child with CM and disseminated JXG, who showed a significant decrease in serum tryptase levels and regression of JXG lesions over time. Due to the paucity of reports, a true association between these two conditions has not been validated, although a potential induction of histiocytic lesions by mast cell degranulation has been proposed. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC.BACKGROUND Placenta praevia is characterised by an inferior placental margin that overlies or falls within 20 mm of the endocervical os. It remains a common cause of antepartum haemorrhage and is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. AIMS We aimed to determine the association between antepartum and postpartum haemorrhage and adverse outcomes in cases of placenta praevia. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study population included women diagnosed with placenta praevia, who delivered between 1 April 2007 and 30 April 2017. The endpoints of interest included blood transfusion, emergency caesarean section, peripartum hysterectomy and admission to intensive care. RESULTS There were 513 cases of placenta praevia, of which 67.3% delivered at term. Antepartum haemorrhage was associated with an increased risk of blood transfusion (relative risk (RR) 3.29; 95% CI 2.04-5.32), emergency caesarean section (RR 1.38; 95% CI 1.18-1.62) and preterm delivery, after 32 weeks gestation (RR 4.21; 95% CI 2.77-6.38). Postpartum haemorrhage more than doubled the risk of blood transfusion (RR 9.08 95% CI 5-16.44) and admission to the intensive care unit (RR 10.44; 95% CI 2.34-46.59), as well as increased the risk of peripartum hysterectomy (1.4%). We also described the management of 12 cases of placenta praevia (2.3% of the study population) delivered vaginally. CONCLUSIONS Antepartum and postpartum haemorrhage in cases of placenta praevia are predictors of several adverse outcomes. However, the high rate of term deliveries reaffirms the current practice of expectant management. © 2020 The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.The increasing age of populations throughout the world means that healthcare services are faced with new challenges, not least regarding the provision of food during hospital stay. There is a lack of knowledge of how hospital mealtimes are experienced by older patients, and so the aim of this article was to review current knowledge regarding mealtimes in hospitals from the perspectives of older patients. A literature search was performed using seven databases PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Sociological Abstracts, SweMed+, ASSIA and CINAHL with no limits regarding publication date. The inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed articles in English or Swedish that used qualitative methods to examine older patients' (>65 years) mealtime experiences. The Five Aspect Meal Model (FAMM) served as a framework for understanding the complexity behind a mealtime experience. Qualitative content analysis was used as a guide when analysing the material. The search produced 415 studies, 14 of which were included in the review. The findings generated three main themes for understanding how older patients experience mealtimes while in hospital (1) the food and the food service, (2) mealtime assistance and commensality during mealtimes and (3) the importance of retaining one's independence.
