Dual Fuel Range Cooker With 13amp Plug
Are you a home cook who appreciates the convenience of gas cooktops but needs an oven to bake in? Find a dual-fuel range cooker that gives you the best of both worlds.
Gas cooktops are preferred by many home chefs who have expertise in the kitchen because of their superior temperature control. They also allow the use of advanced cooking techniques such as grilling. These powerful stoves are expensive particularly if they require an additional gas connection and an electrician to install them.
What is a 13amp outlet?
If you own a dual fuel range cooker (also known as a gas and electric oven), then you'll need an appropriately rated 13 amp plug. The plug should be wired by a qualified electrician into the cooker ring.
This assures that the current that flows through the plug is secure and not too high which could result in an electrical fire danger. The current is controlled by a fuse inside the plug. The fuse explodes as soon as the current passes through it over its capacity, which safeguards the appliance from over-charge of electricity.
The fuse is rated at 13 amps, which is shown on top of the plug. This indicates the maximum amount of current that the plug could carry without damaging the appliance or heating the socket. When replacing fuses, it's important to use the same amp rating as the original. You run the risk of overheating a socket when you replace a fuse that has an unrelated rating.
A 13 amp fuse is likely to be a ceramic type, which is very robust and able to withstand the high temperatures produced by the range cooker. Ceramic elements are also resistant to fire and thus a better choice over other types.
There are several ways to install an 13 amp plug. The plug can be connected to a live socket with screws or a plastic jaw cord clamp. The clamp must be tightened after the plug has been tightly pushed into place.
Before connecting the wires you may need to remove the cardboard wiring diagram that is placed over the pins of some plugs. It is vital that the wires be cut to the correct length as leaving them too long can cause them to be crushed when the plug cover is replaced. The earth wire should be the longest to connect it prior to the neutral and line pins.
How do I install an outlet with 13amps?
The vast majority of dual cookers that use fuel in the UK are equipped with an amp rating of 13 amps. This is important because ovens can draw significant current, and standard plug sockets only have a 10 amp rating.
In general new appliances must be fitted with a plug at the point of sale. This is in order to be in compliance with the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety Regulations) 1994. However, cheap dual fuel range cookers may not have an outlet and that is where the problem arises.
The first thing to do when connecting a cooktop to an existing plug socket is to ensure that the fuse rating in the fuse box is similar to that of the plug. This is crucial as an incorrectly sized fuse could be dangerous.
It is also recommended to ensure that the fuse is installed in the cartridge and there isn't any movement within it. Next up is to prepare the flex to be used. Remove the sheathing to reveal the three conductors insulated. Use a utility blade to cut the sheathing beyond the cord grip at the point of entry into the plug. This won't be able to penetrate the insulated conductors. The nick should be wide enough to allow for the sheathing and cable to separate as the sheathing is pulled back. Cut off the excess sheathing, leaving a little more than 40mm over the flex.
The flex is positioned over the plug and the earth terminal is placed at the top and live and neutral terminals at the bottom. The sheathing of each pin is removed using the colored conductors as a reference. The internal cable is then secured to the terminal using the cord grip. If the plug is equipped with a clamp for cords that is screw-type, loosen it and then pull the insulation back to expose the copper wires. Connect each insulated wire to the correct terminal using the plug's channel. Start with the earth conductor and then the neutral and finally the live.
What is the maximum draw of a 13 amp plug?
The maximum current draw for a 13amp plug at 3kw at 230 volts is. This is a large amount of power, however the standard fuse on the UK plugtop won't fail until the cable is at a risky temperature. It is important to be aware of the power you're using in your kitchen, since an unfit plug or socket can cause an accident.
The fuse inside the plugtops are made of ceramic, around 25mm long and 240V mains rated. They will be marked with a BS kitemark or similar mark on the side and contain sand. Alternatives to glass or plastic are available, but should not be used in conjunction with a live plug.
The majority of dual fuel range cookers in the UK require a hard-wired connection and will not plug directly into an outlet on the wall. They are usually connected to a dedicated cooker ring circuit which is only suitable for appliances that consume up to 20 amps.
Examine the ring circuit in your home with the fuse box, or contact a local electrician. Ask them if the sockets are connected to the same ring, or if they are distinct. They should also be able tell you if there is a separate circuit to power your oven.

What is the maximum current draw of the cooker switch?
There is lots of confusion regarding what the maximum current draw of a cooker's switch is. The reality is that the majority of cookers are not designed to connect to the standard socket, but instead are hard wired and fed into a dedicated oven ring circuit. This is because they typically consume more than 20 amps when the electric hob and gas oven are used.
You will not find dual fuel range cookers that are able to be fitted in a standard socket, because this could create an extremely high risk of fire and violate electrical regulations. A licensed electrician should install new electrical circuits in the kitchen to an oven. They will also make sure that the total load of the oven and hob does not exceed the circuit's power supply capacity.
The advantages of a dual fuel cooker are the responsive cooking power of a gas stove with the precision of an electric oven. This is the reason they are highly sought-after by cooks and chefs alike. If you want to try different cooking techniques such as searing and charring, a dual fuel range cooker is the perfect choice.
When buying a new cooktop, you need to consider several factors such as size, function and price. It is also necessary to have gas connections in your home to allow the appliance. If you're not sure, it is best to book an appointment with a Gas Safe engineer to inspect your home prior to installation.
The Currys range of dual fuel range cookers offers options to fit a variety of budgets, ranging from low-cost models from Indesit and Zanussi to our exclusive Essentials collection. If you are looking for something more advanced, we stock a variety of premium JennAir models that feature a number innovative features.
When you purchase a new dual fuel range cooker, it is essential to read the owner's manual for specific details on the gas and electrical requirements. You will need a gas connection in your home. A plumber could be required to set it up for you. You may also need a cooker-ring circuit that is installed by a qualified electrical engineer.
