How to Keep a Robot Vacuum Clean
Robot vacuums can help keep your floors clean. Depending on the model, they may also sweep, mop and even vacuum staircases.
Look for models that have advanced features, such as remote access and app control. Apps can be used to plan cleaning sessions and keep track of the progress. Some can even pause, recharge and resume where they left off.
1. Battery Life
With self-driving cars drones that fly through the skies and robot vacuums that swiftly move around furniture, it's safe to say that the future of cleaning is here. But as with automated vacuum needs some care to ensure it's running efficiently.
The cycle of charge and discharge for the battery is the most crucial factor in the longevity of your robot. Keep the dust bin filled and empty, examining for hairs that have become tangled frequently and keeping the brushes from getting jammed will all help your robot run more effectively.
Another aspect is the environment in which your robot is stored because extreme heat and cold can affect the battery's performance. You can prolong the life of your battery by ensuring it's charged to 50% before storage, keeping it in an environment that is cool and taking it off of sources of power when not in use. In addition, the majority of smart devices have periodic firmware updates that improve performance, such as battery optimization, so make sure to check your app for any updates that are available.
A robot vacuum is an excellent alternative for those with a lot of hard flooring. It can take away dirt and debris quickly and efficiently leaving your floors sparkling. However, if you're looking to do more than just a quick cleanup, you'll want to consider a model that offers superior navigation and obstacles-avoiding capabilities.
The Ecovacs T20 robot is our top-rated robot. It is a combination of advanced navigation, powerful suction, and a variety of mopping features to provide an extensive, thorough cleaning of your hard flooring. It utilizes LiDAR sensors and cameras to create detailed maps of your home, which assists it in staying on the right path and avoid getting stuck on furniture legs or power cords. It can also identify items like clutter and shoes and clean around them automatically. And it's self-emptying, meaning you won't have to return the vacuum to its base station to empty its bin every cleaning session.
2. Dust Bin
Robots are ideal for quick midweek clean-ups however they don't have the suction power to replace the power of a plug-in vacuum cleaner when it comes to deep cleaning. Even the top robotic vacuums are prone to becoming entangled in cords and toys. They also can miss dirt piles near baseboards and struggle to get rid of crumbs from under furniture. And, their onboard dustbins are so full that they need to return to their charging docks to empty themselves, which can take as long as half an hour for some models.
As such, it's important to select a vacuum that has a big dust bin that can be emptied into its dock and not return to finish the job. You'll want to decide whether you prefer a bagged model or a model that is bagless. If you decide to go with the bagless version, you'll need to know how much dust it can hold before you can empty it.
In our tests we apply 100 grams of sand onto the carpet in a medium pile and use a robot vacuum to sweep it across the carpet. Weighing the amount of sand in the vacuum's dust bin onboard allows us to measure the amount of dirt that has been accumulated. A high amount means that the bin onboard could be filled faster and cause your robot to stop cleaning.
It's a good idea to know that many robot vacuums have large dust bins that can be easily empty. You can also set up them to empty their bases at least two times a day. Keep a container filled with compressed air on hand to blow away any hairs that are tangled up in the rotating brush and to clean any filters in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
3. Wi-Fi Connectivity
The top robot vacuums have a variety options for connecting to your home's WiFi. This lets the robot download and install updates for its software, and allows you to monitor your bot via an app or through voice-activated commands. While not essential, this feature offers convenience and a variety of customization options that will enhance the overall experience of robot vacuuming.
To ensure they're operating at their best the majority of models require a certain amount of maintenance. For example emptying the dustbin and cleaning the brushroll. Monitoring consumable parts and a regular schedule for cleaning and detachment will extend their life span as well. Vacuum expert Emily Rairdin at University Vacuum & Sewing says three to five years is the typical lifespan of a robot vacuum. However, this can vary significantly depending on how often you use it, and whether you take care of it properly.
A robot vacuum has to be able navigate obstacles and map your floor to be able to perform. Advanced navigation systems usually include sensors for cliffs that alert the robot to steep drops, as well as laser and optical sensors that help it "see" a room's layout. Some robots come with a mopping function that can be used to keep floors between deep cleanings by using a vacuum.
The most effective 2-in-1 vacuums also mop. This means that you won't have to switch between an automatic vacuum and an manual one. One example is the iRobot Roomba 690, which is a powerful and efficient robot vacuum that can also clean surfaces with its water tank and wash the mop pad in a way that is automatic. Its mapping and obstacle avoidance abilities were so effective that it won the CR's Best Robot vacuum Award, as well an AVTech Editors Choice Award.
4. Cleaning Patterns
The best robot vacuums that we tested had impressive pick-up scores on hard floors as well as carpets with low pile. They remove dust, dirt and pet hair. They also get rid of debris and crumbs from the baseboards and at the edges of rooms. However, they are unable to remove deep-down dirt or tangles in plush shag carpet fibers as well as canister or upright vacuums. They are also unable to pick up spilled liquids and food particles, or screws made of heavy metal and they could be unable to reach certain areas of the house (including under furniture).
Many models have clever features that make them more user-friendly. They usually have an app which allows you to schedule cleaning sessions and control the robot remotely. They can be integrated with your smart home system to allow voice commands via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Certain models come with different modes that allow you to choose between mopping and sweeping, or vacuuming. They can return to their docks for a recharge and resume cleaning where they left off.
The technology to avoid obstacles has improved over the years, but it is still essential to get rid of cords, toys and any pet debris prior to running the robot. Before you map out the room, you'll need to cover all ceiling-to-floor mirrors with cardboard. The lasers used by certain models could bounce off reflective surfaces, causing the robot to bump against the wall or floor.
More premium models have advanced mapping capabilities, some using lidar to create an 3D map of your surroundings. This helps the robot to recognize obstacles and devise an efficient path around them. Some also allow you to set no-go zones, so the robot is able to avoid certain areas, like your pet's food bowls or a rug that is expensive.
5. App Control
You can set up an agenda for cleaning and control the robots with an app. This lets you take care of your home while you're working or away on vacation. Certain robots also automatically empty their trash into a large bin at the base. This helps reduce dust release and is a wonderful feature for those suffering from allergies.
Some robots, such as the more expensive Roborock S8 Pro Ultra, can detect objects on the floor and employ a camera to instruct them to avoid obstacles such as power cords, furniture legs or pet toys. This is an impressive capability, and it's even available in cheaper models. It's crucial to clean the dustbin of your robot and look for hairs that have become tangled when they begin to accumulate.
A high-end model can also store multiple floor plans, which are useful if you live on more than one level and some models can even create 3D models of your home. You can choose specific rooms, and set up digital "keep-out" zones to ensure your robot only cleans the areas you want.
Robots are great for midweek cleaning, but they can't replace a plug-in vacuum cleaner, especially when it concerns rugs. They are better at removing dirt that's embedded in carpet than plain floors, however they're not able to spot piles of debris near baseboards and thresholds, and cords and socks that have become tangled. To make the most of your robot, look for a model with spots and zone cleaning modes to target particular areas and prevent unnecessary cleaning. You can also find models that can charge and resume where they left off. This is ideal for houses with large spaces.
