Pragmatism places emphasis on experience and context. It may lack an explicit set of fundamental principles or an encapsulated ethical framework. This could result in an absence of idealistic ambitions and transformative change.

These classical pragmatists focused on theorizing inquiry about meaning, meaning and the nature of truth. Their influence was felt by several influential American thinkers like John Dewey (1859-1952), who applied their theories to education and other aspects of social improvement, and Jane Addams (1860-1935) who founded social work.

More recently a new generation of philosophers has given pragmatism a wider platform for discussion. The neopragmatists have a different understanding of what it takes for an idea to be true. The neo-pragmatists instead insist on the notion of 'ideal warranted assertion,' which says that an idea is true if a claim about it can be justified in a certain way to a specific group of people.

There are however some issues with this perspective. It is often criticized as being used to support illogical and silly concepts. An example of this is the gremlin hypothesis that is a truly useful concept, and it is effective in practice, but it is completely unsubstantiated and likely to be nonsense. The neo-pragmatists from recent times have attempted to put pragmatism into a broader Western philosophical context, and have traced the affinities of Peirce's theories with Kant and other idealists from the 19th century, as well as with the emerging science of evolutionary theory. They also have sought to understand the significance of truth in a traditional epistemology of a posteriori, and to develop a metaphilosophy that is pragmatic and includes a view of language, meaning and the nature of knowledge.

Nevertheless, pragmatism has continued to develop, and the epistemology of a posteriori that it developed is still considered an important distinction from traditional approaches. The pragmatic theory has been criticised for a long time however, in recent years it has attracted more attention. Some of these include the idea that pragmatism fails when applied to moral issues, and that its claim "what works" is nothing more than a realism with an unpolished appearance.

Methods

While these philosophers are not classical pragmatists but they do have a lot in common with the philosophy of pragmatism, and draw upon the work of Peirce, James and Wittgenstein in their writings.
