ADHD Treatments For Adults

Many of the same methods that are effective for children with ADHD can also be used to treat adults. These treatments include counseling, medication (psychotherapy), and life skills training. These treatments can include a combination.

Stimulant Medicines

These medications work by increasing the availability of certain brain chemicals that aid in controlling attention and self-regulation. These include the methylphenidate (marketed as Ritalin, Concerta) and stimulants belonging to the amphetamine group, such as lisdexamphetamine (marketed as Adderall, Vyvanse).

Stimulant Medicines

Stimulants are drugs that speed up the body's system and may result in greater mental alertness and more physical activity. These include legal substances like caffeine (added to coffee and tea) and nicotine, as well as prescription drugs used to treat attention deficit disorder (ADD) as well as narcolepsy and hyperactivity. In large doses, stimulants can cause over-stimulation and lead to anxiety heart palpitations, high blood pressure, aggression and paranoia. For some, long-term use of stimulants may damage the the brain's dopamine system, which can decrease pleasure-seeking feelings. Examples include lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse) or methylphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin).

Non-stimulant Medications


Around 15%-30% of children don't respond to stimulant medications and it's possible that this is true for adults too. Non-stimulant medications are slower to begin working, and can sometimes take a few weeks before you feel the effects. However, they don't have the same risk of side effects as stimulants, and could be a better option for those who are unable to tolerate them or are worried about addiction.
