Globally distributed, soil associated Metarhizium species used in insect biological control are evidently facultatively sexual and obligately outcrossing, yet sexual morphs have not been observed for most species and corroboration that they recombine in nature remains limited. Community-wide genetic diversity of Metarhizium species among 480 soil isolates from 14 states of western USA was investigated to assess the contributions of clonality and recombination in determining each species' population structure. Seven species, varying greater than 100-fold in relative abundance, were identified by phylogenetic analysis of 5' EF1-α (5TEF), including M. robertsii (n = 372), M. guizhouense (n = 37), M. brunneum (n = 37), M. lepidiotae (n = 14), M. pemphigi (n = 11), M. anisopliae (n = 7) and M. pingshaense (n = 2). Analyses of composite multilocus genotypes integrating 5TEF sequences, multilocus microsatellites and mating type idiomorphs conducted on a subset of 239 isolates revealed that all species populations dimber of genetic individuals observed throughout western North American Metarhizium species may signify that these represent peripheral populations descended from limited numbers of founders among which there has been little recombination relative to the extent of clone expansion and within-clone genetic divergence.
Having a service dog can help to increase independence and well-being among people with a disability or a chronic health condition. Although there has been an increasing use of service dogs among children and youth their impact has not yet been synthesized.

The purpose of this article was to conduct a systematic review assessing the impact of service dogs on children, youth and their families.

Systematic searches of seven international databases from 1985 to 2020 led to 29 studies meeting our inclusion criteria. see more Using a narrative synthesis review approach we analyzed these studies regarding their sample characteristics, methods, results and quality of evidence.

There were 29 studies in our review that included 1121 children and youth (or parents representing them) that spanned across six countries over a 32-year period. Although the outcomes of the impact of service dogs varied across the studies, 23/29 of them reported an improvement in at least one of the following physical health (i.e., diabetes management, seizure management, mobility), psychological health (i.e., quality of life, safety, behavior, stress, anxiety, self-confidence and independence), social well-being (i.e., social interactions, school and work) and dog-owner-bond. Children, youth and their parents also described several challenges in owning a service dog.

Our findings highlight that service dogs have potential to provide many benefits for children, youth and their families. Further research, including more rigorously designed studies, is needed to fully understand their impact.

To evaluate the feasibility of recruiting preterm infants to a randomized controlled trial of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) treatment based on a PDA severity score (PDAsc) and to characterize challenges in obtaining consent, compliance with the protocol, and PDA closure rates.

This single-center, randomized control pilot study of 60 infants <29weeks of gestation with a high PDAsc (≥5.0) at 36-48hours of age receiving either ibuprofen or placebo intravenously. The study protocol did not allow for additional PDA therapy within the first 2weeks. We reported the rate of consent, open label treatment, and PDA closure rates. The primary outcome was chronic lung disease or death.

We approached 83 families for enrollment with 73 (88%) providing consent; 13 infants had a PDAsc of <5; of the remaining infants, 30 were assigned ibuprofen and 30 received placebo. Eight infants received open label treatment in the first 2weeks (12%). The overall PDA closure rate after treatment was 57% in the intervention group and 17% in the control group (P<.01). There was no difference in the primary clinical outcome (OR, 0.8; 95% CI, 0.3-2.1).

Using a PDAsc for infant recruitment to a PDA treatment randomized controlled trial is feasible. There is a high rate of consent and relatively low rate of open-label PDA treatment. The overall PDA closure rate in the intervention arm was low placing the emphasis on devising more effective PDA closure strategies in future randomized controlled trials.

Analysis of the effectiveness of early Parental Coaching in the Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Randomized, controlled and blinded clinical trial to analyze parent-child interaction videos.

The sample consisted of 18 children being followed up at the Autism Outpatient Clinic of a Neuropediatric Center in southern Brazil diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, between 29 and 42 months of age, randomly allocated to two groups the Study Group (SG; n=9), which received Parental Coaching performed by a professional certified by the ESDM (Early Start Denver Model); and the Control Group (CG; n=9), which was in a routine follow-up, without treatment and training of parents by a trained professional. The parents of the SG were willing to attend weekly meetings and to apply the instructional techniques at home with their children. It took 12 weeks and an average of 2h per meeting.

The learning rate for comprehensive development skills in the ESDM checklist, such as receptive communication, expressive communication, social capacity, imitation, cognition, games, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, behavior, and personal independence was significantly higher in the SG, as well as the strategies and the quality of interaction between parents and children. Thus, Parental Coaching presents as a possibility of early intervention in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
