Few bariatric surgery programs exist at safety net hospitals which often serve patients of diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. A bariatric surgery program was developed at a large urban safety net medical center serving a primarily Hispanic population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate safety, feasibility, and first-year outcomes to pave the way for other safety net bariatric programs.

The bariatric surgery program was started at a safety net hospital located in a neighborhood with over twice the national poverty rate. A retrospective review was performed for patient demographics, comorbidities, preoperative diet and exercise habits, perioperative outcomes, and 1-year outcomes including percent total weight lost (%TWL) and comorbidity reduction.

A total of 153 patients underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy from May 2017 through December 2019. The average preoperative BMI was 47.9kg/m
, and 54% of patients had diabetes. The 1-year follow-up rate was 94%. There were no mortalities and low complication rates. The average 1-year %TWL was 22.8%. Hypertension and diabetes medications decreased in 52% and 55% of patients, respectively. The proportion of diabetic patients with postoperative HbA1c <6.0% was 49%.

Irisin is generated from a membrane-bound precursor protein fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 (FNDC5). Aside from being highly expressed in muscle, FNDC5 is highly expressed in the brain. The cleaved form of FNDC5 was found in the cerebrospinal fluid as well as in various regions of the brain. Numerous studies suggest that irisin plays a key role in brain metabolism and inflammation regulation. Both the metabolism and inflammation govern stroke outcome, and in a published study, we demonstrated that LFV therapy following middle cerebral artery occlusion significantly reduced innate immune response, improved motor function and infarct volume in reproductively senescent female rats. Within the Acari, the Prostigmata represent a diverse suborder of the order Trombidiformes with about 20 000 species, including parasitic forms on both vertebrates and invertebrates. Within the Prostigmata, the genus Locustacarus (Heterostigmata Podapolipidae) is particularly known as an intratracheal parasite of bumblebees and grasshoppers. In a survey on prostigmatic mites (Acari Trombidiformes Prostigmata) associated with insects in the eastern parts of Iran, one new species of the endoparasitic Locustacarus was collected associated to the grasshopper Aiolopus thalassinus (Fabricius) (Orthoptera Acrididae). This new species, Locustacarus aiolopi Rahmatzaei & Hajiqanbar n. sp., is described here and compared morphologically with other species of the genus. This new species represents the first record of a grasshopper-associated Locustacarus species in the Palearctic. We further provide a comprehensive review of the global distribution of this genus as well as its host range.Visual object recognition in humans and nonhuman primates is achieved by the ventral visual pathway (ventral occipital-temporal cortex, VOTC), which shows a well-documented object domain structure. An on-going question is what type of information is processed in the higher-order VOTC that underlies such observations, with recent evidence suggesting effects of certain visual features. Combining computational vision models, fMRI experiment using a parametric-modulation approach, and natural image statistics of common objects, we depicted the neural distribution of a comprehensive set of visual features in the VOTC, identifying voxel sensitivities with specific feature sets across geometry/shape, Fourier power, and color. The visual feature combination pattern in the VOTC is significantly explained by their relationships to different types of response-action computation (fight-or-flight, navigation, and manipulation), as derived from behavioral ratings and natural image statistics. These results offer a comprehensive visual feature map in the VOTC and a plausible theoretical explanation as a mapping onto different types of downstream response-action systems.
